  • Thanks ORB. I likes running in the woods. Must have some Hobbit in me.
  • Oh dear goodness. Have started training for this in earnest now.

Actually I'd forgotten how relentless the hills are but ORB is correct, there are bits that are flat.  A couple of the hills are also not THAT bad if you can manage a nice steady plod.  A bit like second gear in your car plod.

The hardest part I think will be Burford Slope to the finish (the long green one) with slippery chalk at the top and a steep descent we've seen many people come a cropper with cramp on the last stretch so remember to practice the downs as well as the ups.

  • I always get overtaken at the end - I am just not brave enough
  • Just looked up the amount of steps in the Canary Wharf tower - 4388 - Kinda puts it in perspective doesn't it!

So, 50 floors to Canary Wharf which means The Picnic is equivalent to just over FOUR times up, and down. Oh christ, now I really know what I've signed up for.

Umm, help? I'm so glad I didn't look at what I was entering before I did, otherwise I may not have done image

Keep putting one foot in front of t'other. Fall over. Get up. Start again.

If reality matched intention I'd know I was dreaming
  • Just been asked whether I'd be interested in doing the London to Brighton cycle ride next year - is it barking mad to be thinking of doing it bearing in mind it's the day after the Picnic?

Or is the fact that I'm doing the Picnic (again) a sign that I'm barking mad anyway?

  • Calling Dr Rob, calling Dr Rob, do you read me, over?

The 2009 instructions on the website give the cut-off as 3 hours at halfway and 5 hours for the three-quarters point. For 2011 it says just 2:45 for halfway. I'm assuming that is correct for the next event, yes?

My MM times in the past two years were 2:30-ish and 2:40-ish so a 2:45 cutoff probably rules me out. But 3 hrs says I might squeak it. If I HTFU quite a bit.

  • Muttley - I don't think that sounds right as people were still coming in around 7hrs last time.

Edit - Sorry you're right thats what it says , 2:45 is a v tight cut off if it is enforced image

  • afternoon all,

Joe, Muttley - Not sure where you're looking. The below is copied from the website 2 minutes ago and is the same as before.

For The Picnic, there is a cut-off of 3 hours to reach the half way point (where you can gain the medal for the Midsummer Munro, at least), and 5 hours for the three-quarters point. Note: all runners will be escorted from the course after 7 hours.

If reality matched intention I'd know I was dreaming
  • It says 2:45 cutoff in the spiel on the RW event page (as in the link at top of page). The 3hr and 5hr cutoff on the home page refers to the 2009 event. Unless I'm missing something and being a bit thick (has been known ...)
  • Yep, my bad. Wishful thinking on my part! Only remembered what I saw on the website, not the speil on here.

    Well, I wanted a challange......image

If reality matched intention I'd know I was dreaming
  • Whoops, sorry for the confusion. It will be a 3 hour cut-off for completion of the half and 5 hours for the 3/4... (7 hours final cut-off) but it will be strictly enforced.

I've taken a policy of reducing the cut-off on the Greensand Marathon to 70 minutes for the first quarter, but the Picnic is in a different league - a first half of 3 hours is still quite an accomplishment (especially given that you then have to turn around and do it all again).
  • Thank you for that, Sir. I see the field limit is 100 with 50 entrants last time round so I figure I have some time to ponder this one.
  • Ahem.. there are currently around 80 entrants (but I won't turn anyone away, if they are nutty enough to want to enter).
  • Chimney - 4388 steps in Canary Wharf tower? Are you sure? The adjoining building with Citi written on the top has 1012 from B4 to the 45th. I counted them so I might be a few out but not a few thousand! That makes the Picnic even harder of course.
  • Dr Rob,

I dont have a number to reach you and wanted to let you know my sad news that I am unable to attempt my record this year because of a number of issues.  Many thanks for you offer earlier in the year that really was good of you.

I'm hoping still to get to run the event though.

    Many thanks

    Rusty

  • Shame... but the hills will still be there for next time you want to run them! Welcome along to The Picnic (or should it be called 'The Crippler'?)
  • 123 places gone (where do all these nutters come from??!!) and only 77 left.
  • Umm, this is the week before the Classic Qtr 44miler at Lands End i am doing for a 2nd time (bloody hilly, circa 8500ft ascent), i know my recovery is good but not sure i will be able to do the Picnic and have totally recovered in time, and The Picand needs to be shown the respect it deserves. I really, really want to do the Picnic........................Will have to ponder, or run the Classic Qtr with mashed quads

  • Mr I - I'm in for the Picnic (second time for me so I haven't got the excuse of not knowing what it's like!) and I'm planning on doing London to Brighton Bike Ride the following day. Go on, you know you really want to do them both!

sounds good event that day I am doing Torbay half
  • I was thinking of leaving entry for a while until I'd done more training but it's a good job I didn't as I probably wouldn't have got in.

Question for Dr. Robert, and I know I've asked this on the entry form, but my only experience of this event is 6 years ago when I had to pull out of the Picnic when I realised what was involved and just ran the Munro instead-What're the directions like these days? When I did some actual terrain practice I kept getting lost and on the race day it wasn't much better as I was in constant fear of losing sight of the other runners and getting completely befuddled.
  • Slant...you won't get lost full stop. Just worry about the rest of it.
  • ORB,I didn't say I wasn't worried about the rest of it !!!
  • Back for another dose of madness - I ran it in 2009 and did an unofficial Picnic last year, starting at 1:30 and running back down the long slope at 3:57pm to pick up my MM number and go round again! Sadly my combined time was a pathetic 5h 50m 06s, and the first lap was rather lonely (apart from the unsuspecting punters out for a walk and the refreshment stops at the top and bottom of the steps who found themselves doling out drinks before the official race had even started!)

I'm out for a sub-5hr time this time round, but somone else can try and beat my unofficial course record (set last year as it was a new course!!!!!!)

  • Dr Bob,
How the entries looking? Will the Picnic be full before the end of Feb? Is it full already? Just wondered how much time I have if any to get my entry in.
    Thanks.
  • Right, I'm in.....

    I think.

Just a finish will make me very happy.

  • I think i need serious help!!!

I have only gone and entered this today!

    I am actually worried now

  • 137 places gone in the Picnic...63 left.

The signage is much better... you won't get lost. Promise.

L2B the next day? 8500ft marathon? There's a lot of nutters around.

From you, I'm taking that as a compliment!
