oooh glow in the dark Nick image

    How is the pain now?

  • Options
    Nick LNick L ✭✭✭

No pain at all - hasnt been any pain for a while. Bit tender if I poke some of the bones.....

Yes i had to drink a lot to flush the tracer through my body......not sure if my pee was glowing though.

Radiologist said that there 'was something there' - exactly what I dont know have to wait for the report. They alos took a couple of xrays of my leg too. Been thoroughly examined.

good news on the no pain front.  If it hurts when you prod it then stop prodding it.  Simples image

hmm 'something there' what does that mean?

When does the report come through?

  • Options
    Nick LNick L ✭✭✭

few days i suspectfor the report.

I THINK the pain is a hanger on from the RSD, as it is not in the area of concern. I only prod it every few days, to see whether there has been any change.

I have a SF in the middle of my tibia.

Bone scan shows it up quite clearly apparently. Pleased I went through all of this, as the break is nowhere near where I was getting the pain - an oddiity commented upon by consultant.

Oh no, is it nearly healed?  You've been off your feet for a while now.

    ....nope....8 weeks he suggested.

Blimey, that is a while, that on top of the rest you have already done.

    Hi Nick,

My daughter suffered from this some years ago, and we still don't know what caused it. I'm pleased to hear you are still bearing weight on that leg - DON'T STOP! She was told to go on crutches for 2 weeks and lost all her muscle on that leg.

From what I understand it's a neural reaction which makes the body feel pain and act injured, although there's nothing wrong - a sort of over-active pain reflex. In her case the affected foot was very cold because the nervous system closed down circulation to that area, so she had to keep it warm. She ended up having intensive physio involving balance exercises to re-train the leg to ignore the 'injury' and rebuild the muscles. She also had ultra-sound treatment on the affected area, which seemed to be very efffective in in-knotting the ligaments and making them behave normally.

You can get this treatment on the NHS, but I had to bully and play the Child card (she was 13) to get it, so you may find it quicker and easier to go to a clinic specialising in sports injuries. Hope this helps!

thespare - I am walking etc as normal....and it is 'better' (RSD) but it is not nice at all - I can imagine how scary it must be for a child.

I lost a fair bit of muscle mass, but the main thing I have to deal with now is the SF. I dont want to go non-weight bearing again, as I suspect that this will occur.

I have some private cover (hence the MRI/bone scans in the space of 2 weeks) so am going ot investigate these options.

I have just been faxed the report it says:

"focus of uptake in the mid right tibia area. Plain film does not show obvious change, but the features would be in keeping with an early stress fracture".

.....also mild degeneration of patellofemoral joints and lef proximal tibiofibular joints.

  • Options

I guess as it is an early stress fracture then there is no need to non weight bear, just avoid lots of walking and any running?

mild degeneration? is that normal age related?  they do like to scare us dont they?

...im a bit miffed that it is 'an early SF' as I have been 'resting' for 4 weeks already.

I am wondering whether I have been doing too much. I havent used crutches now for 2 weeks, but have been cycling and whatnot....although been trying to take things steady and not put too much load through my bad leg. However, what I consider to be 'not too much' might be 'too much', as it is all so subjective.

As for the mild degeneration - yes, that was somehting of a concern given that I am 34.

Do your joints ache or hurt?  if not then I wouldn't worry about it too much.  I probably show signs of wear if you stick me in an MRI but I dont have any aches or pains therefore I'm not worried.

Good luck with the SF, maybe knock the cycling on the head for a bit

Nick, many x-rays show some degree of degeneration as an incidental finding. The degree of damage often does not co-relate to the amount of pain - you can have peeps with a lot of changes on X-ray and yet completely pain-free (and vise verse).

Sorry to hear that a SF was confirmed but very glad that your pain has reduced.

joints dont hurt. I have also heard that slugsta....pretty sure Joss NAylor shouldnt be able to run/stand or anything as he has no cartlidge in his knees. Also massage friend of mine has terrible knees, but on an MRI they look pretty much ok.

I will be speaking to consulatant/physio about what next, and what not to do. But i am thinking that less cycling will have to be an option, and even then just 'gentle'.

I really wish I could get real time feedback on when i do things, i.e. Nope thats too much, as its damaging.

oh and I am also VERY glad that the RSD swelling and pain has gone. Very very glad.

I'd love real time feedback too, and my own MRI and my own consultant *sigh*

    oh and my own fizzy,

basically I'd love to be a professional athlete.  But I'm slow and not likely to ever win anything so it's a bit of a pipedream image

  • Options

oh wow, that is really clear.

So, it's not an actual break but the beginning of one?

    Nick LNick L ✭✭✭

Yup....the white spot on the upper middle and top right image, part way up what is the right leg (you are viewing face on)

Think thats clear, look at this beauty.....

although it doesnt show 'anything obvious'. As one would expect

    Wow, modern technology is fab

How are the legs feeling in general though?

  • Options

    Fine I think shims.

Certainly the one area (whiere the SF is) which did feel odd when I poked it etc (but wasnt where the real pain was when I ran) doesnt hurt now. SO thats good.

Clearly that doesnt mean I am mended though, so wont be rerturning to my semi-professional hopscotch career JUST yet!

Have a bit of a cold at the moment - or at least I think so, did think it could be hayfever, but no runny nose, scratchy eyes just sore throat, and fuzzy head.

    Modern tech is fab.....

Good, keep up the healing.  Glad to hear that you're not going to go and do a D2D on me.

Hope the hayfever and or cold goes soon.  I hate that feeling.

It's always good to get the cold at the time of the injury though.   Get it all out the way in one go.

Ha, no as I said to FB I have more between my ears than her....not much, but know that I need to be careful. Ironically, when first diagnosed, I was too careful which was what caused the RSD.....and this thread - which is now more inane ramblings, mostly between you and me!

I have joined the Lido in town, which if you are ever up this way visiting your sis, I can heartily recommend it. Any developments on the house move you were mulling over some time back?

Although it is heaving when its sunny and in school holidays.

ooh update on my sis.... She is on a Greek island with an icecream van image

They went out a few weeks ago to make a go of it.  There are no icecream vans on the whole island so they thought, hey, why not be the first.  Most of the tourists are English so hopefully kerching image

She is loving it and they also have someone on the island who wants to buy their icecream wholesale in the winter so that is also covered.

I'll miss my visits to Ross though.  It's lovely over that way.

Our plans for buggering off down that way are on hold at the mo as I'm getting a new job in Lahnden.  We need to improve the bank balance before we can move so we shall see how things go.
