Fizzio: re the woman thing ..dont feel too bad as I though Slot was a woman but have since been corrected image

I take enough gels for one an hour, but have someone (my father) meeting me halfway to give me a new; fully stocked, running belt.

Slot; agree re work!  Sucks and really struggling to concentrate!

  • Options
I'm going with 10 gels, one every 40 mins. It's surprising how much 10 gels end up weighing though, but I don't have any other option.
  • Options

I carried a load of them in 2006......most of them ended up being carried all the way back to the hotel  image

I used two or three at most I reckon

I will take about 5 with me - after that I am pretty sick of them anyway

I'm taking packets of fruit pastilles and starburst (opal fruits).  Lovely!

Happy birthday Carmen, we have a medal waiting for you in SA!

Someone is packing lucozade? We have that in SA.

I am not enjoying work at all. Well I am not having a fantastic time allround.

Foot is still around 7/10, I am taking anti inflammatories which I will have to quit by Wednesday latest. This really disturbs my stomach. Two nights in a row now I have had a dream where I missed the start. Winter has arrived and Wednesday will be 14 degrees max. Don't laugh, I don't want to run when it's 'cold', terrified of getting sick. My daughter has a chest infection I try to help her but treat her as if she is a leper. Yesterday I did something to my hip / backside which hurts. Can we just fast forward to 29/05/11 05:30 please. I did 18km on Sat and 12km yesterday. Today is a rest day and tomorrow I will do 10km and then I am done, I swear.

I normally took 6 gels as like Keith, I can't stand them after 6 hours. This year I ghave been trying GU sweets and they work a treat so I will take a packet.

PS Good luck wth the volcanic cloud.

Oh another thing, I get up at 3am on race day and get to the start no later than 04:30. (In my dreams this is quite different though)

    Happy Birthday Carmen!! image

Not too much cake now image

I'm supposed to be packing... haven't even started yet! I have some kind of aversion to packing and keep procrastinating until my back's against the wall.

Worried about the ash cloud... yesterday they said it wouldn't get here until later in the week, but now they're saying it will get here by tomorrow morning.

Re the gels debate... I'll only take 5 or 6 and then rely on proper food from the feed stations.

Swayer... thanks for the tracker link image

Great thanks. 5 or 6 will do and perhaps a tube of wine gums and a couple of elevenses bars. Will try to get a bum bag at the expo.
Whats the toilet situation en route? regular portaloos? Or do you have to squat down in public? Are there queues?

Going to treat myself to a Comrades tracksuit or  warm jacket . Hoping that I will be able to get them at the expo too.

Happy birthday Carmen. Hope you have a lovely day and lots of cake. Yum.

Re. the chip...if you ordered one then you should have received an email...I did today...to say that I collect it from registration and giving me a number for it. It was 12USD and was confirmed at the same time as payment for the race.

This ash cloud thing is adding to the nerves...imagine getting through all the training, avoiding illness/injury etc and then something else comes along and screws it up.

I keep having strange dreams about missing the start too or being at totally the wrong race.

Six year old is still not well and looking at her throat I think we're off to the dr tomorrow. Clive might have to avoid home given how easily he seems to get tonsillitis and always before an event too.

Don't do gels but hope that energade and water from the aid stations plus my trusty strawberry laces and some salt and seed Power bars...great for when you're sick of the sweet stuff...will be enough. Sue W might put some opal fruits in now too though...great idea.

Fingers crossed for all the things that could go wrong.

It's OK Fizz, I thought JB was a girl too. However, Pete, act like a woman - follow your instincts - as unless I have had an instantaneous sex change I still belong to the 'squat' as opposed to 'stand' brigade. FYI: Fido thought the same until she met me, so you are not alone. Anyway, no need to be embarrassed as it takes more than that to offend me although I am now fascinated by how you thought otherwise........(I know the pic is small & low res, but).image.

I'm taking 11 gels (1 an hour) somehow crammed into my bumbag and bottle belt, plus jelly babies until they morph into 1 big jellyblob in the heat, plus nuun tablets, plus salt. I will be a regular travelling bagman, sorry woman. Prob won't consume them all as like Keith get sick of sweet stuff after about 5 hours, and defo no food for me - simply cannot 'eat' only swallow whilst trotting along.

Toilets en route. Fizz, have you not been following the fascinating discourse on that topic that has come up regularly over the past 5 months? There is the fjnbos, what more do you need?

Sporta: good luck re:niggles, and good tip re: lucozade, thanks.

Heading out tonight from Denver, Colorado to Capetown via Frankfurt. At this point, seems only ash cloud issues may be slight routing changes for the polar routes. I will chill out in Capetown for a couple of days, then Durban Friday afternoon in time for pasta party at Suncoast Casino. As I have done for two previous trips, I'll be staying at The Quarters Hotel on Florida Road. I prefer this area as you can feel safe walking around and numerous restaurants and watering holes along Florida Road. (including the Tiller Bar, which has my much-needed Guinness on draught)

I'll take 5-6 gels but then just rely on the plentiful food available en route.

Seem to have caught a slight cold over the past couple of days, but better now than later in the week I guess.

    Larry, safe trip.

I will also be staying at Florida Road as that is where my father lives ... maybe when it gets dark on Monday we should all leave Joe Cools and head to the Tiller Bar then??  Lots of places to eat and the best steaks I ever had served there at the Butcher Boys restuarant.

  • Options
Thanks Peter. Butcher Boys is a good suggestion. I plan to have my post-Comrades meal there Sunday night if I can manage to stay awake. Good food and very reasonable prices. And if I can manage that, I surely can manage some Guinness at Tiller Sunday night.

I'm going to try and make Joe Cools Monday but unfortunately have a 5pm flight back to the states. Guessing I will hit Tiller Bar Saturday afternoon for a pint or two to take the edge off. (Abstaining from alcohol pre-race, while recommended by some, isn't for meimage)

By the way, I know nobody on this forum would know me by sight, but if you see someone with shirt that says Run Colorado (and has the Colorado state flag on it), that would be me! (I'll also have that weird American accentimage)

Fingers crossed for us all re trhe ash cloud. At least at the moment it isn't story number one on the news...Please stay away for a few more days....

I ran with my belt on sunday full of goodies. Had about 6 gels, loads of small mini mars bars and some kellogs rice crispie cakes. Based on how i felt during the second half of connomara, i don't reckon i will be able to stomach much sweet stuff in the form of gels. Going to eat loads off the tables though....isn't that what we are paying our money forimage

And just found out i am visiting expo on the friday now. So if i am around between 2-3 will have a mosey around the international area and see if i spot any of you.

    Just resting and praying nowimage

    Hey fellow Comrades

Im back for my third and looking forward to meeting up with some of you at the expo, I arrive Friday lunchtimish.

Have had a few setbacks with my training, havent been able to do the long stuff, so will rely on ibuprofen and an inability to quit.

This is all because I know it will be worth it - and so will you.

    Taper well everyone.

See some of you in the 12hour bus.

Gels - I used to take enough for the whole race but found that I got sick of them at around half way and carried the rest unnecessarily. So for the last few years I've only taken enough for the first half and then rely on the tables in the second half.

Bl*%@y Ash Cloud - there's always some last minute hurdle isn't there? Last year I had to re-book my flights as BA went on strike!

Can't even tell you guys how much I am praying that ash cloud stays away. It would be awful if you were to miss out due to it.

I seem to be on the mend so I am going to be bold enough to update my time prediction. I am now hoping to run 7:25 to bump me up to silver.

Hope to meet some of you at the expo on Friday.

    Happy birthday Carmen!

Neil / Malc, all this talk of food and gels make me think of that big cake-loaf you took round with you last year. What kind was it again? One of those Tate & Lyle syrup numbers? I couldn't believe you'd eaten it all by the time I saw you at the finish.

Ash cloud, Ryan Giggs, it's all going off, man - innit. Next thing you know we'll have Comrades trending on twitter. Nahhh... never enough loons out there to make it that popular.
Stay cool everybody. Ride the waves.

What advice would you give in terms of hoe much cash to carry in South Africa?

Is it relatively easy to get it out of your account, or do I have to carry it all around in a body wallet?
