I have popped an e-mail to 8iron asking if we can take over transition volunteering - I'll keep everyone up to speed with his reply. transition will be easier to man than anything out on the course but we can still have a ball!
Nice one FB. I really enjoyed working in transition in Perth as you get to speak to lots of the athletes, hard work though but worth it, 4500 plastic bags anyone
Looking forward to it already, and being able to get on the booze also Mr Zuvai.
Nice report FF and Alan take care of yourself. I have to report that I had my pre 1/2 IM race on Sunday. Bike course was quite technical and I fell off my bike on a descent while coming off a bend and having my rear wheel tackled by a small road indentation I did not see.
I somehow have the feeling it was not carelessness that brought me down but I came down hard and at very high speed. I smashed my forerunner to bits and ended pinned by my bike while tumbling which probably saved it from quite a bit of damage. I ended with less road rash than you would expect but it is quite ugly on my shoulder.
Ran a bit yesterday and I will turbo today for the appointed 2 hours but swimming is banned for a while. I dont think it compromises the race which is in 5 weeks but it will impact my training a bit. I can count myself quite happy because I was racing with my wife and she fell on gravel on the same race (how unlucky is that!). She has decided to quit triathlons after that which is sad. Any words of advice on how to support her?
when I came off I wasn't travelling fast but I think it was the shock of it and the feeling of what might have happened worse than the actual injuries.........
I think its abit like falling off a horse you have to get back on and into it all again..........
sorry to hear that you both came off and hope you both heal quickly
Yep, another one for trying to get back on as soon as possible. Leave too much time, and think too much about what could have been, and it'll be even more of a challenge.
Done a bit of running, some very muddy mountain biking and a sea swim but for some reason this week I am absolutely cream crackered so I am taking the week off and chilling will do some trail and sea swimming saturday and am going to the Wadebridge tri on sunday,,,,,,,,,,,,,to spectate!
FB what a great idea about the transition bit early for me to commit yet but its a very definate possible!
I will not do Wales again not cause I do not think it would disapoint but because it was so feckin hard
actually I can see myself doing it again at some point especially if some mates were gonna go for it I am glad i did the first, but can onlysee this one going from strength to strenght
Weird Ridgeback, but same here. First two weeks back from Tenby, training as usual. Last weekend though, just no energy. Out on the bike on Saturday and binned it. Sunday, binned the run after 1km. Today though, bike seemed OK again.
I have been for a few runs now and am slowly getting the legs back together...I think. I have had the following niggles, right knee, right hip flexor (very very tight) and left hamstring (tweaked). I have been to the physio which I think helped massively. Went for a run on one of regular trails today, but had no energy. Anyway with each it run it is clicking back together better...doing quite a few stretches as well to get the legs slicked up.
I am pushing it a bit as have Abingdon Marathon in less than 3 weeks now. So a balancing act with getting back into things and at this stage looking forward/hoping the body gets back together in the nick of time to put in a good race.
At the pool this lunchtime I saw a chap wearing an IM Wales cap. I congratulated him and got chatting. He was struggling to swim more than a few lengths without needing a rest. A mate of his had done Lanza previously and confirmed that Wales was equally as hard. But he enjoyed it and said there were "loads of pirates" around.
I did an off-road tri last Saturday - GB Champs and came 2nd in a/g, Petal won hers - but IM Wales was still in the legs as it took me ages to get going on the bike and run and it was bloody hard work.
trying a 90km MTB ride this weekend - be interesting to see how the legs work.
Think it is ITB. Couldn't resist running despite an ongoing niggle and went for a 5 mile run and walked the last mile home thinking my left knee was going to give out. Now stairs are posing a problem with severe (sporadic) knee pain. Off to the physio tonight but running definitley out the window for some time.
Still, best time of the year to be injured if at all I suppose.
Darkness, when you see the physio as well as ITB, mention the hip flexor.
Lengthening the stride relieved my knee problem (had to walk as well on the first run) and then through process of elimination figured it was the hip flexor...stretches, physio, running and rest have loosened it up.
boy oh boy you're in for some fun when the physio has a go at the ITB and then the HipFlexor - enjoy
I am expecting a load of pain - have been foam rolling it myself and that hurts like a bar steward.
Interesting to hear what you say about the Hip flexor - I can't cross my left leg over my right when sitting down as I get severe pain in the front of my HIP, but that only seems to have come on since hurting my knee which I assumed was ITB (as pain on outside).
At least it sounds like you were not out for too long with it?
DF, not out for long, about one week of taking it carefully (streching, small runs, building from 4m to 10m) but then yesterday went and undid a lot of progress. IMW still in my legs it would seem as found a 14 mile run a whole more difficult than expected.
CL, I hope you haven't set yourself back too badly. It is bloody hard to rest! Cartilage problem for me rather than ITB so no running at all for at least 2 weeks and only gentle cycling. Rehab is quad strengthening exercises. Swimming is getting better though!
Guys In a fit of post ironman enthusiasm I signed up for the Cornish Marathon in November and started training as well but I soon realised I was toast after Wales with stacks of niggles so I have just been having fun running trails with slower pals riding with the kids and the odd leasuirely sea swim and am feeling so much better for it the Cornish is on hold, and I am chilling and doing nthing strucured for at least the next month, just basking in the glow of a job well done, happy days may start planning next years race calendar son though nothing with a I and Man in it mind!
I've been pretty much off running since IMW, but foot now seems to be recovered so I'm v keen to get back into it, esp with Ballbuster 6 weeks away. Venturing into the world of cyclocross (on a MTB) has been fun so far, though it was really too hot on Saturday and I was v glad the novice event was only 30 minutes. I recommend it (MTBs are definitely welcome) as a great way to get a hard session in over the autumn / winter.
Nothing else to report - oh yes, just entered IM Wales 2012...
Oh gawd - thought I'd sneaked that one in. Hoping for a swim on Friday but may end up being stuck at home waiting for a new fridge to be delivered. Cyclocross In Hemel in 2 weeks?

thanks a lot seren!
Yeah I think she feels that way as well, she is scared of the fact in can actually be worse but she is in fear now nonetheless.
I am fine with it I guess ... I am looking forward to my 1/2 IM and it has no steep hills

Fair play to you both, FB. Congrats and well done!
Hope not too dumb a question, but does anybody have an inkling as to when they'll open for 2012 entries??
I am wrecked!

woohoo.... its official .. September 16th ... entries open after C4 programme on Sunday
