I think we now need to know who the organisers are.
if it's the same lot as IMUK that could be a big bubble burster for many and could also send a sign to say IMUK will die.
if it's someone different, then their track record will be under some scrutiny as nobody would want another few years of the relative fiasco of IMUK.
I suspect however that WTC will have a lot of organisational say in IMW irrespective and now that they keep the licence themselves rather than franchise
Here is the 'formal' announcement of the new Ironman Wales event, courtesy of IRONMAN European Headquarters.
Today, World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) announces the addition of Ironman Wales to its calendar of events. Scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, Ironman Wales will take place in the county of Pembrokeshire in the southwest of Wales and will offer a total of 50 qualifying slots to the Ford Ironman World Championship taking place in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Registration for the 2011 event opens on Oct. 1, 2010, on www.ironmanwales.com.
Located on Wales’ southwest coast, Pembrokeshire is known for the breathtaking landscape of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, featuring miles of sandy beaches and a spectacular coastline.
The start of the race is at South Beach in the seaside village of Tenby. Athletes will swim 3.8K in the waters of Camarthen Bay before taking on a 180K bike course through the scenic countryside of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, passing numerous castles and iconic landmarks. The medieval town walls and picturesque beachfront provide an impressive backdrop for the marathon through Tenby.
Welsh Assembly Government Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said: ”The Welsh Assembly Government is delighted to support Ironman Wales over a three year period. This event will raise the profile of Wales and Pembrokeshire as a destination for sport and will encourage visits for both recreational and training purposes. With an expectation for the need of approx. 8,000 room nights in Pembrokeshire during the shoulder season this will also be an added bonus for the area’s tourism industry. The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to encourage people to live a healthier, more active lifestyle through its Change4Life programme, with the side-events offered by the event organisers such as IronKids and Everyone’s Run there will be an opportunity for everyone to get involved. The Assembly Government will also launch its Major Events Strategy next week which aims to develop a sustainable portfolio of world class events which enhances Wales’ international reputation and delivers long term economic, social and cultural benefits for the people of Wales.“
Matthew Evans of Activity Wales, local partner of Ironman Wales said this about the race: “Activity Wales is extremely excited to have been able to bring such a high profile world class brand to Pembrokeshire. The National Park that is Pembrokeshire will offer athletes a stunning course, whilst the passion of the local villages and towns will really create a European style atmosphere for supporters and athletes. This will be a truly memorable event and with Tenby's infrastructure athletes really will just take over the town to create what will be an incredible week.”
Kai Walter, Managing Director of Ironman European Headquarters, is pleased with the location of the first Ironman Wales: “Tenby and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park have a very special atmosphere. Ironman Wales is sure to attract triathletes from all over the world who wish to experience a challenging race in a unique location.”
