Hi Nick. What other tri distance have you done?

I am having a forced weekend off, but will be back training with vengence next week as last week I couldn't fit on as much running as I would have liked. Should be able to start my regular cycles into work too, subject to how early it starts getting dark. Should be until the clocks go back and then I may have to find a different route with better/any (!) lighting. Preferred route is an off road cycle trail.

I am interested in the kind of swim sessions people do. I had been doing pyramid sessions, starting with 5 lengths and going down and back up. But now I am getting more concerned with distance I find myself just going and doing the distance without much structure. Have tried doing eight sets of eight lengths, and having a different focus to each set of eight... Any ideas how to shape my focus?
  • bugger - it's full already so had to go on the waiting list
  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭
Whah!!!!! What are the chances of getting in from the waiting list?
  • depends on how many are on there and how many drop out I guess - so really can't give you an answer

but if NC entered on the 15th, my view is that the list can't be that long yet so get on it now. the higher up the list, the better the chance.

the side benefit is it also means you hang onto your cash a bit longer!!
  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭

    On reserve list!!!!

Gosh - it sold out in eight days!!! Fingers crossed then. I wonder if/when places are more likely to become available? Easter maybe, when people realise they haven't done the training?

  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭

Right - come on then, where is all this support I need for my Tri training?????

Still on the reserve list by all accounts..... wish someone would drop out (or a few people).... fb - have you heard anything??

    Bootise!! Where are you???

Right, so here is my training from last week and my plan for next week....

    Last week:
Mon: 30 mins hard on bike, 30mins half mile swim
    Tues: Rest
    Weds: Circuits
Thurs: 7.5 mile run (on treadmill - to icy round here)
Fri: 1hr spin classes, 2 mile treadmill
    Sat: 2k swim
Sun: Should have been a 5k race, but race was cancelled so I ran a hard 5k on treadmill.

    This week:
    Mon: Rest & leg massage
    Tues: 6 mile run
Weds: Circuits, maybe with some bike work beforehand
    Thurs: Swim 1k
    Fri: 8 mile run
Sat: Bike work, maybe a body pump class
    Sun: 2k swim

I'm getting a bit frustrated that I'm not able to fit in the running miles I used to. I am trying to build up to a half marathon at the end of March and was hoping for a sub-51 10k in January, but I'm not sure I'll manage that now. I did sub-53 in September when my longest run was at 6 miles. That's up to 8 now, but I'm not sure that it will shave 2 minutes off my time....

Am loving the swimming though! I'm only managing a couple of sessions a week though, one I am keeping fairly short, and the other I have managed to build up to 2k (which I am really pleased with!).

Biking - I'm just getting it done - and am going to start using spin classes through the winter to develop stength in this area. I would have done more outside if the weather hadn't gone icy. There is a lovely 20 mile route I can do quite easily, and I'm hoping that Santa buys me a bike rack for the car so I can explore other places in the Spring.

What is everyone else up to?

  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭

I'm going to keep boing-ing this, even if it means talking to myself!

Yesterdays leg massage was LOVELY. Have another booked in two weeks time and I'm going to get my back done then too.

Today will be a 5-6 mile run in the gym as I am too chicken to go running in the ice and get very frustrated if I have to pick out a path hopping slowly around the place.

Need to book onto circuits for tomorrow and hopefully have a bit of a bike ride beforehand too. Christmas party season officially starts for me tomorrow, but I'm going to be good and only have one drink, then lots of water, and then have a lovely session in the gym. Got to keep it all up since I found my Christmas day dress at the weekend and I need to be able to still fit into it in 18 days time!

Good news of the day... I am 1% less fatty than I was at the start of November. Woohooo! I'm hoping to only be around 20% fatty for June next year.... 4% to go!

So... where is the training inspiration guys?!?!

I have realised that I only have 6 months now, and really need some help. Whilst I am happy that I have managed to get my longer swim built up and my running is generally going to plan, my cycling has disappeared along the way for some reason.

I also need a back up in case being on the waiting list for Windsor doesn't get me a place in the end. I suppose I could just plan to do the distance that weekend anyway, just be more laid back about it. But I really want to practice the transition process and feel more confident in that. Any ideas?

My plan for now though is...
Running: Build up running to half mara for end of March, then maintain a 10 mile run once a week
Swimming: Twice a week up to March, then join Tri club for their sessions and some OW swimming
Biking: Setting monthly targets, eventually building up to cycling to work 2-3 times a week and a long ride every fortnight of 40-50 miles

How does that sound generally? Just to get my ability in all three disciplines up to scratch....?

  • you will cruise it with that sort of training.

Its only 2 and a half  to 3 hours of activity, half of which you sit down for......

If its your first tri, and you want this one to be good, go and do a sprint, so you get the idea of the logistics / transition stuff....

However, if you want to race this (ie be genuinely fighting for age group podiums), then thats a totally different kettle fo fish, and I you'll have to work / train hard as well as putting in the distance.

ps as you have noticed, most of the encouragement / support is around longer distance races - pirates specialise in conscripting newbies and encouraging them to do IM distance races.
As we are old and fat, we find it easier to do long slow races than short f**ing hard efforts.    image

Thanks Cannon. I was hoping to use this as a warm up for a HIM in July, so my training should put me in good stead for an olympic distance event. I'm not in that other kettle of fish - I know my limits!

I've done a couple of Sprints (have another planned for May) and would be happy to be in the top 50-60% at the moment.... though of course, I'll be happy just to get around....but I am competitive so I will want to do as well as I can, and being in the middle (rather than in the bottom quarter which is where I have been in the Sprints) would be nice!

Just in case I don't get a place in Windsor, I have found the Roadford Triathlon down in the South-West which is just £60, looks lovely, and is close enough for me to visit family at the same time.

And if I DO get a place in Windsor as well.... Roadford is 4 weeks before Windsor, so maybe I'll do both...! Yikes!!!

I really like the idea of Olympic distance though, so why not do a couple, eh?!

    I'm getting quite excited now!

  • right i'm back!!! had a bit of a break due to injury etc.. heres's what i've got lined up

east grinstead tri on 15th may

    windsor tri on 12th june

hever tri on 25th sept!! training hasn't been great.. mostly running since november/december.. time to get back int he pool.. signed up to a 5km swimathon for april so hope that will get me back in the pool !!!

  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭

Ooo, Bootsie! We are practically the same!

I am going to do the 5k swimathon too! I'm only on 2k at the moment, but I am going to follow Duncan Goodhew's 10 week training plan (cos that's all it is!) and hope for the best!

And my first tri is on 15th May too, down in Roadford, South West kind of way. If I get a place in Windsor great, but I don't know the liklihood of that. Plus it will be a lot of travelling that I'm not sure I can justfy really since I have the Trentham thing on 10th July the following month too.

Looking forward to sharing progress... I have a 'long swim' planned today which involves just getting in the pool and swimming for as far as I can in an hour. I'm hoping 2k.

  • i was looking at the plan.. it only seems to show one session a week.. are you supposed to just repeat that or do your own thing for the other session?

i'm going to do a swim tomorrow morning and see how i get on.. not a long one though, maybe just a training drill session or something like that! Long swim either sat or sunday morning and see how i get on.. gotta do long run the other weekend morning because of brighton half marathon in a few weeks!

  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭
I'm going to do the session suggested once a week, and then do a pyramid or shorter session another time in the week. And maybe a third session if I have time, though if my endurance is being tested over 10 weeks up to 5k, then I don't think I necessarily need a third swim session and should focus my attendion on the bike, since that is apparently the 'critical' discipline. Shame it's my least favourite!!!!
  • its my least fav too image gotta get out there though soon! turbo at the moment for me but fingers crossed for the weekend
  • JEvaNsJEvaNs ✭✭✭

I've worked out that on Saturday mornings I could go to the gym and do a spin session, then a run, then another spin class, and another run, and a third spin class... and then a run or a swim. I think this will be my secret weapon in training!! I'm not doing it this weekend coming, but 29th Jan I'm going to try 2 reps of it. 45 mins spin then 45 mins run x 2. Possibly with a bike ride to they gym and back (though I might treat myself to a bus ride...!).

I'm GOING to be a good bike rider!!!

Oo - and I did 100 lengths in an hour. Somehow for the Swimathon I need to be able to swim that twice. Hmmm.....

  • lol! you are doing much better than me.. did 1 mile this morning in 45 mins.. so will do a long swim this weekend and see how that goes.. maybe a 1.5-2km straight and see what time i do it in..

no brick training as yet here but might try and fit in a long bike over the weekend iwth a nice run.. doing my 10 mile run tonight all going well .. so much to do so little time!

  • Hi,

who else is signed up for this tri???

  • Am doing this for the second time. Have nice new bike to ride it on too....

    Best times for Swimmathon 5km?
