A really good event but are we 100% certain on the distance? I only jogged around with a friend last year but it was significantly long on both our Garmins... The link to the map of the course on the website even has it at 13.2 miles!
Well, to be honest, I care about the distance. I know I will almost certainly get huge stick for saying it but a half marathon is a specific distance and a race that sells itself as such should be accurate. Sorry - I take it all too seriously, am OCD and a statto and all that...
It was a brilliant race - it was just wasn't a half marathon.
Daniel, I know I would definitely want to run over distance rather than under. At least you can then claim you've run the full half-marathon as opposed to the Cardiff half last year which measured 12.9! Also Garmins are excellent but definitely not 100% accurate. And how do you know you followed the shortest route? Admittedly that's a bit easier in this race as the towpath's narrower than your average road.
Anyway, I've entered again this year and am looking forward to another great race.
I gotta agree with GE even though he's a w fan (I cannt even type the word it is so painfull) and I am a WBA fan. Better to be a long course rather than short. I tend to agree it is probably long.
Its a great race, cannt wait for it, my third running.
Valid points all and I'm sure I'll end up running. I just am a bit mystified - it should be the easiest course you could think of to get accurate! It isn't rocket science on a canal path, the start and finish is arbitrary as it is... Sorry, I'm just like Stadler and Waldorf....
They had to change the end last year can't remember why but we finished on the opposite side. I don't care either way 3rd time for me and I just enjoy it because it's different...
If you lot are Wolves fans, Villa fans, and WBA fans, would anyone be interested in coming to one of our Q & A charity nights in Sedgeley over the next few weeks? We have
Tuesday 5th April 2011 – Gary Shaw at the Cabin
Tuesday 19th April 2011 – Matt Murray at the Cabin
Thursday 19th May 2011 – Cyrille Regis at the Cabin
Tickets £7 and all profits go towards the Phoenix Challenge's goal of raising £30ooo for 3 charities. In box me if your interested.
All, Dont worry about the distance its just a bit over a half and suprisingly not close to PB for me, about 4 mins off I think. Its a great run and do it for the joy of running.
Each night has a pretty cool raffle prize as well. Dont hold me to it, but I think Dave said at the Wolves night theres a signed shirt, at the villa night theres a box at a villa match.
Goldeagle, totally flat apart from the little bridges which break your pace a bit, you only pass three locks which you descend on, 400 yard long tunnel which you have to reduce speed slightly in. There is a slight lack of traction on the path which may account for a little loss over the distance. But I agree, it should be a PB course but strangly not so.
Signed up and now need to start getting the miles in. This will be my second half marathon and I'm hoping it's better than last years EDF Birmingham Half. Hopefully I don't have wait 9 minutes to get over the finish line.
Having just looked at the website and read through all the posts above, I'm wishing I was doing it again (it would be my fourth). I shouldn't really have done it last year as I was carrying an injury and really struggled. Unfortunately (perhaps) I've signed up for the Humber Bridge HM a week (actually six days) before.
Stuart/Irondog - need any volunteers?
Wingy - absolutely definitely better than that other B'ham HM!
HTA/RK, what you boys playing at, you know it should be number one in your race calender..... Will miss you and to think I was going to get the beer in for you both at the end of this years run...

He'll just have to dream on for another year

It's a challenge. It's obviously pretty flat (except for the bridges) so you would think it's a definite PB but strangely it isn't..........

HTA - At least you know where you'll be drinking afterwards...
The Caldecotte Arms should have a busy weekend!
They sell beer, don't they?
I believe it's race HQ...
Good point !
I think I might be out too
I'm looking at doing the Osmotherley 33 instead in preparation for the Lakeland 50. But if I don't, you can bet I'll be BBCHM-ing it as usual
