  • Plum that is way too much to spend on my SS presentimage
  • Have a look on Decathlon they have some on deals I saw on friday.
  • I saw a mail with turbo deals on it for this weekend
    Cant remember which but try
    Evans
    Wiggle
    Pro bike kit
    All terain bikes
    Chain reaction

Can't remnant which one it was but.....
  • Wiggle have a deal going at the moment....just wondered if any more were about

kk you have seen my flat, I cant hang my washing on rollers you dopey mare

Seren, we can share it when you move in sweetie

  • I just bought an Elite Crono Fluid ElastoGel from Wiggle. having done some searching around it was about the best deal on this model if you include free postage. I already had one of them - we are a 2 turbo household image - so wanted that specific model. it's also pretty quiet which might help Plum?
  • Had the same model delivered this morning, FB.... the elite crono fluid elite fluid crono elasto fluid crono gel fluid crono thingumy from wiggle. Seemed a decent deal with about 30% off the RRP. Perhpas would have been even cheaper if they hadn't had to stuff so much guff in the product name.

With a bit of luck and a fair wind, I'll have it set up by Christmas, and I'll have used it by January.

  • Thanks FB, was looking at that specific one yesterday and couldnt find it cheaper anywhere alse

One is winging its way towards me as we speak.......all I need to do now is get my lardy arse on it

I am now a two turbo, five bike household  image

A nuice noisy fan one for when the neighbours have pissed me off and a nice quiet one as well.

Just a quick question as the local tri club has started doing group turbo sessions how difficult would it be to sling it on my back to cyle there if I habe a suitable bag?

  • yeh - the name's a bit of a gobfull...good product though
  • I wouldn't try and carry my turbo on my bike.  The magnetic brake unit and flywheel is very heavy.
  • +1 with Mr W - but if it's only a short ride then perhaps worth a try?? it's not the weight so much - more the size even when folded
  • i was thinking along the lines of a bag like the paper boys and girls have. it should fold up into one of those and it is only a couple of miles so a bit of foam and a bit of strategic weight distribution......

  • worth a go I guess
  • Erm..... i'm guessing this is mad heresy on my part, but instead of devising a hugely complex, expensive, inconvenient and potentially dangerous way to set up a static, indoor, cycle training group.... couldn't you all just go spinning? Failing that, if you're set up ready to ride over to the group turbo session.... why not leave your 6kg box at home and just carry on riding???

I don't think I'm cut out for this triathlon lark. Clearly something missing in my DNA.

  • spinning is fine to an extent but the bikes aren't good enough when compared to riding your own steed on a turbo. and many spinning sessions have limitations - instructors can vary in ability; club memberships often needed for entry; and cost...

as for carrying on riding - sure, good idea, but this session is probably one night a week over winter when evening riding isn't so much fun in the dark. there are weekends for road rides
  • I would have to ride for probably 40 mins to get to roads away from SE London that I felt safe to actually get some training in on. I ride to worl on th MTB a couple of days a week in whatever the weather (showers at work are quite handy) and whenever it is possible go out for a longer road bike at the weekendt
I could and do turbo at home but find it pretty soul destroying on my own though I have learnt to TTFU and get on with it, Just thought a couple of testosterone fuelled sessions with some of the young boys at the tri club might get me into double figures average speed wise over a short distance. also with two I can have friends round for a group session........... if I had any friends that is  image

  • Our tri club run a turbo session through the winter at a local hall.   It's take your own turbo, which to me is sounding a bit of an effort (and I have no intention of carrying it on my back image) but I shall give it a go tomorrow and see how it goes.  I turbo at home but for the company and a few laughs with the group.........it will be worth a go.  I love spin classes and will be interested to see how different this will be........I am thinking there isn't gonna be loud music booming image which is something I enjoy at spin....but we shall see.
  • I think spinning classes are ok, if they are cycling orientated
I had one instructor who was excellent - ie hit a flat road ( 60% hr) for 15 mins then seated/ standing climbs for 20
    Mins etc

The other 10 instructors I have seen do 3 min song specififc workouts including pressups / low squats as you cycle - all meaningless rubbish
I like the music / group dynamic of 20 people all in sync doing a good sesh - just most classes are not really cycling specific at all

Turbo - get you own tunes/ music. Get a good planned session. The down side is its lonely without eye candy to take your mind offs the pain!
  • I surpassed my own expectations and set up the kit last night for a quick roll. Hugely disappointed so far, so I'm guessing that I've rigged it badly, unless.....

.... is it supposed to feel like one of those cronky old exercise bikes from the 1980's? The ones that people used to ride with towelling headbands on when they weren't playing squash or drinking Cinzano with Leonard Rossiter? They folded up like an ironing board and went in the back of the wardrobe until next January?

The pedal revolutions are jumpy and inconsistent. It feels like I'm riding up a steep, bumpy hill, with punctures in both tyres. And when I change from small to large front cog, the chain falls off. On the basis of all the "recreate the sensation of real road riding" marketing chat, I'm guessing that it's not meant to be like that and I've stuffed it up. Any similar experiences, please, or suggestions of how I might have spannered it?

    Cheers!

  • the elite crono fluid elite fluid crono elasto fluid crono gel fluid crono thingumy is a piece of pish to set up - you've clearly done something wrong or your gears are bolloxed!!

once set up right it's as smooth as silk. have you made sure you've tightened the clamp correctly?? it should be tight with the collar pushed in so it locks it in place. if you overtighten you can't push the collar in, if you undertighten it then the wheel will wobble everywhere. and the QR lever should sit in the gap in the clamp, not to the side as that will make it unstable.

the wheel should sit on the roller easily with the tripod arrangement. and make sure your tyres have good pressure in them - 100psi or so for best rolling

if your chain is falling off, that's an indexing issue on the bike and not the turbo so that needs sorting anyway.

    otherwise - have another go
  • Thanks for putting my mind at rest. Good to know it's my own incompetence rather than the product that's the root cause. I shall crack-on with a bit of work and then have another go at it at lunch.
  • turbo or rollers for around £130... any views??

  • what's your balance like?? rollers will give an experience closer to the real world but they do take some time to adapt to due to the balance needed. turbos from that perspective are easier as the bike is locked in - but there are a few forumites who have somehow managed to fall off while turboing!! feck knows how....
  • He's Plum. He's perfick in every way FB remember....image
  • Fixed the little monkey. I think. I'd put the wheel on a bit wonky and that, combined with a sporty couple of dings in the rims, was causing all sorts of ugly friction. Thanks for the advice FB! Happy to report that my crono elasto gelo pro-o fluido elito is now tickety-boo.

  • jolly d - now get your indexing sorted
  • Agree with FB on the Elite chrono whatever - I've got one, and I'm the least technichal person in the world. Easy to set up.
Just make sure your tyres are pumped up for a smoother ride.
  • Thanks holgs. All running nicely now that I've opened up the rear brake callipers a little to accommodate the buckle in the rear wheel. Enjoyed a horrible 40 mins on it before dinner last night. Nice kit.
  • Glad to hear it mate - necessary evil turbos - am doing lots of intervals on mine over the winter in an attempt to improve my speed.
  • try Tabata sessions guys - they will take some wind out of your sails. 4 mins of absolutely balls out effort. puke making stuff but supposedly good for you. I'm gearing up for some but haven't had the balls to try yet! (google Tabata turbo - loads of info)
