He plays with ridgeback when we go into the woods for a run/walk sometimes. At the mo his bestest friend is a young alsation bitch. They run around mental, good fun to watch.
we have just got our pooch (see little picture) but here's a bigger one of Dude
I wont be running with him as until he gets to 2 years old their bones aren't set so over exercise can do long term damage. Also labs don't run very well in a straight line - more like in every ditch, puddle, canal they can see, backwards, forwards and sideways so a 3 mile walk for me is probably nine mile for him
By the time tour lab is 12 months, when walking off the lead they will be running a lot more than when they run by your side.
I started running min with the OK of my vet at 14/15 months and if they run by your side its just a quick walk to them ... My lab gets bored with that at time and like to chase squirrals and jump in and out of anything wet.
But agree dont run them fast and long until 2, ie cycling while they run at your side
Ali .... I would say to wait at least until he is a year old to start the coach potatoe to beginner training for him and as the others have said at least 2 years for longer runs Your vet will be the best one to advise
I'm convinced that when I run 20km my Oz does at least 30, ranging up ahead of me a hundred metres, coming back to fetch me, running up and down the banks, etc. OH ran Frankfurt marathon with Ozzy's predecessor Snowy - he had actually entered him so the dog had a valid start number and everything, even got his own finisher's medal! We got recognized all over southern Germany due to racing with Snowy, nobody remembered our names but everyone knew him. He even got on TV coverage a few times.
My greyhounds must do double the distance of my runs - they're always off somewhere in the woods or fields, not too keen on water though - just a little paddle at the waters edge.
The fantastic thing about greyhounds is despite how much they love to run - they love to sleep even more - thy're known as the fastest couch potatoes going! It dosen't matter if it's a 5 minute walk or a 5 mile run - they sleep for the rest of the day - perfect pets .
Ditto mud filth and fox poo Nicko ( for the dogs not me)

Barkley - The newfoundland at 11 Months, better at swimming than running
Awwww gorgeous pictures.............
.............but my greyhound has just fainted at the idea of running 5 miles let alone 20 miles!
He considers maintaining the appearance of intelligence as per below is quite energetic enough!
Here's my training buddy...
He's 2 years old
I get the feeling this dog would only run for the ladies...

Yes, he can run farther than me no problem.
That's one of the reasons we went for an Airedale terrier
He would happily run all day given the chance
I like the look of him Pinot Noir, he's a cracker!
I think the missus might get a surprise this Christmas
