So that's ssc, JF2 and KR for Manchester - anyone else? If I'm still intact by Tuesday then I'll join you for a thread outing.

PMJ - good parkrun with a strong finish.
OO - great 100th parkrun and excellent performance by jnr OO. Smashing long run (sorry).
GD - nice MP run - pleased to hear all is back on track.
SJ - good dedication and a nice 16 miler.
Birch - another great long run for a cracking week's running.
    Leslie - nice HM.
Lorenzo - good parkrun prep for the race. Congrats to younger Lorenzito. Brilliant racing without a watch. You must be chuffed.
    GM - very sensible.
RFJ - well done on the sub 20 parkrun. And excellent pacing at Cranleigh! Good confidence booster.
    Blisters - good training.
MGTH - good race pace running.
Jools - well done battling the wind.
SB - well done on the sub 90 HM.
ssc - good 21 miler - looks promising for 3:15.
    JF2 - nice 20.
10 miles with 5x1M reps for me today - target was 10k pace, so 6:24 hopefully. Turned out at 6:26, 6:27, 6:34, 6:38, 6:45. Trying to be positive and think that I'm hopefully heading in the right direction.

    morning all

good long running OO, ssc (don't worry re pace in those adverse conditions), JF2
    nicely toughed out 17, Jools
    well executed half, SB
fine racing (and reporting) RFJ & Lorenzo
good session, Gul - don't get unduly stressed re pace - the effort is there & you are heading in the right direction . . . .

right, time to devise my week's schedule - last "big" (ish) week before taper  . . .

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

JF2- nice 20 and good week image

    GUL-speedy reps there

Birch- one more big week image

16m this morn which was as far as I could get after Saturday's half  image

  • Too many good long runs to mention, but it must be getting close to the main season. Is there a list somewhere?

New pair of shoes today, Nike Air Pegasus 31s. I think these are my first pair of 31s but are probably my 20th pair of Pegasus in total. I forgot to say that I ran the marathon in my Pegasus which are my training shoes. They have come down in weight over the years so are no longer bricks and are only about 50 g heavier than my lightweight racing shoes (Saucony Kinvara).

I'll definitely do the same again next time round as I had no problems with my feet during or after the race. In te past I have worried about weight and gone for light but I do all my runs in my training shoes so it seems odd not to race in them.

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

I've always liked the Air Pegasus, PMJ but have never bought them. I might give them another look after recent experiences.
I noticed that since Asics changed the GT21xx range to the redesigned GT2000 I've started to get Achilles issues. I ran with the updated v2 shoes on Saturday with heel cups to help the Achilles/calf issues I had last week. The Kayanos I treated myself to are really good but so expensive. I got my current pair for £70 (around half price) so I'm looking for a similar deal again.I now need to decide whether or not to race with them next week? They've done nearly 500 miles.

Anyone else noticed the difference in the new Asics GT2000 design?

Ran to the old cinder track today to seek protection for the troublesome lower right leg and all went well. Tried to do MP but running quicker just felt more comfy. Did alternate quicker miles and ended up with 5.5 miles at 6.55 pace. Too quick, not ideal but I'll call that a speed session and try to do all remaining runs at MP or slower.

Gym on the way home tonight for a good old stretch and core strength session,

    GD

I've moved to Adidas the last few pairs. It will be Bostom Boost for race day. I'm resting today. Last week was my peak, longest run and highest mileage.I don't have any more 20 milers planned...it feels a bit like the taper started...

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

Just took delivery of 2 new pairs of Nike air/zoom pegasus 31's today as it happens ,been using Nike air range for a good while now after Asics brought out the gt2000 which I didn't think were a patch on the old gt2170's image

Good to see some going well with training and racing.

Things going very poorly here.  My right leg still causing me difficulties, my pace is well down on what I am capable of and I'm having trouble on longer runs.  I wanted to do a 20 miler this Sunday but could only manage 12 at shuffle pace - dismal!  Only 3 runs this year of 20 miles+. I just keep trying though.

Anyway I will start work on Wednesday.  I've a job at the university - mix of academic teaching and project work.  Last day of idly being unemployed tomorrow so must get a few miles in.

RE: trainers, still sulking that the original Kinvaras have developed into an overweight bulky poor relation to the lightweight racers they use to be.  Had about seven pairs of them and would pay twice as much if I could find them today. Currently wearing mizuno hitogami, ok but firmer and less flexible than I would like.  Have heard Adidas Adios Boost are similar to the old Kinvaras - anyone had experience of these, if not any trainers thought to be similar?

  • That doesn't sound great BI - hope you're on the road to recovery shortly.

Gul - relax, relax, relax!! Sounds as though things are going fine for you at the moment. As I've suggested before, I think you should leave the Garmin behind and just run a few speedy sessions without worrying unduly about the pace.

I'll be going out in my shiny new Sayonaras tomorrow morning after semi-trashing the current pair in a muddy stretch on this morning's recovery run.

I decided to run the 15 miler last weekend in my Musha (flatter and lighter than the Sayonaras) without any ill effect so am very tempted to run London in them as well. Is it worth doing a 20 mile long run in them beforehand just to check everything is OK or am I worrying unnecessarily?

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

I tried out the new Adidas in my 20 miler a couple of weeks ago Lorenzo. VLM will be longer but slower- it does give some confidence.

Good luck with the new job Bike-It, hopefully the long runs will build as you recover- can be depressing to bail out I know.

  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

Birch - hope the final pre-taper week goes well.
Leslie - 16 is good going.
    GD - nice track session.
Bike It - hope the leg improves. Good luck with the job.
Lorenzo - I wouldn't have thought you'd necessarily need to do a 20 miler in the new shoes.
3 mile recovery run. Rather windy out there.

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

Hope things turn around on the leg front soon BI.

Lorenzo - I'd like the confidence of a long run in the new shoes going into a race, at least a HM. I'm going to risk my new Asics GT2000 v2 shoes in the Brighton Marathon. they were fine in the Surrey Half. I will be doing a 10 miler in them this Friday when I'll also use the heel cups I've used in the earlier pair that are near retirement.

    Birch- Excellent long run

    GM – Sensible beach running

Blist- Good cross-training and keep positive about your mara goal

SJ – Good 16 miler and congrats on the Jantastic 100%

MGTH – Good race pace run completed.

OO – Sorry to read about your fall and garmin damage. Good 23 miler bagged though

RFJ – Great controlled running and a PB in Cranleigh. Excellent Parkrun too

Jools – Solid 17 miler and wise not to push it

    SB –Great sub 1:30 HM

Scc – I’ll be interested to read how your 2 week taper works out. It’s something I have considered in the past but never tried yet. Good 21 miler completed

JF2 – Great 20 miler and weekly mileage. Enjoy the taper and good luck in Manchester.

Gul – That’s a good hard session in the bag. The minor slow down just shows you were pushing hard from the off.

LesH – Good running after the half. Thanks for congrats about my time in Omagh. Well done in Omagh too.

PMJ – Enjoy the new shoes. Good Parkrun on tired legs

GD – Good running and a wise choice running on softer ground.

Bike It – Sorry to hear about you injury woes. I hope your new job goes well.

Lor – I think a 15 mile run without any issues show the shoes will be fine. Great report and running in the 15 miler race. Good Parkrun too

I ran the Omagh HM on Saturday and was well chuffed to finish it in a new PB by almost a minute of 1:20:45. This was despite it being my third HM in 2 weeks, un-tapered and at the end of a 180 mile fortnight. I managed to pass a few people over the last few miles that always beat me and completed the last 5k in under 6 min/mile pace.

I followed it up with 18 miles on Sunday including 6 miles at MP+10%. This 12 week P&D plan is pretty intense but certainly seems to be working.

I put that time in the McMillan calculator and I’m told I could run a marathon in 2:49:56. Eek! Sub 2:50 scares the bejezzus out of me! My PB is 2:54:09 which was my initial goal but will see how the next weeks go before deciding on a marathon goal pace. All my training has been geared around MP of 6:40, MP+10% of 7:20 and MP+20% to 8:00. So a step up to goal pace of 6:28 for a marathon might be a bit much to ask.

  • Cracking HM there Badbark, especially given the mileage and lack of taper. You're flying at the moment, especially in that last 5K. Sounds as though P&D is working for you. When's the marathon?

I guess I was a bit ambiguous with my question about running the marathon in my Mushas. It was really about the wisdom of running 26 miles in a shoe that's more designed (weight, lower heel drop) for shorter races. I think I'll take them out on a 20 miler in a couple of weeks time and see how they / I feel afterwards.

Took the new Sayonaras out for a spin this morning - 9 hilly, blustery miles.

Great half, Badbark, and top work backing it up with 18 the next day . Mara PB beckons . . . . . .

7 on tired legs today gives 240 for March.

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

    Wicked skills, Badbark. Top bombing!

Great March total, Birch. Only 142 for me but that is my second highest ever. image.

Tried to do 6 miles at MP tis lunchtime but found a comfy zone again and averaged 7.10. Did MP up the hills and into the wind to get some quality in (and boy it was windy!).

Legs are desperate for tomorrow's sports massage but today was my best feeling run for a couple of weeks. When I was at 7.23 pace it felt easy. I imagined being in a pack just behind the 3.15 pacer and getting a windshield effect from the other runners. That helped me in the Surrey half and it will be my main tactic at Brighton. I'll follow the flag to 20 miles and see what happens from there.

G-Dawg. Only care point is with the innacuracy of pacers. In Paris last year I overtook 2 of the 3, 3 hour pacers but still finished in 3:03:30- don'r rely on them, they are human too.

Badbark that's a sensational time- you must be happy with that. You are a man on form...

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

Wise words OO. I did Paris in 2013. At one point I thought I was doing really well as I could see the pacer just up the street. Turns out he had a shocker. I did 3.23 that year and was nowhere near 3.15 pace going into the event, so no problem. My splits were very even. Just shows how bad the pacer was. Sacré bleu!

My Garmin and course knowledge from last year will also be used to gauge performance on the day.

  • March done, CNBA fairy came today so a massive 2 miles in the wind.

Total of 177.88 miles so 22:14:21 hours running at an average of 7:30 pace.

  • sscssc ✭✭✭

Lorenzo, re: trainers I would run in whatever is comfortable for you.  Learnt from own experience that a a lightweight shoe is best for me and my current ones are classed as racing flats.  Bought from a specialist shop with superb shop assistants - guy said they are no different to a bulky shoe providing your technique is appropriate for the way they work.  Lots of advice now saying buy / wear on comfort rather than a foot analysis as this is still unreliable for a lot of people.

Re: pacing.  Ran Brighton 2 years ago and started the row behind the 3:15 pacer, his first five miles were all run at 7.10 pace.  3:15 was right on the limit for me so this early surge killed me later on, would have been much better simply trusting my own pace and settled into the race on feel.

Didn't want blown of my feet today(75mph winds recorded in NIimage) and frequent hail showers and too tired after nightshift anyway so 276 miles for March for me ,was on track for about 310 till last week too..  slacker !!!!!!!!!!!!image

Badbark- that mara pb will probably have to go image

Pacers generally finish at the correct time but are usually far too fast out the blocks because its far too easy for them , it took me at least 6 miles to catch the 1:45 pacer in my half they were a long way ahead and I was running the correct pace.

  • Looks like the Consistently Consistent sub-3:15 team came second overall so I consider that a great performance: up from third last year. 2016 ...

    Hi all,

quickish post as not long in from work

PMJ your 2.2m beat my 1.78m on the treadmill last night image

Badbark - WoW great Half and follow up too, well done indeed

G-Dawg - Yes pacers can be an issue, tried many years ago when going for a 3:30, we started the first mile in congestion with a 9min mile then they decised to get it back as quick as they could, most of us were destroyed by 10m.

Been away all day today, so an enforced rest day

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭
Well done team! And well marshalled PMJ.

Looking good Badbark. Nearly cotton wool time.

Last day at work tomorrow. Then hols and a new job image Priorities for tomorrow are Manchester marathon entry, eating cake and drinking beer. In that order.
  • SJ - sounds like a good plan to me!

Well done TCCSTFT - fab performance.

242 miles for me in total for March - my biggest ever March.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Juggling runs around work today- 2 * 4 miles lunchtime and evening. The lunch session included 3* 1km's at 3:45 pace, chasing my young fast pal. I was surprised how comfortable it felt- a pleasing sign after the long run on Sunday.
