Back on track tonight after a heavily compromised running week last week.  My parents took us to Sun City for a few days and we did a few game drives where my wife is brilliant at spotting the animals. Back home last night but no time for a run. So 20km tonight at a decent easy pace although it was still 24C when I set off at 9pm.

We drove by the Parkrun course today and my 6yo son asked why I haven't taken him for a while. I told him it was because he doesn't run it all and walks some, so this weekend he tells me he will run it all.

Bike It - well done mate getting back on it. Sounds like you've had a nice break and good luck getting a 6 year old to keep up at park run!

Abbers / Gul - it's work although it is a welcome break from the frizzle gang madness. Gul hope you feel better soon.

GM - had a good conversation with colleagues from Jersey today or who have lived there at points, sounds like a great family oriented place. I'd love to live there.

PMJ - sorry you might have already said... Is that base mileage or are you campaigning yet?

Abbers - good to hear - no sign of lurgy developing here either.

That's solid mileage at this time of the year PMJ. You're building a firm foundation for a Spring marathon - is it London?

Odd, so after feeling tired on Tuesday it was with a bit of trepidation that I set out for my lunchtime 13 yesterday but 100 minutes later  it was done at 7:37 pace. Legs seemed to find a rhythm and I just let them roll over. 57.32 miles in 7 days which is too many for this time of year but nice to know I can do it.

The big goal is London 2016 and hopefully sub-3 there.  The loose plan is to come out of the summer and build up in steps, so I have a club race just short of 9 miles on Sunday and then the Tadley 10 miler a week later. St Neots half is mid November and then wind up to a 20 mile run before Christmas, then an attempt at the club V50 20 mile record (2:19:20) at Bramley 20 on Feb 14th and then the V50 marathon record (3:01.06) at London.

Don't you just loathe when bring out a new edition to a shoe that you have worn in the past and really liked and then they go about supposedly upgrading them, but completely butcher them?

I think I am that way with Nike Pegasus. I started wearing them 15 years or more ago and now they are a completely different shoe. Probably need to go to a shop and look at a new one.

Don't know what happend to my post th other day but t msised a bit off the end?

So, very well done on the Cardiff Half Jools and in conversational mode as well. Looking good now.

Congratulations on your 50 second 10kPB VTR. And more importantly dipping under that 40 minute barrier too.

Did a tasty 10 miler on Tuesday night @ 6.45 av pace so speed endurance is still there. No running now till at least Sunday as I had a “gentleman of a certain age medical procedure ” yesterday. Let's just say I hope I have the balls to run a marathon in just over 2 weeks timeimage

I note that even though Jools did Cardiff as a MP effort, she is ranked #5 in the runBritain 2015 Grand Prix

Short run tonight and came across a man who had built a little place of worship. A burning candle and 2 grass dolls - appeared to be worshiping some kind of voodoo

  • Options

Abbers, how are the legs feeling? Good I hope! And keep that cold bug away.

Gul, hope you are feeling better.

BI, glad to hear you found your mojo (but beware the voodoo).

KR, ouchimage. Nice fitness on display, even if you are a bit tender at the moment.

This week I took Monday off, and got easy runs of 8 and 5 Tues/Wed. Core was feeling cranky (a bit shredded really) on Tuesday but much better Wed. Today did 10M w/6 at 6:46 m/m. Core very good on this run (and after). Miles felt very comfy and had good energy on final 3 cool down miles. Really, really, reaaaaally hoping I can now heal up sufficiently to run the course without getting a muscle tear in the problem area. Other than a 13 mile run Sunday, all the rest are 7M or less and a total of 2M at MP left.  Long range weather forecast looking good. Hopefully it will be cool and calm.

BI's running adventures in SA continue to amuse and reveal the unexpected!

PMJ, I would have thought a man of your experience and talent, along with a sensible plan and realistic targets, would be able to tick off those goals one by one with a good degree of success.

Nice running from KR; hope you're not feeling too sore!

Similar sentiments for VTR, although it sounds like you're managing your issues OK. Legs feeling alright here, yesterday's 4.5 miles had a 2 mile tempo section in the middle that came out at 6:30m/m, significantly quicker than the same run on Tuesday, with what felt like the same effort. Very peculiar. I know it was too fast, but it was only 2 miles. Won't be looking for that pace on Sunday. More likely to follow the 1:30 pacer and then hopefully push on in the last 2 or 3 assuming all feels well. If not, then I shall be clinging on for dear life, as usual!

    Healing vibes to OO too.

PMJ - excellent MLR especially if you were feeling tired. Very impressive ranking for Jools!
KR - hope it doesn't take too long to recover from!
VTr - sounds promising - how long to go now? No lurgy has materialised here, thanks.
    OO - get well soon.
Overslept after a few late nights (late for me anyway) and so just did 4 miles this morning.

PMJ - I've worn Nike Pegasus since they first appeared in 1983 - my dad bought me a pair for my birthday! It was the start of a love affair, from which I've strayed a few times over the years - though always to return like an errant husband. I like the latest version. They make my old legs feel fleet and fast!

Fishy - Pegasus 83 a thing of beauty.

Jools - just browsing the results for the Great Scottish Run last weekend, your conversation paced 1:22 would have won it for the non elite females. Ooft.

Not to undermine Jools's race (my PB is not much faster and it was definitely NOT conversation paced!) but in case anyone thinks all the Scottish women are crap... it is because they relaxed the elite qualifying standards for women to sub 1:22 for the half. So some of the speedy-but-not-normally-elite women were in that category.

Leslie - presume you're on shift work again?!
8 miles here inc. parkrun. Started off sensibly today, so it was nice to overtake a few in the first mile or so (6:26). Around the 2nd mile the last person I had passed (1st woman) overtook me for a short while before I passed her for a second time (6:44?). Near the end I heard someone coming up behind me (turned out to be 1st woman again) but managed a final spurt and held them off for 7th place (0.98 miles / 6:30). Now I have always reckoned the course was short by 50-100m, but my GPS showed 2.98 miles total! Could mean a dodgy GPS and I'm not getting quite as slow as I thought. Unofficial time 19:41, so not displeased.
Oh, I have an apology to make. 1st woman finished 4th overall in 18:51. And I was 6th apparently with an official time of 19:42; same as my only other KL parkrun this year. Managed to sneak 1st old git though!

8 here also instead of usual Sat long outing, with an eye to first race of the local area XC league being tomorrow . . .

Plenty of good running over the last few days - encouraging parkrun from Gul.

Busy week for me, but still managed to get out every morning including an intervals session and an attempted HMP session (which ended up a bit slower than planned but hopefully just as a result of a few glasses of wine and the late finish the previous night).

Lie in this morning as I've got a XC League race this afternoon - gulp!

It's great to see plenty of  solid training runs banked by everyone and a good Parkrun performance by Gul.

The cross country season kicked off today and I had a good run in the Comber Cup. I finished the 5 miles in about 29:47 which is over a minute faster than on the same course last year.

It's the hilliest XC of the season and I ran by feel not looking at my Garmin until the final mile. I'm very happy to dip under 6 minute mile pace on a hilly course, especially considering I ran a 2:55 marathon 6 days ago.

Of course I'm still buzzing from Northern Ireland qualifying for the Euros! image

    Evening all,

Badbark - That's some running from you recently; was that you getting a mention on MarathonTalk this week, too?  Can't be many folk that've just completed 3x sub-3 marathons in six weeks!  Well done on the XC run too, very impressive.

Gul - Well done on the parkrun!

VTr & Jools - Congrats on your respective PBs, very tidy.  Though Jools, my 5k PB's very similar and I'm miles off your 10/HM paces...I like to think this means there's more to come from both of us image

GM - Enjoyed your Jersey report, good going.  Any scope for returning the dodgy shoes you bought?

PJF - We meet again! I'm not stalking you, honest.  Read your Berlin report; great stuff!

Abbers - Good luck with the HM!

Hello again everyone; I hope you're okay with gatecrashers...I intend to stick around.  A quick history: ran my first 10k four years ago and my first marathon last year; PB currently 3:20:54 from this year's Berlin which I ran in a similar fashion (but slower!) to PJF.  This makes me think there's more to come.  Set my HM PB a week later - last week - at the GSR in 1:27:24, which made me quite happy.

You lot are all super quick in comparison, so I've got some work to do!  Next marathon target's Brighton in April, so it's good to read GD's had success there.  Congrats on the job front, too, incidentally.  Quite a crazy month, that...

Birch / Lorenzo - looking forward to hearing how the XC went.
Badbark - that's another impressive performance.
OO - good parkrunning. Hope you've recovered enough to not suffer too much on the long run today.
Meadower - sounds like you're making steady progress. Please do stick around - always good to have some new blood.
4 recovery miles d&d this morning.

Just to reassure you, Gul is not advocating doping to improve your performance! image

Hope your cold clears up by today OO.

More great stuff from Madbark - that's pretty speedy for a XC.

Gul - my XC wasn't too bad, although it confirmed my view that while I enjoy trail running, I'm definitely not a XC specialist. Very pleasant course around Wimbledon Common although I was hoping for a bit more mud! 32 mins for 7.5K meant sub 7min/miles so pretty happy with that.

Followed that with a 14 miler this morning - it felt a bit ploddy but assuming the distance logged was correct, the pace turned out OK.

55 miles for the week all in all.

As an aside, if anyone gets a chance to see the film "11 minutes" (don't worry - it lasts longer than that!), it's well worth it. I'm not a big cinema goer, but Mrs L and I decided to head up to town last night and it was showing as part of the London Film Festival. Polish with English subtitles, and superbly put together.

Lorenzo - Just to reassure you, Gul is not advocating doping to improve your performance! This is just hilarious! Well done on the XC that's not bad going at all. I am tempted to do a few this year myself. Good weekly mileage too.

Meadower - Welcomeand well done on your marathon in Berlin, a pb is always nice and your recent half time suggests that with a good campaign behind you, you could shave off a decent chunk in your next marathon. What races have you got lined up? I did send my shoes back, I wore them for two 19 mile runs in the build up to my recent marathon and managed to sweet talk the online retailers into exchanging them for something else. Got a pair of Haglofs comp II trail shoes instead and although they are not really for the road I do like trail running and there are plenty of nice routes here in Jersey.

Hope Abbers had a good run today. Did a lovely 15k run with a friend who is training for the half. Ran the 1st 7.5k of the course which has hills from 2k to 7.5k and turned around and headed back down. My friend is pretty new to running and she ran 10 seconds per k quicker than we planned so she was delighted and said she felt strong. Pace was around 8:30mm which was just what I needed to get back running again. No issues whatsoever after last week's marathon and I'll do a relatively easy week next week and then plan on running up loads of hills and trying to get some speed back into the legs. It's practically another 4 week plan for a race but hopefully the endurance from the marathon topped up with those sessions will get me what I want.

    eyup, Meadower
Gerard - good outing with chum - always a treat to run with good company  . . .
    Badbark & Lorenzo - good XC - and well backed up, Lorenzo, with a 14  . . .

XC for me also today - was 60 last year, but missed the series, so a year on was making my VoGit debut  . . .
4 laps of 2K (1st of series always 8K, subsequent races around 6miles/10K) - undulating parkland, hardly any flat, so seemed pretty relentless. Downhill start, so went off quite quickly, then tried to settle to a rhythm as the field sorted itself out. The lap finished with a short, sharp climb towards the finish run-in, which itself was an uphill gradient (reverse of start) . On second lap, at a convenient bend, I took the opportunity to note a couple of clubmates behind, which gave me an incentive to keep pushing, even on the downhills, where I may have been tempted to coast a bit. Then spotted a chap ahead who looked like a fellow VoGit (although one can never be certain), and eventually, after some nip & tuck, I managed to pass and get a gap on him on lap3, which I was to maintain to the end. The 3rd lap was the hardest mentally, as I was driving on in the hope of keeping this fellow at bay, but with the knowledge there was another lap left!  Was thinking that I couldn't possibly do another 3 of these races to complete the series  . . .
Anyway onto lap4 & I just gave it what was left and came home in 35:55 ish for the 8K, so was pleased enough with that - (looked in my records and saw 4 years ago on same course I bagged 36:18, so a bit quicker today).
Will have to await the results later in the week to see what position in V60 category, but the standard is usually pretty decent.

All in all, happy with my return to XC after 3 years absence, but it's just as hard as it ever was !

Good running for an old guy Birch, recovery runs for the next 7 days.. Ha ha!

GM - once again, showing the love for this sport, the way it should be, and result on the shoe swap.

Gul - just how much difference does it actually make, are you talking marginal or step gains?

Lorenzo - good mileage this week, distance, speed and multi terrain!

OO - 18:48 is excellent under the weather

Literatin - you popped up like a genie there, no offence meant by the observation that Jools would have won the GSR!

Leslie - have you anything on the horizon to keep you focussed?

Meadower - hola... Have you opted against Paris?

just getting back into the swing of it now after an easy couple of weeks. 6m today 40mins with 500 ft of climb. But the highlight was my daughters park run debut she finished 5th in the 11-15 group with 28mins, she's 12 And seems to like it. On the flip side my boys just dismembered a queen bee as part of some wierd experiment, words will be had.
