  • You cycled UP THE KIRKSTONE? Respect, that's a long haul.  Is the old pub at the top of the pass still open for a shifter?  C'mon down to Manc - you know you want to.

  • Yep, but not the toughest climb locally - loooong drag but manageable even with my 36/25 gearing. Pub is still there but I hit the summit at about 9am so a bit early even for me Poacher! Would love to do manc but head is in charge right now - although I am in the mid 20s for mileage this week: legend!
  • Well done, Poacher!

Ended up working late on Thursday so had to do 13M solo rather than club session; 5 with strides on Friday (after a rather too exciting day: electrical fire in my work office block means we are currently homeless!); 15M yesterday and 18M today to bring up 67M for the week.

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

Great work Poacher, and impressive weekend miles, Jools.

Good fortitude by GD on massage-battered legs.

7 here - legs felt so stiff and cumbersome - maybe the time on feet spectating at National XC y'day took its toll. Anyway, 34 for week, 76 for the fortnight whilst awaiting knee improvement. All slow/steady. Can't run with intensity yet.

  • I have a question for the thread, does anyone ever feel the need for a nap after they have done a run of 20 miles plus? Last week when I ran my 1st 22 I felt great afterwards and later that afternoon I felt the need for a sleep and today more so, as I had a terrible sleep the night before.

G-Dawg – Been there myself with the sports massage thing as a first timer and it ruined my first ever marathon which was London 2013, iirc I had one 4 days out, schoolboy error! My muscles went from feeling like concrete to Jelly and I was unable to walk the day before the marathon. Lesson learned there for me, but I do believe they help but the timeframe is key as well as getting used to them. Well done on getting your run done.

Lorenzo – Indeed it has been and generally is, but in many ways I quite like that. The more time I get to spend with my son the bond grows stronger and I want tha,t so all good. I'm glad you're getting on with your new shoes. I've never run in Mizunos before. Your cutback week looks like my biggest week that I haven’t had yet!

Bike it – Yes, it certainly has, but like most of Africa it’s extreme and doesn’t correlate with salaries, cost of living etc, etc.... Good to see you back doing a long run.

Poacher – Well done today, sub 7mm is for 13.1 is not hanging around, plus much better than you expected, 6 weeks to go and still time to get in shape for a very tidy marathon time, me thinks? Have you got capacity for a few LSR’s runs before then? I watched the comrades last year online and I was quite taken aback by CW the Postwoman.image Incredible story altogether and to run that sort of time with her strategy too. Hats and everything else off to her.

SJ – Sounds like you are really enjoying the training at the mo and as you say big mileage on the feet from you! Ah come down and say hi. Congrats on the cup win today. I’m a ManU fan, but I was cheering for you guys today!

OO – Great parkrun time from your good self again. Nice long run/time on the legs and a lovely round 60 for the week.

Jools – 51 miles in 4 days is good going.

Birch – Hopefully the knee starts behaving soon, well done on being patient. How did Junior Birch get on?

I Had a very busy day with my boy on Saturday as he was at swimming academy early doors and then played in a football tournament for the rest of the morning into the early afternoon, so no running for me on Sat but today I met my friend who is also doing Manc and we are travelling together, we did 22 miles this morning. The wind was hideous and we had to run a route which meant about 6 miles of hills and about 10 miles full on headwind. We averaged 9:02mm pace, so about 3:18 time on feet. It felt like we were walking in parts, my friend has a 3:42 pb & she found it hard but I was glad we did that. Good time on the feet and all and I’m sure it will benefit both of us in this campaign. I'm delighted with my first ever back to back 20+ mile runs (i.e. consecutive weeks in a marathon campaign) and I'm still in one piece and the Boston boosts were amazing. I now need to go and buy a 2nd pair as finding a good shoe for long runs is like the Holy Grail for me. image

  • Hi All

i am doing the MK marathon on the 2nd May.

need to get my gfa back so aiming for under 3.15.  Doing the p&d 55 to 70 plan with 67 miles last week, finishing with a 16 miler with 12 at marathon pace.  (Actually most of the 12 were faster than target pace.)

  • Great result Poacher image

So the Tarpley 20 yesterday didn't go exactly as planned, but I can't be disappointed.  In fact the first two sections (7 @ 8.20s and 7 @ 7.50s were pretty much spot on), but then the final 6 was into a very strong headwind and I knew I couldn't get anywhere near a 7.20 let alone 6 of them.  So just concentrated on effort and trying to keep a good cadence.  I gave up clicking my watch on the mile markers so haven't worked out what my average pace was for that final section, but came in with a 2.38, some way off last year's time but happy with it in the conditions.  I actually felt really strong throughout, and in fact after those first 7 miles wasn't passed by anyone at all, and did pass a lot of people suffering towards the end.  Found out this morning I was first F45 as well, so really can't complain image

  • PMJ - Monday to Sunday. Sunday to Saturday would have given me 68 for the week!
Speedy - sorry to hear your training is suffering.
Poacher - maybe if you had to run it backwards that would make it more interesting!
VTr - hope the workload eases up sooner that you think.
GM - "Do you know why the Spring Shakespeare is being run in the opposite direction this year?" Desperation? Nice long run. If it's a Saturday I usually go back to bed after mine!
Lorenzo - nice going for a cut-back week!
GD - lesson learnt the hard way!
    Bike It - nice one!
OO - great parkrun and long run.
Poacher - excellent racing. I am worried. Couldn't you slip in another marathon between VLM and White Peakimage
SJ - very impressive weekend of training.
    Jools - great miles.
Birch - how did the Nationals go?
Surrey Runner - welcome to the thread. Well done on the 16 with 12 @ MP - that's a really tough one, so sounds like you should be on course for your sub 3:15.
Freemers - well done on a great effort and 1st F45 placing at Tarpley.
6 slow miles for me this morning to bring up 239 for February. Just going to take it really easy this week.

  • Freemers - sounds like the conditions weren't ideal. Congrats on the 1st F45 award.

Poacher - feels like you're in reasonable shape. Where are you going to be during March?

Surrey Runner - welcome. Whereabouts in Surrey are you?

GM - another good long run there. Time on feet is never a bad thing. I don't often have a sleep after a long run, but if I've had to get up early to squeeze it in, then I sometimes succumb to the temptation. I suspect that it was the impact of the poor night's sleep the night before, rather than the long run itself that meant you wanted a quick kip.

Finished February off with a 11.5 miler this morning taking me up to 244 for the month - just wanted to get those extra miles in to beat Gulimage

  • Well done, Freemers.  I'm really hoping after all this windy weather we've had that it'll be still come marathon day, and then we'll all fly along effortlessly, if not a little perplexed at the lack of resistance!

GM: sometimes I do feel quite tired after a long run, usually if I've had a fuelling issue.  I know I'm getting fitter and race ready when this doesn't happen!  There's a 22M lurking in my schedule for Sunday, so I'll see how I get onimage

  • Odd end to the week for me. Saturday did parkrun and ended up with 20:07 which echoed the 5k I did on Tuesday. Still down on my usual times but I had been stuck in the 20.3x for a while so nice to get an improvement of any kind, Then Sunday went for a slow 16 up and back down the Thames and pace came out at 8:10. Did the same route back in December and was upset with 7:58 pace. I guess the takeaway is you can't nail every run. I was happy with 3 runs last week (two fast 5ks and a 14 miler at 7:10), maybe 3 is as many as I can expect.

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

good strong 20, Freemers - bodes well - and nice age-group victory !

Gerard - 3:18 is a great time-on-feet run; good that the shoes were comfy - I mention shoes as just went online shopping to find my intended purchase sold out, but hardly surprising, as they offered "hotmelt overlays", "clutch counter", & "guidance line" - . . . . . . . I'll just have to soldier along without !

to those kind enough to ask - my son bagged 321st (from 1730 finishers), at the National XC, so within the top 19% - last year was in the 370's, so a bit of an improvement. His ex-housemate (who is making his marathon debut at Manchester) was 21st .

Only 109 for the month here(due to the knee issue), with today's run yet to be done.

  • Feb done, 241.51 miles at an average pace of 7:52. Over 450 for the year already.

On the Izzard thing, the issue is akin to the sorites paradox. You start by defining an acceptable time is to cover 26.2 miles (so let's say 3:15 is an acceptable time), and then another which is unacceptable (so let's plump for 12 hours) to have the same term applied. You then try and find the exact point at which it flips from being acceptable to unacceptable and you can't do it.

Comrades is so much easier, 11:59:59 and you have completed Comrades, 12:00:01 and you have not. Black and white.

  • GM: I often have a nap after an LSR as I normally get up at 4am to do it.  Good 22 - that nice slow place will do you good.

Good 20 Freemers.  I've often found it difficult to hit planned paces like that whilst in the midst of training when fatigue is high.  It will all be very achievable after a taper and in better conditions.

Good Point PMJ.  Pretty much all races here have cut-off's, e.g. this weekend's marathon has a 5:45 cut-off which is fairly standard.  I think the longest is 6 hours in SA.  After that everything is packed away and you didn't finish.  I do wonder how far I would get if I tried it - probably less than 10 I think.

A little over 200 miles here for the month.  It sounds OK on the face of it, but a bit less quality than I had intended.  The target for March will be 250+miles and starting the 20+ mile LSRs, keeping on with the treadmill hill sessions and speed sessions.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Well done Poacher and Freemers, good positives from both of your races. My 20 mile race is in 2 weeks- anyone else got one coming up?

Why are you taking it easy Gul, is it a cut back week for you?

Congrats on the double 20 Gerard, I'm sure it is giving you confidence. I might try the same this week.

I only managed 216 for Feb, but like you Bike it, I hope to increase a bit this month. Been taking your advice Freemers and not worrying if some of the longer runs are at an easy pace.

  • OO53, I'm thinking of doing a 20 mile race on March 13th to get some idea of pace for London.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Agree PMJ, the 20 mile race is the best indicator of form and marathon prospects. I'll probably aim for 6:45 pace and ease back if that feels too tough.

  • Yay Freemers! Winner of the week!! Hope you got a massive trophy or maybe a voucher.

Well done PMJ on both impressive mileage and on injecting an interesting paradox.

Impressive mileage from others too. Volumes are building nicely.

7.5 tonight for me image and yes GM - I'm loving it!
  • Birch - That's impressive by junior, well done to him and his housemate must be seriously good with that finish, do you know what he is targeting for the marathon? Haha, those shoes sound amazing! I remember you mentioned a while back that you were having a glass of shiraz (nice choice of grape) and listening to John Martyn. He's one of my all time favourites. I met him many years ago in Dublin after a gig and he was well known for his fondness of a sup or two, so we got chatting and I offered him a drink but he was off the booze, that went down like a ton of bricks! It was a great gig though and a buddy of mine and JM got chatting about Nick Drake. Solid air is a masterpiece imho.

PMJ - Yep that sounds like a fair amount of pacey runs packed into one week. My legs would not be happy if I tried that.

Bike it - Nice target for March.

OO - Go on, you know you want to. image When is your 20 mile race?

SJ - Happy days. Are you looking forward to having Pep at the helm? It will be interesting to see what players you sign once he takes over. Feel a bit sorry for Pellegrini though. I quite like the chap. Well done on the 7.5 for you tonight. I thought LVG was very entertaining y'day with his sideline antics.

Freemers - Well done on your 20 mile race and 1st prize to boot! It's not something I've ever managed.

Surrey Runner - Welcome on board. Nice 16 and 12 faster than MP is good going.

Jools - 22's are all the rage here.image I may attempt a hat trick this Sunday.image

    Lorenzo - Nice monthly total!

Phew I thought it was just me feeling like that after the really long runs. I guess 3:18 for time on my feet is probably near my MP so it's bound to have an effect on my energy reserves but Lorenzo you are probably right, 4 hours sleep before a 22 miler is not ideal.

I resisted the temptation to run after work as I was late home after a very busy day and I thought it best to reward my pins with a day off. I'm hoping for a least 55 miles this week. That's near enough the top end for me and it will be interesting to see how the body copes. I am tempted to give the parkrun a crack this w/end as I am free. Will see what the weather is doing before I decide. I feel like my face is about to peel off after that hideous wind yesterday. image

Gerard - nice story re JM -

not sure what my son's mate is aiming for - he's being (wisely) circumspect, as it's his debut at the distance, but his half times suggest 2:30 should reasonable target, but there's the unpredictability factor that comes with the first attempt.

got 11 in this afternoon, to finish the month on 120. Oddly, my legs felt a lot better than during Sat's 8 and Sun's 7 . . . . .

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭
Welcome Surrey Runner! Sounds like you are well on track. Have you done MK before?

    2:30 Birch! Wow....

GM, yes Pep will spice things up, especially if Jose goes to United - should re inject a bit of venom into the Derby! There'll be a bit of a midfield clear out in the summer so would be nice to see Pogba come in and maybe Neymar to add a bit to the attack (we can sit him on the bench for emergencies!)image

Have started with a really sore throat (kept waking me up). No fair!
  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭

Nice work from Birch jnr - but will he still be running when he is a VOG?

GM - some of us feel like a kip during a long run, let alone after it. I once stopped for a sit-down tea & cake session half way through a tough mara image - still came in 7th (but it was a small field).

Nice podium Freemers, they all count.

Nice animal husbandry Bike It. Your miles are excellent but will need a decent taper come May. This is the really hard part of the year when determination to nail the training is key.

Gul - I will schedule a Madbark-style 100k tempo run the day before WP - OK?

Lorenzo you get to run in all the glamorous places.  Do you have plans for a fast HM or 20 before London to see whether sub3 is on the cards?

147m here for Feb, not too bad having lost a week to travel and a cold.

  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

Lorenzo - good miles. I must try harder in March!
Birch - good result for your son. His friend is rather fast!
PMJ - some good sessions there. And I love a good paradox.
Bike It - sounds like a decent plan.
OO - yes, cut-back week for me. Given my record for injuries in marathon training, I've decided to do 2 hard weeks / 1 cut-back week.
GM - quite fancy a parkrun myself - it's been quite a while.
SJ - hope the sore throat is sent packing quickly.
    Poacher - go for it!
Another 7 slow miles this morning.

  • AbbersAbbers ✭✭✭

Must make an effort to look in on the thread over the weekend; trying to catch up early in the week is next to impossible!

Some great work being put in, congrats to Freemers on the age group win, and welcome to Surrey Runner.

Hope those with sore throats, other germs and niggles improve quickly.

13 early Saturday for me, but ran out of time on Sunday due to a combination of family duties and decorating, which was all a bit annoying. 6.5 easy yesterday. Salisbury looming in 12 days!

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

I will cut back next week Gul. I have a business trip mid week then my 20 mile race Sunday week (your question Gerard). Hopefully 55+ is on for me too this week.

Gentle 8 miler today felt OK

    Is Salisbury a 1/2M Abbers?

  • FreemersFreemers ✭✭✭

    Welcome to Surrey Runner image.

I am working at home today, and looking out of my study window the sun is shining and it looks like a nice afternoon for a run.  Pity I went this morning when it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale image. 8 miles steady pace.

  • AbbersAbbers ✭✭✭

OO - Salisbury is an undulating 10 miler. Slightly odd distance, but we seem to specialise in them down here as we have the Lordshill 10 miles (near Southampton) in November too, which I know TR (sometimes of this parish) has run a number of times. They're both part of the Hants Road Race League, so attract a lot of speedy club runners. 30 went under the hour at Salisbury last year, and 80-odd below 65 mins, Where is work taking you to this week?

Another 6.5 at lunch today, but at a steady pace this time, something in the 7:3x m/m range. Just about left it late enough to avoid Freemers' rain! Mind you, there was a power cut when I got back to the gym, which meant an invigorating cold shower!

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

Freemers - nice win image just run again to get out in the nice weather !

    Poacher- good half time

Gul -sounds like a sensible strategy

Feb stats- 69 miles and only 2 weeks sick this month image started back with an easy 3 today.

Have you done the Salisbury 54321 Abbers? Hills, ancient hill fort, a cathedral and the best race instruction ever - 'follow the string through the yew tree wood'. A very good morning out.

Sounds like a good day for a double Freemers

I got new shoes already for Comrades Poacher and they are my regular ASICS - just a fresh pair. The plan is around 250 miles in March, 280+ miles in April by doing around 60 -70 mile weeks from mid March. Then taper and do around 150 in May before Comrades.

12 miles this morning on the long way to work and 4 miles this evening on the way home. With yesterday's 8 that gives me Sunday's marathon to hit 50 miles for the week. Debating whether to do something like 6x600 tomorrow or Thursday as a bit of a speed or just run easy and rest Friday/Saturday. What do you think?
  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭

+1 for the Salisbury 54321, although a tough day out if it's hot.

Liking that plan Bike It. Which pen are you aiming for?

Nice comeback on the way Leslie

Gul, seriously though, take it carefully and make sure you get to the start line in one piece to enjoy the day out in the countryside.
