  • 20:03 for me yesterday at parkrun puts me a second behind Leslie, miles behind OO53 and a snidge ahead of Jools. Another 8 today for a week of 42 so the 40 average is ticking along nicely.

Pacing 1:45 at Maidenhead half in a few week's time, 8:00.57 pace so will lump for 8 on the nose and come home 7.5 seconds early!

  • PMJ - none too shabby park running despite all the travelling.

OO and Leslie - good park running. My lad is only 3, but competitive (not sure that's from me?), going to take him to 'Beverley Bolt' next weekend, which I heard about today. Track set out for the kids in a pedestrianised street in the town centre and different length runs depending on age. He'd be mixing it with up to 6yo's over 30metres, but he'll love that.

Cracking mileage joolska and good parkrun, tough to pace hills right, saw all kinds of approaches at the 10m I did last weekend, many blew their race at 4m I reckon.

23m for me at about 8:02 pace, bit fast but the course was a long straight cinder/easy trail track along old railway route from Hull to Hornsea (the coast) and back. mostly pancake flat. Effort felt easy enough and only found the last few miles a bit tough and think that was just some stiffening and a lull rather than bonk/wall as felt I could have accelerated if needed. Good longest LSR. 4weeks to go!

  • Leslie - good 5K time there.  Is 11 the lower limit or do they just have to be accompanied if they're under 11?

Presume you were doing Ashton Gate Jools? Good stuff given how hilly it is if it was.

Impressive long runs from Leslie, DEOT and OO.

About 5 miles for me first thing today running into the Rugova mountains from Peje.

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭

Yep, the mighty Ashton Court Hill.  Love it really!

  • Great news GD! Enjoy your hols too image Rome is lovely, my top tip, don't drive a hired minibus round the city for 4 hrs getting hopelessly lost.

Poacher, both seem like good choices. If you are looking for relaxed riding then go for the defy; if you want something a bit more aggressive and rapid then go for Planet X - horses for courses but only marginal edging either way for each I think.

Currently on hols here too on a tour of Vietnam and Cambodia. Loved Hanoi with "crossing the road" seemingly the local sport and hen a cruise round Ha Long bay - even had a swim then a flight across to Siem Reap to visit the Angkor temples (amazing) and now in lovely beach hotel on an island off the coast. Too hot to run in any place we've been but this spot has a 30m pool so I've been bashing out the lengths to try to off set the 2000calorie breakfasts. Off to Sweden in less than a fortnight for OtillO!

Cheers SJ/GD/Lorenzo.  Too busy to buy a steed this week and it looks like it's back to #gymfail land soon image . But definitely thinking long term about 2 wheels. Supplementary question: how does the panel feel about disc vs. more conventional brakes? Got discs on the tank (MTB) and they do feel good.

Nice stuff Joolska on a hard course, and impressive miles.

Nice hols Lorenzo! Very enterprising place to go. How easy is it to get around?

SJ please post a pic of what a 2000 cal breakfast looks like. imageimageimage spent a lot of time in various parts of south Asia where the food is so good that there's a real danger of ending up the size of an elephant.

    Jools nice big week

Pmj- nice parkrun enjoy the pacing.

Slokey- enjoy burning those killer breakfasts off

Lorenzo- not sure ,11 years is just going by results ,can;t say I've seen any younger ones there, we don't have junior parkrun at my local parkrun and 5k is far too much for now for her.

DE- that's a proper long run and good pace too.

Poacher -looking forward to the stories in the gym

    5 very easy ones.

  • Poacher, breakfast update this morning:

Drinks - Tea X 2, Orange Juice, 2 glasses of "champagne"

    Fruit course- Pineapple, Melon, Apple

Next course - sweet and sour squid, tuna and potato salad, prawn dumplings

Next course - sushi rolls and smoked seabass

Next course - 3 fried eggs, baked beans, potato wedges

Cake course - croissant plus raspberry jam, bread and butter pudding, lemon cake, chocolate muffin, pain au raisin

    Nom nom nom
  • Good effort on the breakfast SJ - not sure about squid and sushi first thing in the day though! Definitely for lunch and dinner,  but I think I'll stick to fruit for breakfast. Glad you're enjoying Cambodia.  We had a brilliant time there a few years ago.

Poacher - I've got disc brakes on the new bike. Difficult to tell if it makes a difference but there seems to be a logic in having them.

In answer to your question about Kosovo, we've got a hire car out here and it's very easy to get around,  with the usual caveats about signage and other road users.  It's sometimes tricky to tell which side of the road you're supposed to be driving on and the bike helmet and lights market doesn't seem to have taken off yet.  Reminds me very much of when we were in Turkey at the start of the 1990s - super friendly people, great food and a developing infrastructure.  Certainly doesn't feel like a country that was torn apart by civil war 15 years ago.

Running doesn't seem to be a big thing out here,  but the judoka (is that the word?) who won a gold medal in Rio is on posters all over the place.

In a nutshell, well worth a visit.

Just under 5 miles this morning for me - hoping to get some more mountain miles in when we had over the border into Albania for a few days.

  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭

SJ I hope your bikes have a very strong seat post. That is the breakfast of champions.  Although probably champions in weightlifting or sumo rather than tri.

Interesting stuff Lorenzo - Albania will be an experience.

Hello everyone, sorry I've been out of touch for a while but I have been travelling on and off for the past few months and routine is out the window. Apart from a few work trips to our neighbours in Guernsey that's it for travelling until December. Heading to Paris for Xmas and looking forward to it. Not much has changed on here, nice to see all running still and some returning to form as well. Congrats on the new job G-Dawg!

I got my MRI results back re the issue I had pre and post Manchester and they were inconclusive. Nothing sinister showed up but I still wasn't feeling good at all and was then referred to another specialist. Any how's I've been feeling better the past 3 weeks or so and have been doing a bit of jogging. I decided to test my level of unfitness and run an 8k race, my 1st one since Manchester and boy was it horrible. Uggh, I wanted to quit halfway but stuck to the task and finished it after getting lost on the last lap, I was daydreaming and just drifted off the route until a competitor who I know called out to me. Pace was a slow 6:40 average but it certainly shocked my body back into action and it was my 1st local race for about 6 months and it was good to see some familiar faces. I am running about 4 times a week now with very little intensity and will do that for another few weeks and see where I am, but it sure is good to be back. image

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

Slokey- is that an all day breakfast image, best put another few psi in those tyres image

    Lorenzo- enjoy Albania.

Gerard- good to see you are on the mend image, easy does it till you get used to it again.

    3 x 1 mile with 400m very slow jog recoveries .

    6:06, 6:09, 6:11 were the splits, Max hr 185 average 157.

Little bit of fade on very tired legs the track had a big puddle ( was raining non stop)  but I think I took most of it home on the backs of my legs and shoes image

  • Great news that you are back running GM image

Beer and pizza for lunch followed by a swim and a jaunt into the local traffic on one of the hotel's bikes - good fun but got a bit overheated

    Vietnamese restaurant tonight!
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

Good to see GM running again and some good holiday efforts going on with others.

As for me, nothing! image Have walked miles in Rome and had a good leg test going to the top of St Peter's Basilica today.

Woke up in the middle of the night last night due to the chandelier in the room sounding like a wind chime and moving around for no apparent reason. It did it again a little while later, I was still awake and felt the bed move. I then had an idea it was an earthquake. Turns out it was the 6.2 magnitude that's devastated Amatrice. Terrible for those guys, horrible scenes on the news, heart goes out to them.

Back tomorrow and some miles to run on Friday after 4 day's, sort of, rest.

    GD

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

    Slokey- enjoy the food

G-dawg- lucky to be far enough away from that earthquake.

rest yesterday and a smaller session today of  2 x 1 mile  with 400m slow recovery splits 6:30 and 6:31 m/mile. On the ramp down !

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Welcome back GerardM. Its hard to get back but just hang in there. You'll feel great when you start improving again, butbest tske it easy for now.

Quiet week here too. Local parkrun is closed so tourism to Druridge Bay parkrun tomorrow. 2 weeks until the GNR

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
Still in quiet holiday mode on here!

    Welcome back, GM.

Busy few days for the legs: Thurs was 15, yesterday 10 and today 11 with Cambridge parkrun in the middle. A mediocre 19.24, but I'm blaming last night's booze and the fact that whilst it may be pancake flat, it's really twisty and on trails. Delighted to have stayed upright!
  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭
Cheers all for the welcome back and I'm so pleased to be running again. Have been doing some training runs this week and it's so nice to be out in the sunshine. I'm going to take it easy for a few weeks and see how I feel then.

G-Dawg - scary stuff being relatively close to the earthquake.

Jools - Decent park run time today given you were boozing and some nice mileage too. I bumped into Francesca at our local park run this morning. I see she got hitched recently and did a half Ironman in Hawaii on her honeymoon with her hubby. That's impressive.

SJ - Sounds like you're enjoying yourself. Impressive calorie intake by you.

OO - How are you feeling about the GNR? Any target your aiming for?

Got to dash but will have a proper catch up later.
  • The end to my holiday is not going to plan. Left our hotel 26hrs ago and still not left the country - now looks like another 24 hrs still to go, urghhhh
  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

Leslie - nice mile reps and a cracking tempo run. Nice 5k too. And more mile reps!
GD - lunchtime mile reps! Whatever next? MLR of course! Congrats on the new job. Have a great time in Rome.
Lorenzo - good royal flush and bike commuting. Did you bike or fly to Kosovo? Nice hill running.
OO - sounds like a lovely 14 miler. Nice parkrun in the wind. Sounds like the whole family will be out there soon! Good to get a 20 miler in the bag whatever the pace.
PMJ - glad you had a good week in Lyon. Good steady mileage.
Jools - good running - building up nicely.
DEot - excellent 23 miler. Taper soon!
SJ - sounds like you were having a great holiday (not to mention the breakfast!) Hope you're on the move soon.
GM - good to hear from you. Take care now.
Great holiday in Pembrokeshire.  Had a cold and high temperature so missed a few opportunities for running, but still managed to get 30-odd miles in. Certainly lots of hills here! Got back yesterday, so another couple of days before it's back to work.

  • All a bit quiet on here at the moment.

Good to see Jools managing an alcohol-fuelled sub-20.

Welcome back GM - missed you on here.

Hope you get back OK SJ - what happened?

Glad you weren't in the quake zone GD - it does make you think how powerful this planet of ours is.

Gul - decided to take the airborne route to Kosovo although I suspect it would have been an interesting bike ride. Back to Pristina via the very attractive town of Prizren and we've spontaneously decided to head down to Skopje in Macedonia for a couple of days as it's only 2 hours on the bus.  May even head out for a run first thing tomorrow.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Uneventful running week here but managed to scrape 50 miles. Somehow managed to  put on a few pounds which is distressing 2 weeks out from the GNR. Parkrun was a steady 18:45 and today was 18 at a very slow 8:37 average.

I've invested £200+ in a new Forerunner 235. It's a bit high tech for me but great to have heart rate data without a chest strap and once I sync it with Strava I'll be all set. Fortunately junior OO is here to show me how to use the thing.

I'm aiming for about 1:23 at the GNR Gerard, not sure if that realistic but I'll be disappointed if I'm not well below 1:25 by a minute or so

Hope you are feeling better Gul.

  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

Lorenzo - you are certainly going places! Enjoy yourself.
OO - hope you can find your form for GNR - a mini-taper might help.
I was hoping to get a decent long run in this morning, but didn't get out until 4:36. So just 14 miles @ 8:06 m/m HR 145 (still slightly elevated from this cold).

  • Good to see you had a lie in this morning Gul!! Hope you're back to 100% soon.

1:23 would be impressive OO. What's your GNR PB?

4.5 miles along the banks of the Vardar river this morning.

  • Got back in one piece Lorenzo. Bad weather delayed our flight from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh and the flight back to the UK didn't wait for the 14 of us who were hoping to catch it

Airline bundled us into a taxi at 3 in the morning to a local gulag for a bit of sleep and we had another crack the following night. Ended up going via Paris.

Total time 51hrs back home at 4pm last night. Enjoy your jaunt!

Up early this morning for a 7am swim run training session in Coniston Water - beautiful
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

Sounds lovely,l SJ. I love it up there.

I hope you wore all black Lorenzo, upon your return you could have claimed you are Darth Vardar.image.

Got back from Rome at 2.00am Friday morning, got some sleep and went on a 10 miler to break the 4 days of rest. Came out at 7.21 pace.
Found myself doing a 10 miler again on Saturday, this time at 7.20 pace. Achilles grumbled a bit on Sunday, so rested it.

Just back from a 12 miler at 7.12 pace. Don't know why but I just felt strong. Achilles pain was there but seemed to ease off in the final 4 miles which were all sub-7. Icing it now.

Had to get a medium length run in today as I have a 22 miler planned for Saturday, my longest run of the Berlin campaign and I want to be fresh for it. Will have 2 rest days to make sure Achilles is in good shape.

track session tomorrow, some sort of 5 on Wednesday, LSR Saturday and a recovery on Sunday and then it's taper time. Crucial week...plus I start my new job tomorrow! image

    Nice looooooong journey for SJ

GD how was Rome?  Built on 7 hills so one would you you got some reps in

After several months it's the return of #gymfails:
    1) bloke in neat chinos and ironed white shirt walks on treadie at 4.5kph for 90 minutes.  Mind numbing enough, but he spent the 90min watching an action movie in which Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who was dubbed into Arabic, killed literally everyone he met. image

    2) Women in jeans and court shoes gets on treadie, fires it up quite fast, starts whatsapping, realises she is going to be hurled backwards into a concrete wall at any moment, so gives up and leaves the gym after less than 1 minute of exercise.

Good to be back, sort of.

Evening folks. I'm really struggling to come to terms with the fact it's almost September. Only seems like a few weeks ago when summer started but with 4 trips off Island and my Mum visiting here it's been a busy summer of onshore/offshore activity.

Deot - Well done on your recent 10 miler, that's a solid pace to hold over the distance. I've never actually raced one as there is only one "10 mile" race here in Jersey where I'm based and it's only 9.7 miles!

Leslie - Just reading back I can see you are knocking out some decent speed sessions. Those mile reps are sharp. Have you got an A race lined up?

Lorenzo - Thanks man. I'm intrigued by your choice of holiday destinations. I recall your culinary posts from around the world, what's the food like over there? Have you got an Autumn marathon lined up?

Gul - Sorry to hear you were ill whilst on holiday. Same thing happened to me when I was home recently. Caught a cold or something and felt below par for about 4 days. Still putting the rest of to shame with your middle of the night runs.image

OO - 1:23 is a very good target and I'm sure you'll get that if not better. Hopefully the conditions will be favorable on the day. Enjoy your new gadget.

Poacher - Loving your gymfail tales.image

SJ - That was a lonnnng journey home and nice to see you up and out enjoying the swim in the lake.

G-Dawg - Berlin is close now. Bet you're excited? Are you on track for a PB attempt?

Had a lovely run in the late afternoon sunshine today. 10k in about 46 mins followed by a sea swim to cool off. Parked off on the beach for an hour afterwards in an attempt to recharge. I'm considering doing a 10k race in a few week's time but have to be careful still and with no speed sessions planned before I'd be happy to go under 42 mins. A pal of mine is doing it and his target is 41:x so it will most likely be a run to enjoy and not go too mad. Although saying that, 41:x would be about my limit at the mo. Enjoy the rest of the bank holiday all.
