a few years since my son was there, OO - he's 29 !  (he's doing Dewsbury 10K on Sunday), but I may well be at the BUCS, as its such a good event  . . .

    excellent 20, kr

Happy Birthday, Gerard - celebrate well !

have scribbled a new "prototype schedule" for my non-marathon running - long run capped at 15 or 16,  3 "sessions" per fortnight with parkrun included as one of these within a longer run, and 2 non-running days per week. Roughly 42 mpw. We'll see how it goes. Kicked off with a steady 6 miles today.

If this post disappears because of the voodoo witchcraft that Speedy Goth mentioned, then I'll just have to come back here later in the week and re-type it.  After all, I need a permanent reminder of this morning's herculean (albeit rather dreary and doubtless futile) effort. 3 hours (let's call it 21 miles) on the treadmill, where even the wit and wisdom of Larry David couldn't dull the pain.

Nope, never run Manchester before, GerardM. But I'm hoping the organisers have got all those pesky flaws (short course, hopeless baggage system etc) out of their system and are now ready to host a splendid event.

TAR   You could win a keep-your-patience contest against the Dalai Lama. As for Curb - top class silliness.

Lorenzo: over 100m it's all about the terrain. On the flat and off road, not that bad. On hills, probably very hard. On tarmac, probably very painful. Which event are you thinking about? It's mainly in the mind and you get to eat like Henry VIII before, during and after. Go for it.

Thinking about signing up for Manc and Hull...but need to concentrate on the bike for a few months.

Thanks for the b-day wishes guys. Had a lovely day celebrating turning 43. Treated myself to a half day from work and ran 3 x 2 mile loops around the reservoir and spent some quality time with my cub. A perfect day!

KR - My office is right on the waterfront and there is often a prevailing westerly wind and when running out along the Prom it is totally exposed, so most of my running nowadays is on lunch I feel the wind. The only option is to head inland and up the hills which I quite enjoy but most routes end up back along the seafront and you're faced with the wind again but hey, it's a nice place to run. Nice running by you!

TAR - Splendid logistics would be excellent. It's a very straight forward course and well supported. Nice 3 hour on the mill!

MsE - well done keeping positive. Here's hoping the ankle strengthening works fast.
Leslie - nicely paced 14 miler on the ice.
Lorenzo - a quality session there - certainly earned your Coco Pops!
PMJ - hoping a bit of rest will sort you out.
Jools - good XC performance and 15 miler the following day.
SBD - excellent 22 miler and top mileage for the week!
Abbers - that's a good race in the middle of your 20 miler.
OO - good 20 miler to finish the week.
GM - happy birthday for yesterday you spring chicken! Sounds like you had a good day.
KR - good long and always nice to get some race entries sorted!
Birch - good luck with the new schedule.
TAR - 3 hours on the dreadmill! Determined effort.
Poacher - go on! You need to press in on your 100 target.
    10 slow miles yesterday and a 12 mile MLR this morning - 6 @ 8:31 and 6 @ 7:49 m/m. Brings me to a meagre total of 150 for the month.

    MsE

A belated Happy Birthday! to Gerard.     Everyone is running really well, I am feeling rather left out.  I hope it is nothing major affecting you, PMJ.  At least I have company on the bench... (clutches at straws)

I hopped on the turbo trainer today and did a 50 minute HIIT session. I am not bike fit.  But at least it will stop me from losing all fitness.   Off to walk the dogs for a second time before a hot yoga class.  None of this other activity seems to keep me fit quite like running though.  See you next month!

    Abbers

    31/01/2017 at 14:03

TAR - 3 hours on the treadmill?!? Good grief man! Patience of a saint.

KR - great running. Vaguely toying with the MK half myself having done it before, and it's about the right distance out from Brighton, but I suspect the reality is that I won't.

Birch - that revised schedule should still keep you decently fit, and always gives you the option of stepping it up again should you ever feel the need...

GM - belated happy returns! Exposed coastal running is the one thing I'm potentially dreading about Brighton, having raced in Bournemouth several times. On a good day, great... on a wet & windy day...

Gul - nice back-to-back double figure runs there. Rather emphasises how much recovery time you had earlier in the month.

MsE - nice bit of variety there as you let nature take its course with the ankle. Stick with it!

PMJ - hope your stay on the bench isn't prolonged.

So Sunday's 20 was followed up by 6 recovery miles yesterday and then a 13 mile MLR today. Should have been 14, but feeling pretty smoked after the last 3 days and legs were grumbling, so decided that the sensible thing to do was to head home and not risk pushing things too much at this stage. So, rough calculations suggest 198 for the month, which is pretty significant for me. And very nearly half way through the 18 week P&D... gulp!

OO, Poacher glad to hear you got into the Coastal.  TAR did you?

I managed to bag a coastal place too although on morning entries opened I was doing the hardest race of my life!  A 12.5 mile fell race with almost 4000 ft climb in the first half.  Mud shin deep, snow and ice on the top, 5 falls in including 2 full on body slides, oosh it were 'ard.

    Almost sounds like fun Minni

13 is more than enough Abbers and an excellent month. Nine and a bit weeks does sound a bit too close for comfort

We'll have you off the bench in no time MsE.

Nice MLR Gul - just focus on February's total mileage (although 28 days doesn't help!)

Hope you enjoyed your birthday GM.

That sounds like a lot of sweat TAR - did you stop to rehydrate or was that 3 hours non-stop?

Sport massage for me today - I'm hoping these 2-weekly indulgences will keep the niggles at bay   Preceded by 10 miles easy at lunch-time.  Sadly only 30 runs completed in January but today brings me up to 308 miles for the month.  That may well be a record!

And the main news - 31 January is about to pass

Gul - Building up slowly is ok, you were ill hey. Nice 10 & 12..

MsE - I hope you are back running again soon but it sounds like you are doing all the right things, must be very frustrating for you.

Abbers - Nice mileage and how time flies when you're having fun hey.

Birch - He was a great runner, I think he was the starter in Manchester last year. I hope is going to be ok.

Jools - Hope your 5k went well.

Did 6 miles along the sea front tonight and it wasn't that windy tonight and quite mild. My legs felt thrashed after yesterday's 6 mile off road run. 7:42mm and only felt like I was moving well in the last mile or so.

SBD, great total, 300 is stupendous.

OO, hope they take the stickers off it, but looks sleek. Keep it in the garage while it is wet and muddy.

January done, 175.49 miles at 7:39 pace. Big difference from the last few years, fewer miles (normally well over 200 with Jantastic) but faster.

Groin not back to 100% but did 2 on Monday and jogged round the lunchtime handicap race yesterday for 4 miles so may even get an easier handicap next month (no chance, it needs about 3 slow runs before my handicap changes).

Jools - Please excuse my ignorance but is indoors track slower than outdoors? I don't know why but I thought it was the other way around?

Gul - I hope the hip doesn't give you anymore jip!

Leslie - A cracking monthly total. How is the hammy?

Minni - Fell racing sounds like a way to injure yourself but fun nonetheless. Have you ever read a book named "Feet above the clouds"?

I've been doing my usual 5k runs the past few days but seem to have come down with a mild cough/cold. Not firing on all cylinders, so I haven't been going too mad. I hope it passes soon as I am free to run as much as I like this weekend.

    DazzaL

    02/02/2017 at 23:08

Lorenzo - Which 100 are you looking at? I was due to run SDW50 this year but pulled to focus on London out so eyeing up WW50 later in the year if I can get the wife onside I'm also toying with SDW100 as it's my stomping ground for next year but I'm not sure I can dedicate the time to training as I'd want to get round under 24 hours to get the one day buckle.

CC2 - Well done on the bling!

SBD - What is your race target? I'm still only on 17milers so feeling a bit behind if you're on 22's already. I'm going to start getting regular massages as they really help my calves.

Abbers - Sounds like a quality if not painful week!

Leslie, Gul - Nice mileage, what do your peak weeks look like?

Calves seem fine now and managed a 17miler last Sunday. 30 miles this week including an interval session on the prom in 40mph winds. Just a progressive 8.5mile and 17miler left to finish the week.

It's been so long since I've trained properly for a marathon I'd forgotten just how hungry I get when marathon training. I had two dinners and two lunches today!

Gul I hope its just a twinge and you are back quickly

Gerard " Not firing on all cylinders" would sum up this week on nightshifts perfectly so far ,easy pace feels like hard work and my hammy is complaining a bit but improving, hope to have some speed before weeks end

DazzaL I'm only on week 1 of 18 this week yet ,in a peak week id be looking to run something like a 16m mlr and say a 22 mile long run trying to pickup the pace towards the end with easy runs of say 6 miles either side of those and maybe a 10 miler if I could fit it in as well for around 70 miles .

Id suggest reading P&D advanced marathoning if you haven't already as it has schedules to follow and consists of many long runs, some with big chucks at mara pace ,some half mara pace short runs and very little actual speed work.

    Gul Darr

    03/02/2017 at 10:38

GM - that pesky cough/cold! Get well soon.
DazzaL - pleased to hear your calf muscles are fine. A peak mileage week for me would probably consist of a long run, a couple of MLRs (11-16) miles, a couple of easy runs (7-10 miles) and a couple of recovery runs (4-6 miles). Most of that would be easy/slow pace (8:00-9:xx m/m) and certainly nothing faster than MP when doing that sort of mileage. I'd reduce the mileage if doing faster tempo runs or intervals. Otherwise I might end up with a pain in the hip
    OO - enjoy Greenwich park!
Leslie - thanks. Feels okay and just itching to go out for a run, but trying to be patient. Hope you're improving too!
So rest day today. I think the people responsible for upgrading this website must be having lots of rest too!

I was thinking that, too, GD: waiting for the new forum with baited breath...

Club session last night: 5 x 1km.  First one was a bit sluggish (3.53), but then kicked up a gear with 3.38, 3.41, 3.41 and 3.40.

    Birch

    03/02/2017 at 11:49

    Gerard -

Outdoor tracks are made of Tartan which is comparable to the better indoor tracks,  but generally track material for outdoors is more conducive to faster running.

More pertinently, indoor tracks are half as big as outdoor tracks. Indoor tracks are 200m , while outdoor tracks are 400 m ,and thus there is less turning in outdoor tracks. - the less you turn, the faster you will be able to run.

    Joolska

    03/02/2017 at 13:11

Sorry, missed your question, GM. Thanks for replying, Birch!  The only thing that can make an indoor track more favourable is the lack of headwind so although 60m isn't raced outdoors by seniors very frequently (at all?) I suspect 60m indoors would be quicker than 60m outdoors, because it is on a straight.  After that the turns slow you down.  Also, as I understand it, indoor racing is more tactical because of (a) the turns and (b) the banking, which you try to take advantage of (accelerating down the banking if you have gone wide, etc.) - but all of this is gleaned from watching indoor meets on tv rather than ever trying it myself!

    The Accidental Runner

    03/02/2017 at 13:56

Minni - the Coastal is my favourite race, but I've decided to give it a miss this year.  The cross country drive from the north west coast to the north east coast takes far too long enough by half.

No breaks for drinks etc, SBD.  Just a brief step-off to change the DVD. I'm aware, of course, that 21 treadmill miles isn't the same as 21 outdoor miles.  In my made-up conversion table, I'd say it's equal to about 16 or 17.  But that'll have to do. 44 treadmill miles so far this week.  So that's about 35 real miles.

That's a shame TAR as we'll have 3 OO's in the race tis year. Though I must confess I enjoyed it less that usual last year. All those tricky climbs and rocks are less fun in my old age.

As far as I know that's Junior's first indoor race so not bad considering her lack of experience. She was beaten by one of her friends who is a real track specialist.

I did 13 today over 2 runs around Greenwich- both pretty poor in pace but clocked up the miles.

We'll do a parkrun tomorrow then I'll aim for 18 Sunday so should bag another 50.

    GerardM

    03/02/2017 at 20:27

Leslie - That's some training 10k run. Watch that hammy though.

Birch/Jools - Thanks for the explanation and it makes sense, although Eamonn Coghlan seemed to revel when turning round corners.

OO - I must admit I had to google Infiniti. Looks luxurious. Good luck tomorrow.

Dazzal  - Good news re your running. It's weird how we all differ re higher mileage and food consumption. I'm the complete opposite and don't feel that hungry when I run more miles but I do need a bit of fuel in me when running more than 15.

Gul - Good patience there, your hip will thank you.

I'm the same, still have an annoying cough and too busy in work to get out for a run today. I was going to do parkrun tomorrow as it's my first free weekend in a month but I'm going to give it a miss as I don't think I'm well enough to race a 5k. I hope to get out for a run Sunday. Might even do a 10 miler if I feel well enough.

    03/02/2017 at 21:28

GM - work has an annoying habit of getting in the way.  Hopefully you get out Sunday.

    All good miles OO.

Cracking pavement 10K Leslie - you need to find a race

TAR - why wouldn't you convert at 1:1? - I'm doing 3 recovery runs per week on the treadmill and find them harder to complete than outside.

Dazzal - no target at the moment (although a 3:20 GFA sounds achievable). I am on week 9 (of 18) of the P&D 55-70 schedule - so these are peak mileage weeks.  If you don't already have one it's worth trying to follow a progressive and structured plan such as P&D or the RW ones.

A bit windy this afternoon although the rain held off during the track tempo session.  11 miles with the middle 11K at 6:35 m/m pace.  Not quite in the mood to push too hard today but happy to bank the tempo miles.

Gerard enjoy the 10 miler, damn coughs can linger for ages and people around me had the flu at work trying to stay well clear of that too

SBD cracking bit of tempo running ,its 6 weeks to my half ,there was a local 10 miler sooner but its in the middle of nightshift but it sold out quick, plus having a few niggles at the minute which is holding me back a bit haven't ran a proper long run since 14th jan ...

Good outing today at the Burgess parkrun in London. Mrs OO doing her first ever parkrun and ran the whole way round. I was 8th with an 18:20. Even better after 13 yesterday.

The Runner Formerly Known as Lorenzo

    04/02/2017 at 19:33

DazzaL - nothing remotely set in stone for a 100 miler yet. I want to see how I do in London this year - if I'm getting closer to sub-3 then I'll probably keep chasing it; it I'm slowing up, then I might have to be tempted by something like the NDW 100.

Great going from the OO clan (young and old!) in the last few days.

GM - I'm with you in the sick ward at the moment. I managed an OK'ish 3 x 1 mile session on Tuesday, but then felt lousy in the evening and for the last couple of days have hardly had the energy to get out of the house. At least there was the rugby to act as a welcome distraction today, but it's still very frustrating.

Definitely won't be up to running tomorrow so am writing off the week at the embarrassing level of 9.6 miles.

SBD - You're nailing those sessions. Nice work!

OO - Well run in your parkrun and congrats to Mrs OO too. Not quite the 50 you'd hoped for but 47 is still good.

PMJ - 9 off road at that pace sounds very good to me.

Lorenzo - Oh no not you as well. I hope you feel better soon.

Leslie - Nice run in those conditions. It's warmed up here now but plenty of rain unfortunately.

Jools - Crikey, that certainly qualifies as lonnnnnnng run! Great weekly total.

I've had a really busy weekend here. The weather has been a mix of lovely and atrocious. I was on cub scout volunteering duties yesterday, with a bit of bush craft and cooking for lots of hungry cubs thrown into the nix, I really enjoyed that and took me back to times when out in Africa.  I had penciled in 10 for this morning but it was absolutely tipping it down from 6-12. I eventually got out around 3pm and did 8 miles @ 7:21mm and it was super windy along the promenade but dry at least. It was a lovely run and i felt very good. My cough is almost gone now and I think the rest did me a world of good as my legs felt great. I hope to nail some proper sessions this week.

Jools - nice set of 1km reps and accidental VLR!
Leslie - that's a stonking 10k any day, but in training it's quite remarkable. Good mileage for the week.
    SBD - good tempo run.
PMJ - good parkrun and off-road running.
OO - tidy parkrun and well done to Mrs OO - can't be easy when the rest of the family are so speedy!
    Lorenzo - get well soon.
GM - pleased to hear you're on the mend.
Well, I've been out for a couple of test runs and my hip is still not quite right. If I take it really slow then I can't tell there's an issue, but as soon as I begin to pick up the pace there's just a slight niggle, so might need a bit more rest.

I've been without wifi for a whole weekend and I've only had to catch up on half a page. Where is everyone?

Took this morning off work to recover from a stressful weekend (not just the lack of wifi). I'm sooo enjoying slobbing on the sofa and seriously wondering if I actually need to run this morning before work this afternoon. I may regret losing the opportunity later in the week I suppose, but I'm so chilled out right now!

The treadmill is certainly harder on the brainbox, SBD. But in terms of training for a marathon, I can't imagine that treadmill miles are as valid as outdoor miles.  Unless, of course, the marathon is to be held on a treadmill.

It's all about injury protection, Leslie. To equalise before the other team scores. Or something.

Stay chilled on the sofa, Speedy.

All day in a legal course tomorrow so Monday and Tuesday easy 5s got put together for an easy 10 today. Plotted out an off road course and turned out to be be a cross section of pretty much all the local valleys so 10 miles at 8:43 average but that included 3 valleys down and up on the outward westerly leg, then a long pull up a valley before the same 3 valleys on the inward easterly leg and capped off with a glorious descent back down a long valley to the start.

The only good thing about a poor a Sunday run is that it sets you up for a great Monday. 12 mile progression today averaging 8:13 per mile. Good start to the week.

It is rather quiet around here, everybody must be out running...

You have encouraged me to drag myself out of my pity pit, Leslie  .  Three weeks post ankle sprain and I am tentatively back on the 'mill. An easy 5 miles today. Aiming for 50% of the scheduled volume to see if London is a go-er or not (as it is just 10 weeks).  Ankle around 80% function so not comfortably out of the woods yet. Seeing the consultant in 10 days.  After 3 weeks off, I reckon I have lost around 9 weeks' fitness  .

Nice start to the week, OO.  Those MLRs are so darned satisfying.

Is it a familiar hip issue, Gul?    Hope it settles down.

Excellent week's mileage, Jools, topped off by a monster long run.

Glad to hear you are getting better finally, Gerard.  I always want to drive over with some nourishing food when you tell your tales of feeling run down!

Jools maybe this is the new forum and we just don't know it

PMJ sounds like tough hills but very scenic.

0054 nice bit of progression running.

MSE 80% sounds workable if it holds up now and fitness should soon improve

    8 early easy ones 8:10 m/mile  average.

    Speedy - happy chilling.
TAR - of course the sure fire way to not get any running related injury is simply to not run. Don't think it will catch on somehow.
Leslie - good recovery and easy runs.
PMJ - almost makes the legal course bearable!
    OO - nice progressive run.
MsE - hope the ankle is healing faster than you think. Yes, I've had this issue with the hip before and it usually does sort itself out with a bit of rest, thanks.
Rest day. And the cold is back. Oh well...

    Hi all,

Gul - hip & cold? Look after yourself...

Speedy - hope the slobbing/running combo helped you get rid of the stress levels.

MsE - best of luck with getting that ankle right.

Good running from many others; shaping up nicely!

The weekend featured 6 easy on Saturday with 6x100 strides thrown in, then Sunday was a 15 miler with 12 miles at MP. Bearing in mind it was early, unfuelled and slightly tired/hung over after the rugby, I was delighted to see that come out at 7:41 pace, or in other words, pretty much bang on desired mara pace. 5 easy yesterday as I enter week 10 of the 18.

MsE - Thanks, you're a kind soul. I'm glad you are seeing some improvement with your ankle.

    Leslie - Nice easy 8.

Speedy - It's good to do that every once in a while.

Gul - Roll on springtime hey. Hope the rest sorts you out.

Abbers - That's a good effort all things considered. The training seems to be working for you.

OO - Nice training and a good start to the week. Have you taken your new wheels out for a good spin yet?

Did a 5.2k run on lunch today and could still feel the chesty cough but not too bad. Took it super easy and probably just as well as I felt flat as a pancake, legs and energy wise. Was going to do a double and go for another easy run but I think the rest will do me more good. Hoping for something better tomorrow.

No Gerard, it has sat on my drive since it was delivered. I saw it in the dark last Sunday night and I'll not see it again until Thursday

In other related news I heard my assignment to Geneva will end at the end of March. I'll do the same job and still travel, but less, and based from the UK. Retirement definitely beckons April 2018. I'm not sure if it was shock or disappointment but I skipped a run today and have sat around all evening reflecting over a bottle of wine

OO - It's good to take some time to reflect on things over a nice bottle of vino. Sounds like you're in a good position for the future.

Gul - Sounds like you're on the mend and well done on choosing another rest day.

Yikes Leslie. It's mild here at the mo but I think a cold snap is on the way.

Decided to try get an early night and was in bed by 10;20 which is something I

never do. Typical I woke up at 2:40am with a cough but luckily went back to sleep soon after, just as well as I agreed to meet a friend down the track this morning at 6:30am. Uggh I hate early mornings but I felt surprisingly ok and it wasn't raining thakfully. We did 6 x 800m reps off 2 min recoveries. Reps were  supposed to be roughly 5k pace and went 2:59, 2:56, 2:54, 2:58, 2:51, 2:48. Happy enough with those and the first 4 felt comfortable, so I think we gauged the pace just about right. That was my first proper track session since last year's debacle at Manchester and it felt good to be back down there.

Odd run at lunch today due to GPS issues. Planned a 13 miler and all going well, first mile 8:11 and then got into the rhythm of it and 4 miles at 7:30, all easy, and then suddenly GPS was saying 8:10, then 8:20, 8:30, over 10 and still hadn't done 6 miles. I knew I wasn't going slow and indeed I was pushing hard to try and get it back onto 7:30. Decided the GPS was wrong so stopped and reset it, and after a mile or so it eventually started to make sense again. Looking at the trace afterwards, I somehow ran pretty much straight through the middle of Kew Gardens including the ornamental ponds. Got back into the flow of it afterwards but had obviously overcooked things a bit in the middle so it was a bit more restrained coming back. Still, 13 miles done and that is 36 miles in 3 days running (Saturday, Monday and today) with 2 days off and the body seems to be standing up to it so good signs.

I was just going to say it would be nice to chill and hang here. I'm no IT expert and I'm sure there are many on here who would know more about this kind of thing but I'm guessing this link will be history soon? PMJ, you seem to know about these kinda things? Any thoughts? Should we all refrain from posting on here now and up sticks to the new one?

Cracking 13 there PMJ. I had to settle for 2*5 miles (lunch and evening). Both fairly pacey progression runs. Feeling fresh after that days rest.

How you can run that fast at 6am is beyond me Gerard- good effort.

    Morning All.

Good to read that you are all going well (some better that others as usual).  Practically no running going on here so I'm not really following the thread at the moment

I'm still injured.  I've started work with a new biokineticist here who is strengthening my hip and performing deep tissue massage to reshape the underlying muscles that seem so damaged.  I've begun a slight amount of run/walk lamp-post to lamp-post but nothing significant.  I've still got some pain but things looking hopeful.

Thankfully I've now got a 'proper' job for one of the big 5 IT consultancies and am working at one of the big telecoms operators here.  The commute is not a bad as previous at just 119km instead of the previous 142km.  I've got a flat in Joburg too so much more time to spend on exercise/fitness than previously.  All good.

Nice car OO and a good decision to buy Japanese.  I bought a German car recently and am already regretting it.  Enjoy it.

GM - don't worry about losing any posts on this thread. I am saving them ready to re-post on the new forum! Well, it keeps me busy you know...
OO - maybe shorter and faster is the way to go!
Bike It - good to hear from you. "Just" 119km commute! Sounds like things are looking up though. Hope the rehab goes well and you can make some steady progress.
7 slow miles this morning and hip seems fine, so will try a week of moderate mileage and see how it goes.

Gul - Good man! Good to see you are back to it.

Bike it - Nice to hear from you. Glad things seem to be on the up for you job wise and hopefully you can get the injury sorted soon. I presume you wont be doing Comrades this year?

OO - That early track session was made easier by having my friend with me who is aiming for a sub 3 in April, he's in great shape at the mo and I didn't want to slow him down but was I surprised how well it went for someone who doesn't do early runs or track sessions much. Nice double.

Leslie - I set the alarm for 6am again this morning but opted for a lie in today.

5k lunch run for me today and i wanted to see some good numbers for a solo training run. so it was 10;10 out and 9:37 back for 6:22mm average. I'll take that for now. Out on a works do tonight so will have a day off tomorrow and then hopefully parkrun on Saturday. The weather is not looking great so will see how it goes.
