This could all land well now. My wife was feeling a bit crappy yesterday and tested positive for covid. I'm  negative so far.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
SBD - good that you had minimal disruption from cv.

Dawg - 47 is still quite low esp as you've stopped hammering most of run paces, you should soon adapt assuming you are not unwell or have other stresses going on. Dont worry about pace, i do loads of 8:XX, tonights 12m was av 8.36.

DT - fingers crossed then, although now could be a good time to get the isolation done.
  • No Nationals for me. Last time I attempted to run at Parliament Hill I fell over and broke myself. My only ever DNF and I couldn't run for months. No Inter Counties either as it doesn't fit with Manchester Marathon training. Also Prestwold Hall is a nasty, nasty course that doesn't suit me at all. Had it been at the old venue in Birmingham (Cofton park maybe?) I might have done it, but not at Prestwold.

Seriously DT, try to catch it from your wife now. Get it over with while you can't run anyway!

Myself and kids are all still negative surprisingly. I'm wondering if it had a go at me early last week as I was under par in my session last Tuesday and felt listless. My wife first said on Thursday she thought she was about to have a cold as her chest was tight. She is asthmatic and it basically acts like an early warning system for anything incoming.

In other news I got a place yesterday for the great Bentley half which I've been on a waiting list for since October. It's 3 hours away and a very small race that sold out in a few hours but bizarrely been selected by England Athletics as an age group qualifier. Very few folk looking to go there specifically for that reason will have got in and it presents my best possible chance of a top 3 AC placing in this sort of thing.

So, this hamstring really needs to fix fast. I've physio Thursday to get the scar tissue earned out and will probably book back in early next week too.
  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
It certainly sounds like you had some sort of lurgy, DT.  I hope the physio can help with a bit of deep tissue work on Thursday.

Lots of jumping and planking in last night's S&C session and then 6 miles this morning followed by me headbutting our (metal) postbox as I lifted up the recycling bins to bring them back in.  My, doesn't a small-ish superficial cut on your scalp bleed a lot?
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Crikey Jools that's an unlikely injury.
Good luck with the physio DT
I've had swims today and yesterday- great to be back. And track tonight- a tough sesh club sesh with 4*1200, taking on junior OO 🤭
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭
Funny how we put our bodies through all sorts in this running lark yet find the strangest, most innocuous ways to hurt ourselves, Jools. Hope it's OK.
    Sending healing vibes, DT.
Good luck at the track, OO. Rather you than me with that session.

Managed to get a 10 miler done at lunchtime today as I re-introduce the Tuesday 10 to the plan. I never run these in one pace, I always like to muck around with the session. Today was 2 x 5 mile progressives with 10 second uplifts from 7.2x to 6.4x. Came out at 7.04 average.

It was cold, wet, and my injury niggles were on show a bit but it was the best quality session for some time. Hopefully turning a corner.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Not sure what you were worrying about then Dawg, thats not the run of someone tired. Good news as you say.

DT - blimey, that's only 3 wks, i was thinking you'd be going well to be back in good hm shape for Wokey. Thats a long way away too, i went to a uni open day at Colchester with my youngest as it was one of only 2 places that offered the course he wanted, its a long way east.

I used to live in Ipswich and I grew to despise the A12!

A lovely 6 miles this morning.  No hearings today so I was able to leave a little later and enjoy the sunrise.  There must have been a temperature inversion, as the Avon Gorge was full of fog, with a glorious red sunrise above it.  It's rare that I wish I had my phone with me on a run, but it would have made a fantastic shot!
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
Tr, yes it's put unnecessary pressure on my recovery but my view is I don't necessarily need to be at my best looking at past results so if I miss two weeks training now, I've two weeks to build back up, hopefully I won't have lost that much fitness and it's worth a punt to achieve a goal.

The drive is a bit worse than I thought but there's a Premier inn 2m from race HQ that's £40 the night before so manageable.

Leg still sore, but getting a little better each day. Hoping now that the initial 72 hours is done and I can start massaging and stretching as well as having physio it'll kick on fast.

Gdawg, mice work on the 10m mix up run. Are you in for Manchester?
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
Just had confirmation of my Berlin gfa place. Getting in all the races now I'm injured!
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭
Good news on Berlin, DT, nice one! With another summer training block, you'll hit a cracking time on that course.
Yep, the current campaign is all about Manchester. Track sesh tonight. I've nicked and modified a session from OO from last week. Tonight I'll go for 1,2,3 laps (1 min recs) at around 6.00m/m pace, rest for a couple of mins and repeat twice more. Should be interesting.

Oh well, great plans and all that. Started the track session, I was the only one there. Warmed up with a few laps then began the reps. Each lap got slower due to ice forming on the track. Seemed to get worse each lap as I was slipping all over the place, proper Bambi on ice stuff.
No point continuing as I may have fallen or injured myself.

Hit the dark streets for a few easy miles instead.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Dawg - good decsion, you dont need to do track reps to run a strong mara anyway.

DT - difficult to predict who will show up to a masters qualifier........i often run chichester 10k in feb which is a big and fast race (2000 runners). In 2019 i ran 37.59 and only came 164th as it was now a masters qualifier, the following year there were loads more folks there chasing a masters slot, i ran 36.31 and came 163rd........however your race is a long way away for lots of folks. Is wokey a qualifier too?
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
Gdawg, good safe decision, more to lose than gain tonight.

Tr, wokey is also one but on a normal year, with 1.18 I'd do well to be 5th in my AC. This year every master looking for a place will be there. We'll located and easy to enter.

The one I've entered is a comparatively tiny race, capped at 750, much more difficult location but mainly, sold out in two hours, mainly to locals. The organisers announced with no prior warning at 9am on a Saturday entries were going live at midday. Also their site or entry process don't even mention its a masters qualifier. You'd have needed to have been a very clued up random master to have been Johnny on the spot to get in this. Hence why I consider it a preferable option.

Well done on getting the Great Bentley HM entry DT - definitely worth a shot.  Hope you can sort out the hamstring injury in a reasonable time.  It was a week after my OH tested positive when I also got the positive result having had symptoms the day before.  And good news on Berlin.

Sounds like you could have done with some deicer tonight G-D.  Poor commitment from your club mates but good decision to hit the streets!

Hope the track session went well OO and you managed to keep Junior at bay.

Day 12 post Covid positive and finally managed a negative LFT - feel a lot happier now about any close contact with family, friends and colleagues.  Struggling a bit on the motivational front so carded zeros on Monday and Tuesday.  Forced myself out lunchtime today in the clear skies and winter sunshine for a steady 15 miles @ 7:43/m.  Just need to tick off the runs and wait for the enthusiasm to return.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
DT - your homework sounds like it should pay off then. Hopefully you'll get good news at the physio tomorrow.

SBD - you did yourself a big favour by keeping running through CV in terms of consistency, in a week or 2 when you are fully over it no doubt your enthusiasm will be back.
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
Sbd, that's madness. Other than essentials I'm already sort of isolating just to be safe and testing daily, if I get to her 7th day then test positive, then spend 7-12 days in that's a long time. My wife was rough Monday and Tuesday,  but only in the context of the stages of a cold, and spent blocks of yesterday in bed but 80% fine today.

Hopefully you'll pick up a grt Bentley place this weekend. That'll bring the enthusiasm back I'm sure.

Tr, yep, I just hope a crazy decision Saturday morning doesn't prove to be hugely regrettable.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Shame you missed out on the track sesh GD. I was back at it this morning- 10 *300 flat out. My pal Charlotte P used to hold UK 800m record as an under 20 so hanging on to her is no easy task.

Glad you are on the mend DT. Hope you are fit in time for your race though hardly yhe ideal preparation.

Nice going, oo, though reading it makes my hamstring hurt a little more.

Physio was OK! She said there's no evidence on look or feel, or based on my movements to suspect any more than top end grade 1 strain. She thinks it'll need 7-10 more days to clear and in meantime has sent me specific hamstring exercises to build it up and said getting on a spin bike is fine as long as I'm not initially doing spin, need low to moderate gears and seated work. Said to Try 20 mins tomorrow and see how it feels Saturday  and take it up each day if OK. By Monday I can be getting some pretty high end cv workouts in on it hopefully which will do a job to maintain fitness. Chiropractor Tuesday will help a lot as I respond well to needling then physio again next Friday.

Ant Berlin experts here?? I'm looking at hotels, I'm going yo book a Motel one which is similar to premier inn. I've looked at mitte, Tiergarten and Alexanderplatz. All appear reasonably good for getting to race but anyone know much about how good a location they are generally for seeing city and restaurants. Tiergarten is my current favourite as in a quieter location and workable to start. Mitte looks like a lively area so maybe don't want to risk noise.
  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
That's great news about the hamstring, DT.  Fingers crossed the bike workouts go ok.

I've only been to Berlin once and that was an orchestra tour, so a bit of a different focus!  Mitte is very much socialising, and Alexanderplatz is quite touristy, IIRC.  Tiergarten would be good for doing shake-out runs if needed, and is a lovely open space.

OO: flat out 300s are something I don't miss now that I'm a fun runner, although I'm sure they did me a lot of good.

A lovely easy 6 miles this morning: I think frosty, clear mornings at sunrise are one of the nicest times to run.  Although I agree with GD that frosty tracks are no fun.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Yes it was almost enough to make me retire Jools 😆
I stayed in Mitte DT and it was very lively indeed. Basically anywhere on the park where you start and finish is going to be fine and metros are cheap and frequent.
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
That was my thinking Jools, re Tiergarten.

Oo, I'm going with a few mates who'll be there for the beers, I dont want late night temptation on my front door.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Those are the best trips DT. My Boston plan is also looking like a bit of a post race booze cruise, but some hard core runners included.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Good news re the hammy DT, hopefully its nicely on the mend. Bike should be ok for a hammy, will help blood flow too.
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭
For Berlin, I stayed in a road just off the Tiergarten (south side), DT. Very handy for the start/finish, just a 10 minute walk. A short walk from restaurants etc for pre/post race carbs.

Work getting in the way of running at the mo, so just 5 steady last night, same today and regular LSR tomorrow. Won't be able to hit the trails as they'll be either too muddy or frozen in a way that could break an ankle.
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
Oo, it's great post race, however Friday and Saturday I'll want to be early to bed.

I'm pretty settled on Tiergarten area now, seems to to tick the boxes.

Leg feels much better today comparatively, no doubt the benefit of massage. 25 mins on spin bike, some mild discomfort for first 15 which physio said is normal then it switched off quite a bit for last 10. Standing on a more moderate gear turned out to be more comfortable than sitting.

Managed yo move my chiropractor appointment forwards to tomorrow. Hoping his work can pull me forwards to a similar degree to physio yesterday.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
18:28 at parkrun- my best since Covid. Also gave the Alphaflys a run out. They felt great in the warmup but I prefer Vaporflys for flat out racing. Very spongy and bouncy- I fancy these may be my shoes for Boston 🤔
XC relays tomorrow which means I'll miss my LSR and probs only manage 40 miles this week.

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
Nice work on the parkrun, OO.  Fair play racing back-to-back over the weekend: I hope the relays went well.

A very pleasant 11 miles in the sun this morning.  I almost got hot running up a hill on the way home!
