  • I'm not a morning person, full stop. I value my sleep and try to get 8 hrs a night, usually managing 7-8. Anything less and I just feel carp all day. I don't know how all you people get up so early: Earliest I have ever gone out to run is about 8am, but when I do go out early I usually just have a glass of water - that's good for up to 12 miles anyway.

Now that I'm building up my long runs, I'm doing them in the evenings. Planning a personal-longest 16 miles tonight, fuelled with gatorade.

The advantage of getting up at 5.30am means that 6.40am the next morning feels like a lie-in! Like you I will be running my LSR tonight, before the club's core stretching session LTR.

Fit your training in when it best suits you and your family. Endurance sports are selfish and your family dont ask you to do them. I train early or I dont get to train, as I'm not prepared to give up other time for training. I have too much else going on that comes before my own sports especially in the cricket season.

I trained for my first VLM in the evenings but in my experience most folks that want to keep at this for a while switch to early mornings. If you need more sleep then you just go to bed a bit earlier.

TR - keeping those at home happy is paramount in my opinion. Luckily, having three daughters (if that could ever be lucky??) I have fairly quiet summers and whenever lurking on this or the Sub 3 thread I was always amazed at how you fit in so much. Then the winter arrives and I have a similar life which forces my running to the early mornings whilst driving my eldest to various hockey matches. Cricket is so time consuming though so I take my hat off to you!

I love reading how some of our kids are doing in whatever sport they have chosen. My early cricket days were amongst the best of my life and I often think back to those times when I read your updates.

3 daughters here too DS2, but not very sporty. My house is empty now 2 are away at Uni and the 3rd became a hermit always studying.

  • It's all about finding the right balance with the home life. Marathon training does take up a lot of time, so I usually go out when the kids are in bed or early doors on a Sunday AM. I can only manage the LSR though early!

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭

OO - my other daughters aren't all that sporty. They are twins but have some learning difficulties related to being autistic so following instructions is quite difficult for them and, although, the elder one likes sport she is dyspraxic so lacks co-ordination. She tried hockey but it's not easy for her, but they are both pretty good swimmers so they stay fit & healthy, and above all happy!

Knight rider - how old are your children?

  • inversely exponential deterioration DS2. ie starts off really crap and ended up better. I agree it needs more research on my part and intend to selflessly throw myself headlong into scientific analysis this Saturday watching Wales being overwhelmingly overrun by some massive antipodeans.

2 girls for me with hockey, netball, sleepovers and parties being the main focus of their lives.

I have my rescheduled MLR tonight and may try a little 4 or 5 miler tomorrow am all things permitting.

Mennania - haha. Timothy Taylors - one of my favourites. Do you live in that part of the country? Used to drink a fair bit of it when I worked in Skipton. Have three sisters as well as three daughters, hence the massive amount of time I spend doing or watching sport!

Have just had the go ahead to share the fact that I am in at bootcamp for the Asics target 26.2. Apparently, they are even happy for us to tweet it this year! Should be a great day out whatever the outcome and really looking forward to the coaching from what I've heard from previous participants. (eg. Knight rider).

  • DS2 - great news. Fame and fortune for another forumite!

2 active lads (excluding me) in our household. Elder one (nearly 16) plays and refs rugby as well as playing in a couple of brass bands and (in theory at least) studying for his GCSEs; younger one (just turned 12) does cross country (min 2 club sessions a week training), badminton (school and club), rugby (school), volleyball (club) and plays the guitar and ukulele(!).

Mrs L runs, teaches and sings in a choir (not all at the same time!)

I run, cycle (when the weather's decent), play volleyball (and squash and badminton occasionally), help manage my son's rugby team and am a governor at the primary school my lads went to. No surprises that the only time I can get out for a run is before the rest of the family are up.

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭

Lorenzo - Another active family - it's the only way! Understand the very early starts now!

Have tweeted my delight at being shortlisted. My first ever tweet! My eldest will be so proud of me - or maybe embarassed???

Great DS2 image  do us proud image

  • I've not yet got into Twitter, but I quite enjoy the occasional foray on Facebook, if only to see some very intriguing picture of fellow forumites!  image

  • Oh no, the rogue picture of me and Minni has made a reappearance!!!

  • KeirKeir ✭✭✭

    Nice legs Minni!

  • MinniMinni ✭✭✭
Lol! We must stop meeting like this Lorenzo!
  • Jools Hope the neck gets sorted.

AR Hopefully the worst is now over.

Unfortunately as I work away, so when here I have no major family time issues. Plus an hour ahead, so even running after work gets me back for 6pm U.K. time. When I am home I can run after 9 am after dropping the daughter at school. I still run early at the weekend and/or move my week, so LSR on a Friday with rest day on Saturday etc. I struggle/am impressed how you all manage to fit so much in.

Maybe it is because I have been away for a while, but Minni I have never noticed how attractive your legs were before!!

4 miles at 8:53 tonight. All very easy.

  • TRTR ✭✭✭

Lorenzo - your world is as busy as mine.

DS2 - hope you get picked then.

I'm doing my bit for Movember.  Or is it Fanuary..... image

Racing Weight - I've read it. It will tell you absolutely nothing that you didn't know already, but it tells it in a nice, concise way. If you need reminding about what you do actually know, then it's worth a squiz.

Spot on Speedy.  Its an area I think I can improve so finding the book quite interesting.  I generally eat healthily but never pay much attention to how much of this and how much of that I'm eating (carbs, protein etc)  I've downloaded an app to do this for me and we'll see if it makes a difference.  I'm determined to cut down on the vino a bit too.  I haven't had a drink since Friday image although I have been ill most of that time! image

  • Good luck with boot camp DS2 . No tweeting or facebooking for me, just seems to cause more trouble than good from what I see around me. Clearly that will change when the girls go to uni in a few but will continue to resist till then. Impressed that you guys fit in so much, never mind an hour a day running!

Hope you are feeling beter Minni.

9 for me at 8.30 pace tonight in the dark and mud. Very nice. Off to read P&D as I am starting to question how the programme is going to take me from my embedded 8.30 pace to sub 7s in 16 easy weeks,,,,,

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Suddenly realised my season is over. No races in the plan and nothing worth mentioning until January.

Scooby, I'll be following you on the work away kick from next April. Have you found it helps or hinders your training? I should have more time mid week but I usually take it too easy if I'm not training with a club.

  • OO - know what you mean, I was lucky to get a place in a half in December from a Clubmate who is injured, so had a bit of focus for a few weeks.

Menn, looks like you are building up your base nicely. Speedwork I guess is the key in reagrds to the 7.xx pace.

Great news DS2 - enjoy the day at Bootcamp! I'm sure whatever the outcome you'll pick up some good tips. My kids are 8 & 6 BTW.

I haven't had a drink since last night Minni - partly as I thought I might go out for a run later tonight, but have gone off the idea now (10.52pm). Although I have been out for a run once at 11pm which was weird.

  • Earlier this year I needed to drop elder Lorenzito off at school at about 4 in the morning so rather than go to bed I decided to go for a 20 miler through the woods starting at about 11pm. Good fun, but I was a bit knackered the following day.

Where's Poacher when we need some tales of running at crazy hours?!
  • Go on then....craziest ever was night fell running on Kinder Scout which is covered in very deep peat hags and hard to navigate even in daylight. Possibly quite dangerous to do this solo. Good sunrise though.

Scariest ever was running from Salford right across Gtr Manchester starting at 0200. Some very dodgy people about, Hyde was really a bit worrying.

Just been rereading Running Through The Wall which puts all this into perspective though, those US runners are supertough.

Anyway good luck DS, as as we say round here, "don't be sh!t"

Minni's hands plus Lorenzos legs makes.....the Gangnam Style invisible horse dance - hurrah!

  • KeirKeir ✭✭✭

I was feeling quite proud to get in 14m in the rain and wind last night. Realise now that it 'boys stuff' compared to the real men 'Lorenzo and Poacher'. image

Are you doing a full day at work with no sleep Lorenzo?

  • Keir - don't worry. It was a Saturday morning drop off for him to catch an early flight to go on a German exchange trip!! I'm normally OK with 6 hours sleep but think I'd struggle with zero.

Sounds like there'll be some interesting running conditions this weekend.

Anyone else planning on going to the Running Show at Sandown park this weekend? It's free to enter (if you register in advance) so I'll be there first thing Saturday to check out some bargains and freebies.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the good wishes re bootcamp. I will try my best not to be sh!t. Unfortunately having problems with system at work so restricted to phone. I will have to read back properly tonight.

Steady 9.25 at 7.45mm first thing. Felt relatively comfortable so making some progress. A little faster than I should have run but wanted to stretch legs at the end.

Enjoyed the stories of mad hours running exploits.

I did notice that despite free attendance "There is a charge of £5 for all day parking at the venue."

  • Well done DS2, good luck fella

    Thanks SJ!

I'm just pleased to have got to bootcamp. Wasn't expecting that so it came right out of the blue. I've never entered this sort of thing before because we had such a long (4 years) fight getting my daughters diagnosed and then educated properly that I've never had the time to commit fully to the training, let alone the updating of forums etc. I would never to eneter something like this and not do it justice - it would be like all those people who get a place at VLM and don't bother (not that I'm bitter!!!)

One of the girls started her specialist school only last week but dealing with the authorities this school year has been far less time consuming and I knew this was the year to get back to it properly. Hence, coming back to this thread and feeling properly motivated.

Lorenzo/PMJ - I was thinking of going on Sunday. it's only about an hours drive. I'll have to have a chat with Mrs DS2. Two hours running in the morning and then that may be a bridge too far! Hope you pick up some bargains!
