Can openers! I thought we were all fitness freaks on here and only ate fresh food.

8 miles along the towpath this evening without managing to fall in the canal. Pitch black it was, and a little creepy or am I just a bit of a wuss. But very enjoyable, saves running up and down the A4 breathing in rush hour car fumes.

Looking forward to the Pomagne, Minni.

thats what you get for living in the sticks minni.

Taking my daughter to the parkrun tomorrow, so could post my slowest ever time.

  • Here I am, Minni! I've been away from the thread while I had a visit from Ma Ant (10 days) and also was getting myself sorted viz a viz orthotics and a knee support, as said articulation was giving me so much gip I could hrdly walk. Between runs, that is, as I've managed to keep up about 25 miles a week,  which considering I've been feeling so achy, stiff and creaky is a miracle.

The weather here's been atrocious all week but is still not all that cold. I am actually looking forward to some really cold, bright mornings...

I will do the decent thing and read back properly, but for now I wish you all a good weekend's running/racing.

  • I have a record player, two double tape decks and two VHS recorders. I think I still have a Sony Walkman somewhere too. They still work. Mind you, I also have DVD players, ipods and Sky+.

  • moof wrote (see)
We went all sky+ a few months back and its completely changed our lives! Constant arguments with lack of recording space left on the hard drive. Who the hell series links coro noro and is it such a big deal that I deleted the last episode of downton abbey bollox.
Give me tapes any day, at least you can hide them...ahem.

I'm surprised my wife hasn't got an American accent with all the sky + american series she watches (mostly when I am out runnnig!). We have still got the Olympic opening ceremeony on sky +.

OO - respect to the vinyl. I have got my Technic decks & mixer to play my dance vinyl on and a USB turntable to convert it all to MP3's - it's the future. SOme of the stuff I have got you can't download.

Minni - we just have the basic sky and no sports. My lad was a flag bearer the other week for Leicester City which was on sky sports - had to get the inlaws to "tape it". Showing my age by saying that!

20p videos from ther charity shop is brilliant Keir. Sadly I had to give away my Kylie & Metallica videos to my local charidee shop as we don;t have one anymore. Hopefully there is a teenager somewhere very happy!

I'm glad you're back Ant.  Are you sorted with the orthotics now?  I've never had them myself but know it can take a good bit of tweaking to get them right.

I still have my pink sony clock radio I got for my 13th birthday.  Its been by my bed ever since.  And also the space invaders game I got about the same time.

Wonder how DS2 got on. image

  • I love my vinyl and can't abide it when my kids get their ipods and try to play hissy tinny crap through weeny speakers. It sounds like the rubbish you get when you've been put on hold by the dentist's receptionist. One daughter even plays her stuff through the mono speaker in the laptop. I was so frustrated that I went to the HiFi shop and bought a proper docking station that linked through the decent stereo. It's never used. I thought I'd educated them.

Bed? yeah, good idea, especially if I want a decent run tomorrow.

  • Dr Dre beats headphone are supposed to be really good quality Blisters although very expensive. The technology is also incoporated into some HP laptops and HTC phones to give a better sound for the reasons above. I do agree, but can't afford to support his theory!

You might want to check that KR. I had it, but it disappeared. Presumably because it was too old. If there's a way to stop old things vanishing please do share it!

  • We've still got some Olympic coverage on "tape" Speedy, only seems to delete when the box is full.

Dance music, Kylie AND Metallica! Quite an eclectic mix there KR!
  • Hmm, my Sky+ box is nowhere near full, but stuff seems to disappear after a couple of months.

    Has DS2 returned from bootcamp?

Nice to see you doing your bit for Jantastic Ant, you film star! Are you setting up the Consistently Consistant sub 3:15 again?
  • Good to hear from Ant - hope everything is going well for you.

All this talk of gramophones makes me feel very nostalgic - I've still got my vinyl collection easily to hand so that whenever Mrs L and I fancy a romantic meal I can dig out some Billy Bragg and Half Man Half Biscuit. image

    Fingers crossed for DS2.

Appreciate Minni's generosity in April - luvvly jubberly bubbly

13 off road miles for me this morning - jacket and gloves, but still wearing shorts. Having said that it was a tad chilly and I had to ask elder Lorenzito to undo my laces when I got back as they'd frozen solid thanks to breaking the ice on a few ankle deep puddles towards the end of the run. Good preparation for tomorrow's XC race and next week's Brutal.

  • Blisters - StReaming -(although i do steaming quite regular too). Spotify (or  napster or others)- download it onto your PC and your i phone and there you have it. I can presently dial up any song I want and listen to it instantly. virtually every song by every artist ever recorded a few clicks away. Stick it through a connector into your hi fi or put it into your docking station or buy a sonos wifi speaker or just get some decent headphones and you are pretty much done. There is a subscription version and a free version. Napster is free I think.  The future is already hereimage. Just freesat here - 57 channels and nothin on..

6 last night and 6 this am all at around 8mm - binned long run due to a ratlly chest - have way round coughed up a lung but ok .

  • No Sky in our house either - iPlayer is more than sufficient. Talking of the BBC, who's everyone voting for on Sports Personality of the Year. I'm torn between Wiggo, Jess Ennis and Mo but I also heard an interview with Nicola Adams the other day and she was just fab. Would love it if she won!!!

All this talk of cycling long distances has got me salivating at the prospect of getting my bike out again post VLM.

Have also just signed up for my first ever Sportive - the 90 mile Surrey Sussex Scramble at the beginning of June. Might be coming to TR and Keir for some hints and tips.

  • 90m through Surrey and Sussex will presumably be somewhat hilly - sounds like a great outing.

Follow up on XC spikes as recommended by PMJ/Joolska - first outing this morning, much easier to run in, PB & 3rd place at Parkrun.  Spikes are the future, highly recommended if you're sliding around in the mud this winter

  • No Apple products in our house, I have a totally (totally) irrational dislike of all things apple.

6 miles easy, around 9mm pace. The niggle in the calf is in the background, but hopefully under control. 16 planned tomorrow.

  • Bit of a tough day at Blaise cross-country after the best part of 2 weeks without running: 33rd and 6th scorer (aka 1st for the B team) is a bit off where I should have finished, but the good news is the neck is recovered even if the cold lingers on. At least I can begin to do some training again now to get back to where I should be!

  • MinniMinni ✭✭✭

Nice parkrun Poacher and congrats on the pb.

Glad your neck is on the mend Jools. I wonder if your neck was connected to your cold - viral?  Well done on the xc.

I've had a great week of training and feeling really motivated but have now hit a brick wall [of ice].  Set out this morning on the lanes but the ice was too thick to run on.  Just attempted it again after the sun has been out all day and its no better.  Tried the main road but its a sheet of black ice. image  We're forecast snow tonight on top of this so I doubt I'll get my 15 in tomorrow either.  image

    Hi all,

haven't read back yet other than saw something earlier this morning about whether I had made it back from Bootcamp. Had problems logging in this morning so couldn't respond. Sorry, but will have a read tomorrow when I have a bit more time.

Bootcamp was brilliant. Lots of great people, a lot of fun and good to meet some people that I've spoken to on these forums.

The two track sessions were good although doing the 5k TT straight after lunch wasn't ideal. This was the first time I've done anything below 7mm since I fell off my pike in march so it was a bit of a shock and I, probably, ran a bit too conservatively early on expecting everyone to come back to me having gone off too fast - they hadn't and didn't so finished well down but in the time I inteneded to run. I know I'm not fast at the moment but have been keen to concentrate on building up the base and for once not worrying about speed yet. It's been the right thing to do even if it does cost me a place in the next stage.

No point in compromising my plans for what is, afterall, a long shot to get in the final 5!

As far as I'm concerned, and until I hear differently, I'm running Halstead on 12 May 2013 with a target of 3:14:xx.

Can see some good running has gone on and will comment tomorrow. Thanks for all the good wishes!

    For 'pike' read 'bike' image

  • Aw, I had visions of you falling off a fish DS2.

XC for me too. The North Mids league must time their races to match whatever league Jools runs in! Seeing as we have no team I didn't feel the need to kill myself, just using it for training. I took the first lap easy, the second lap nearly as easy and only pushed on in the second half of the third lap. Three trips through the bog but only twice up the hill as the first lap was slightly shorter. I was overtaking from start to finish, and not a soul came passed me, which is always a nice feeling. The hill is my secret weapon. I took 3 girls on it on the last lap. Finished 18th, which is passable for this league. I do think there were more 'speedy' girls on the start line today. I failed to stop my watch, but it looks like I pressed lap instead, so I calcuate I ran 3.66 miles (6k ish) in 24.08. That's HM pace, so an improvement on the last one.

Comically, our local super speedy lady Juliet Potter (was Doyle but is back to her maiden name now) chose to run in the men's race rather than with the ladies. At first I thought she must have missed the start and elected to join them rather than miss out on a run, but it turns out she has special dispensation. Presumably because no other lady in the north Mids can get close to her. I'm not sure what her finish position was, and I doubt it will show in the results, but she beat every single man from my club over the 10k course.

Still enough to get onto the Jantastic video. Are we doing consistently consistent sub 3:15 again or ganging up with Minni's team (I prefer the latter).

  • Dilemma! My local parkrun has a team too. I rather enjoyed the rivalry last year between the Consistently Consistents and Team Minni though.

  • Hey DS2 - good to meet you yesterday! I agree that the 5k time trial wasnt best timed I.e. straight after lunch. I didn't t eat as I thought it might not stay down and was therefore low on energy. I thought we 'brought up the rear' rather well image

Good luck and let me know if you get through!
  • We run in the Gwent League.  Who knew that Gwent extended to Bristol (it was a home fixture today)?  Sadly, it turns out I ran MP today and was only 8th scorer, because there were 2 new fast ladies I'd forgotten about.

  • MinniMinni ✭✭✭

I prefer to think of you falling off a pike DS2!

Well done today Speedy!  I'm making my NEHL debut two weeks today for my second claim club.  Apparently I start it in the slowest group as a first timer.  Not that I'm complaining!

You are all more than welcome to join Team Minni.   After all we were the winning team last year!  image

But I must warn you -  I am a hard taskmaster!  You can only miss a run if I receive a written letter from your mother with a valid excuse. Stubbed toes, feeling sick, hamster has died etc doesn't work with me.  I, and the rest of the team, demand commitment and nothing less from everyone.   We're in it to win it. image

    ...

But of course its all just a bit of fun! image

Seriously though it did really get us all out the door in all weathers and during all illnesses last year.  Mustn't let the team down.

And since Ant is now (actually we was before too) a MT star I'd love to have him on my team!

  • Minni - I don't know how well the orthotics will work - maybe it's the placebo effect. What does seem to be working miracles is the knee strap-thing I bought and means I can walk normally-ish. Did 6 miles this morning with the last 2kms @ 6:30mm, and all appears to be well. 10 miles tomorrow.

    **REASONABLY IMPORTANT**

Right, shall I set up the Jantastic team again? If so, are you happy with the name (The Consistently Consistent Sub-3:15 Team)? Seems a shame to change it. Let me know what you think.

I make do with the iPlayer, and still use cassettes in my car. I'm thinking I should buy a turntable now they have MP3 attachments, but how to get all those vinyl discs over here from my Mum's house? Lorenzo, you're the closest, maybe you could pop round there, grab them and bring them over here in a van? There's a good chap.

Super jealous of the XC action. Really wanted to have a go at it this year. I've even been eyeing up "off-road porn" on inov8's website. Sigh.
