  • Based on the initial pre-requisite given by RW that the entrants should be registered forumites (and from that I rather naively understood that to mean "have actually posted for a bit and are not simply jumping on the bandwagon") I have been able to cast two votes only.

I wish you all well but I can't help being sad that there are not more names on that list that we regulars are more familiar with.image

  • helen - wow - that must be a tough job. liking the sound of triathlon but need to learn how to ride a bike ist
may put that on my list to santa ...
  • Jane - don't bother learning how to ride! I didn't and I still made it to the end! image
  • Liverbird - seriously though the last bike i had was a 3 wheeler !
  • Oh - in that case - i'll be fine then
i've amassed quite an enviable lycra collection in the past year image

Cycling's the easy bit (except for clipless pedals when you start).

She's not kidding! Mr LB's car still has the dent in where I crashed straight into it....image

  • Do you often cycle in the kitchen?
  • I started my clipless pedal adventure in the conservatoryimage
  • I started mine in the bathroom!!  image
  • Would my trusting mountain bike do the trick? I'm guessing probably not...
  • Bexie - at Nantwich people do sprints on SHOPPERS.image
  • Nantwich tri is great fun.  Can't wait till May. image
  • Liverbird- that sounds like my kind of race! I could stock my basket full of goodies...
  • Hi Soup - I'm originally from the Nantwich Area. Just had a look at the website and looks interesting. Do they do the swim at Nantwich Swimming Pool? At the back of mind, I've always fancied doing a triathlon. I'm seriously thinking about it for next year after seeing this. I know I can do the run and the bike, it's just the swimming I need to work on…
  • linky thing for latest nantwich thread

Swim is in the outdoor brine pool.   Free camping the night before.  Novice friendly.  Loads of Pirates = lots of beer.  What more do you want??image

  • i'm also frightened by the prospect of the swim leg in triathlons..  get them out the way, thats the way i look at it.  the nantwich tri swim is in the outdoor brine pool.  its a heated pool.  good for those who like heated pools.
  • my votes are in. good luck to you all, not just in this competition but with your future running.
  • Re clips and cleats - I've just invested in a new (racer!) bike to take me from London to Paris next year (although I might just take the train on marathon weekend) and am taking it out this weekend for the first time to practise (a) having my feet fixed to pedals and (b) bending down so close to the ground. I'm afraid all the blood will rush to my head and I'll fall off, but take my bike with me because of aforementioned fixed feet.

Any tips for the novice racer biker / fixed footer / bender overer? Aside from keeping out of your way? Happy to practise in my kitchen / bathroom if need be.
  • Morning all, the coffee pot is on image

Only another couple of days in limbo to go

  • Morning USB!

I am on my second cuppa. image

  • For anyone who was unlucky in selection ... you have a second chance !!
  • Moraghan,

I think that you do have a valid point about base training....but with all the respect in the world I think you should be encouraging people and commending them on even thinking about entering a marathon.  Yes it is a big deal and the distance needs to be respected but you only have to look at all the disabled runners and blind runners etc that run to really get a feel for what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.  I actually feel incensed that you diss people on here by saying that if they dont run over 35miles a week and 5 times that you won't vote for them.  Maybe you should have considered putting your money where your mouth is and entering yourself.  These people have been shortlisted for a reason. period.  they have something special and people believe in them.  Maybe you are an amazing runner....maybe not but like RR said everyone starts somewhere and regardless of where that is a marathon is just as much about the willingness to succeed and mental toughness as about base training.  I ran NY marathon this year - my first and was in a&e the week before with a penicilin allergy being sick for 4 solid days depleted all my carbs, I also trained this year whilst having a serious shoulder injury from a skiing accident in February. You may have thought that I shouldnt have done it...some weeks I couldnt run as I had had anaesthetic and sterioid injections. The thing is though I did it and it was the most amazing and brilliant experience of my life.  My time was just over 5 hours - yes not what I wanted or am capable of if I were 100% fit but I was supported by an amazing team of physios and specialists all who told me I had to carry on and do it as you need a focus.  so please consider us newbies (I have only been running just over a year) and actually give people credit.

I like the word incensed and it always increases the enjoyment of it when written by an apparent bellend.  That way it's both satisfying and surprising.

Thanks for your post.  Well, I say 'thanks', what I really mean is 'good God woman'.

There can only be three reasons for so wildly missing the reasoning behind what I wrote and misreading my intentions for writing it:

    1)  You walk around in a permanent state or paranoia / insecurity ready to interpret anything written as a perceived slight (you'll like it on here).

    2)  You are simple (you'll like it on here).

    3)  You are quite witty and your post is an amusing parady of the sort of reverse snobbery we sometimes get on here (you'll like it on here).

Please let me know which it is so I can reply accordingly.  Or maybe one of the nice folk on here can explain it to you in the meantime.

  • At the risk of walking into a shitstorm, isn't it up to Moraghan to determine his own criteria for who he intends to vote for? I explained my reasons for only casting two votes earlier in the thread. I object to RW putting so many new posters through to the vote when they had stated in THEIR rules that you should be "registered forumite". Rather naively, I took this to mean that they might consider some more regular contributors....image

I have since cast a vote for someone relatively new as they are making a concerted effort on the forums to become a regular member and they've made me laugh more than once and I thought I would like to support them.

But it's up to individuals to decide, surely?

    absolutely

I think I voted in four categories, as I quite liked the sound of some folk and like their posts

Moraghan - you do make me laugh, I only wish I'd been on the ball when you started your coaching forumites thing
