  • DD - you are really flying

Barry - very quick. Still got speed even after the marathon.

Minni - did you properly go arse over tit?

Freemers - hope the heating sorts itself soon.

Trendy 5 on the icy lanes this morning. My friend rang me yesterday and told me a woman had been serioulsy assaulted where I normally run. For the first time in ages I was a bit nervous today image

  • AA -  Very worrying, you take care out there.

DD - Impressive running, you have been hitting some quick paces recently.  What's the target for the mara?

Freemers -  Thanks, I'll have a think about targets and put them on Jantastic.

  • DD - blistering pace. Nice

AA - bloody hell, what a nightmare. At least you should be able to show them a clean pair of heels.

Jantastic - that's come around again has it. I will have to investigate. TBH I haven't listened to MT for months now.

It's my 5x1000 repeats tonite. I'm going to do them off 2min recoveries and aim for sub 4mins for each of them. I'm not sure what effect my 2x10 mile cycle commute will have on them...

  • Thanks Merry Carrotmass, I love Durham so it might be a perfect excuse to travel south on saturday morning to sample the bacon sandwich and any christmas markets.....and not forgetting the park run!

I work in the medical profession and I didnt even realise that it was possible to get blood poisioning from a paper cut.....I guess I better start taking somethings more seriously from now on!

Hope your ok minni, i slipt on black ice on sunday, all i could think of was not causing any injuries to hault my marathon training before its even begun. I was a nightmare to live with last year for 4 months....think I might be even worse this time round.

What marathons are everyone entering next year?

  • AA- oh, that's not good.  Do you tend to run in the evening/ morning?  I always work under the assumption that surely all the psychos are asleep at 5.30am so it's much safer... image Not sure if there's any truth in it...

Ant- good luck with the intervals.  I am trying to decide if I'm looking forward to doing them again or notimage

Sarah- it's VLM and Berlin for me next year.

  • Ive heard loads of good reports on Berlin, its supposed to be a fabulous run. I did the big 25k there this year and that was amazing, running through brandenburg gates was fabulous.

AA - scary indeed.  I used to be really nervous about running on the roads myself - never worried about being out on the hills though.  Over the past couple of years I've got much braver and now even go on the lanes myself at night.  I am aware that at the moment I am running the same routes, at the same time, every evening but I don't have much choice.

No injuries after my fall, which ended up as a groovy hip slide!

. Mini you don't have any excuses, Morag gone soft on you?

Thanks DD I think he must have read that because I've now got a killer of a killer sesh to do tonight.  image image image

Sarah - VLM and Newcastle for me.  What about you?

  • Barry: 3-15 to 3-20...... Inshallah. Of course the wheels may fall off big style!

  • Welcome Sarah - definitely, very nice running through Brandenburg gates. Spectacular place.

Minni hope you're okay after the fall. Is it a resistance band with handles, or just the rubber loop type? Either are really good, use them most weeks for specific things but you can do whole body. Monster Walk for your legs, and ITB is good.

Merry Carrotmas, Black Keys awesome, enjoy! Best gig of the year for me.

AA, speak to Gazelle about "running porn". Thats what her husband called the RW forum since it kept her so occupied image
Be careful on your run if nutters around, do you carry a panic alarm?.

DD definitely getting faster. 27 seconds off - due to the cut back week?

Mr Zuvai & kcs you definitely up for Thunder Run?

O4S what do you wear layer wise for ultras in winter? Looking for xmas presents. Got that montane waterproof but need maybe a jacket underneath plus a base layer, ideally not £100-200 ones. Noticed a helly hansen lifa base layer.

Its horrible wet and cold here. intervals tonight maybe... thinking of whimping out of XC again on Saturday.. need to get some long runs in.

  • I run @8:30 most mornings and its the only route I can do a few miles on the pavement before I hit the quieter lanes and the 4x4s other wise I'm straight out on the busier lanes which is just as dangerous. I had definitely got braver. A few years ago I wouldn't have run down the canal on my own for miles but now it doesn't bother me.

It's so cold here today I can't warm up.
  • Afternoon All,

A fashionable 5 mile r** (are we allowed to use that word now?) for me with the club tonight, although i have worse DOMS from Sunday's 5 than after VLM!!!!image

What's the format then for Jantastic, as i did it very haphazardly on my lonesome last year and couldn't really see the point?image I think i need to find the time to go onto MT to understand it better.

Lastly, has anyone heard from Cooks after his Valencia marathon, or have i missed his race report???image

  • I've signed up for Jantastic Team Minni. Looks like there's only 3 of us so far. Is that because you have to log your predicted runs before you can see the team? Oompa, select our team, we get pretty competitive so if you sign up Minni will be on your back to make sure you do then runs and log them inimage
  • I've just signed up as well.image

  • AA - With my recent track record of injuries, she may have to run my miles for me!image

  • whats jantastic team?

Your all braver than me, I dont dare go out on the roads when its dark on my own so I tend to do alot of my training on a treadmil after work. Ive recently joined a local running club but its still a struggle to get to the club runs in time after work. I do look forward to the weekends when I can get out (although it does make it twice as hard getting back on the treadmil afterwards).

    Anyone live in York?

I have a place in VLM but I have also got through to the final 22 for the ASICS 26.2 which is two weeks before. I dont think I will stand a chance of getting through to the final 5 after meeting the other finalists, but least im still in it. Which either one I manage to run, im aiming for a sub 3:30!

  • I've signed up for Jantstic - heaven only knows why!  Playing safe and going for 4 runs a week plus ultras [can't really count as runs]

FRC:  HH lifa is a safe bet, I also like North Face base layers, very thin but warm. I usually put a light cycling fleece on top and then something like the Montane

    Sarah:  VLM for me

I run on the roads by myself as being safer than city parks, but BA doesn't like me doing it very much [although has long since given up trying to stop me]

  • AA: that's scary image. I keep telling myself that I'm ok running first thing because the bad people will come out in the evening and not in the morning...

Sarah: fab news being on the Asics shortlist image. Never say never: we may all vote for you as you are our forum buddy image.

  • PS: luckily no video evidence from the xmas party image. Not everyone has submitted their photos yet though... altough I'm pretty sure by time this happened everyone was too far gone to take pics!

  • thankyou SBC, although I am only a new member after learning about these forums last friday. I didnt even know they existed and now im hooked. My husband gets a glazed look about him when ever I mention the R word so its nice to talk to others that are just as mad about running as myself.

Have a feeling that its going to make my working day less productive though!

  • Chick - I keep telling myself that noone like that would do that round here....and that's now put a spanner in the works image
  • thanks O4S (sorry Scrooge / Bah humbug... excellent name). HH and some sort of light warm jacket with the Montane it is. Cotswold shop later to have a nose.

Oh, you're never going to let me live this one down... image Of course you can use the R** word. Minni did take my comment very out of context.. I was paraphrasing someone. A split can just be the big dessert you had at lunch or something bad done to your trousers by mistake image

Chic, give it time about the photos. Minni is really getting into the Homeland bugging / espionage thing now.

Sarah, have we done the whole, tell us about yourself, your running history so far? Current PBs?

  • Hi Sarah and welcome. VLM for me with an outside chance of New York but may not happen as Brolish's trials and tribulations with this year's event have me questioning whether it's a good idea.

AA - Sorry, missed your earlier post re your run route... Be safe out there and keep changing route and time of run if you can.image

I don't need to worry... The orange face and white eyebrows scares the living sh*t out of any would-be muggers every time!!!image

  • Bliddy gas leak...still no hot water and no run therefore. Oh well, not going to stress about it...will get some miles in tomorrow hopefully.

Welcome Sarah - you are in the right place for a sub 3.30 image. VLM and (possibly) something in the autumn for me.  Jantastic is a "spring motivation" campaign run by Marathon Talk (worth listening to their weekly podcasts if you've not come across them before) - you basically set goals for January, February and March based on the number of runs you're going to do each week, and then you get points for sticking to your goals.  We have a team as there is a "no prizes" competition running, just for a bit of fun...so sign yourself up...but only if you promise to log all your runs otherwise Minni will be on the warpath image  So what's your running background / marathon experience so far?

AA - sounds scary. Panic alarm not a bad idea if you're worried.

  • HHOompa- not to worry, I'm not doing NY next year so you're safe.image

  • Bro - what happened with that in the end did you all get a guarenteed free entry or are they not compensating anyone?
  • They're still pondering what to do... I sort of lost interestimage
  • Hahah, fit running cat , no one has asked yet but im more than happy to share, although I have been advised to set a thread up tomorrow as part of the competition so everyone is able to grill me and find out more about me.

Basically I was sort of brought up with running...both my parents ran/raced and use to drag me with them. I thought they were alittle mad and it didnt catch on until I left uni. I started going to the gym after uni to keep fit and hated everything but the treadmil. From there I did more and more running and less of everything else until i became hooked. I love running now and really couldnt imagine my life without it. I did my first 10k 28 months ago and have done several since. My current PB for a 10k is 43:21 (leeds abbey dash) but i feel that I could do better as I enjoyed it far too much. My half PB at the moment is 1:35:46 (worksop half) and my marathon PB (only marathon ive done) is 3:47:45 (VLM this year). I had originally aimed for a sub 3:30 but due to getting whooping cough I couldnt train throughout feb. Have I bored you yet?? Im a member of two running clubs, the first Maltby (60+ miles from where I live) are my first claim - they do some fabulous trips and are the club my parents were in. My second claim are knavesmires but I have only just joined them. I had joined them hoping that I might make some of the club runs and training sessions (rather than having to go to the gym and run on the treadmil) but at the moment ive only been to a few sessions and done one cross country for them due to work.

I know that you all know each other well and that this will make you repeat things but could you tell me alittle more about you guys?

HHH, NY would be amazing, but I guess with what happended this year it may be impossible to get a place next year. I would still try though!

I cant believe how many people are doing VLM, its great - will you all be starting at the good for age start?

Jantastic sounds fun, I will have a look at it tonight if I get time thankyou

  • MinniMinni ✭✭✭

Sarah - sub 3:30 definitely within your grasp.  Look forward to reading your thread when its up and running.  Remember if you don't get through in the end there is also the Forum Six, which is also a great scheme to help you get your goal.  This thread was set up 2 years ago when I was chosen as the sub 3:30 contender with DD mentoring me.  Most of the others on here came over from the sub 3:30 thread that had been running for a few years so we all are there or there about.

Yes, all the ladies are on the green!

The most important thing about Jantastic is to achieve your goals, that should be challenging but realistic.

Must dash - I need to do the killer.....

No - VLM isn't great. It's a horrible race. Probably the worst marathon I've ever done twice.

  • Anyway - tonight was 15 minutes out and back with a small mountain in the middle to climb. Just missed the hailstorm too image
