  • as per usual work has gotten in the way...I managed a run and a swim this week and that's it.  Although, I did quit my job on tuesday so that probably explains why I haven't had a moments peace.

  • MC - fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

JP  sorry you're struggling, but yay for a dog named Boo to encourage you to get out on the road (or trail) again.

Just fairly small run and cycle sessions this week so far.  Weekend schedule is going off Fink though so I can do a little sportive instead of the scheduled bike session.  Weather's looking good, so should be a nice ride.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

  • Hope you're OK Pete.

Speedy recovery vibes for you MC.

I've never been spinning before, but I get the impression its benefits are heavily determined by the instructor you get?
  • seal pritty much althrough if your not happy you can always rank it up when they arn't watching and make it harder for yourself.

DS this weekend should be fun. image

Drat and double drat, I'm on the injury bench, sudden increase in running has lead to a left hip problem, trying to book physio.

Oh yeah. More money and less responsibility, what's not to like? And a transfer to Houston next year. Do they do triathlons in houston?

  • Yay Cake, I'm looking forward to it, should be a nice start to my year And great to meet up again.

Pete, that sounds cool.  Houston sends me back to memories of John Michelle Jarre and his 'Rendevous in Houston' concert, great energy - I hope it works out well for you.

That's unlucky Ali, fingers crossed you're off the bench soon.

    I have swum.
I have cycled nearly 24 miles in the sunshine and surprised myself with an average speed of 12.5 mph, so all the spinning classes and turbo work have been worth it.

    MC, get well soon.
Alibear, get to the physio and do the exercises you will no doubt be given.
Pete, good luck in new job, Triathlon is global, no excuse not to do one.

  • ooh pete that is exciting!! On the fatman to ironman thread there is someone called Ironyank who seems to find lots to enter. You will be going from one extreme of weather to another!!

  • EP - yes, enter the Bosworth Half, build up sensibly and on the day decide whether you think you can run it all or do a run/walk strategy.

tomorrow I will be doing run/walk, and using Jeff Galloway type strategy which means 30 secs run 30 secs walk, which others will think ridiculous maybe but it does tend to average out at about my continuous running pace anyway but does mean that I don't fatigue (too much) and can do the distance, I just have to remember to ignore what anyone else might say and do what my garmin is telling me to!

It is considering what to wear that is bothering me! I think it will need to be shorts, t-shirt and sun cream. although there is a chilly wind, but I think I might get too warm in tights and a long sleeve top

  • ooh, could wear my pirate arm warmers!!!

EP - might be worth you looking up the Jeff Galloway website if you want to look at a good run/walk strategy. That is going to get me round a full marathon in 5 weeks (gulp) - although I wouldn't say that I have actually stuck to his plan, but have used his run/walk intervals and it has helped me ramp up the mileage without injury (touch wood). The short intervals definitely keep the hr down and makes the whole thing a lot more manageable. People do qualify for Boston with his method, so it is not just for slow people! But definitely good for those of us that are (ehem) a little older and more injury prone!

    Hi gang,

At Turin airport waiting for our flight back. Had intermittent WiFi where we were staying so have read bits and bobs but can't remember nowt now.

Alibear - hope you've managed to get Physio booked.

I managed to learn to snowboard but my hip is as bad as ever and after sitting for long periods I walk like an old lady so no half mara for me tomorrow. image will need to find a Physio close to work so it'll be easier to get to. But gutted as I've trained OK, after diagnose I'll be looking for another half to enter soon.

  • oh mikasa that is a shame.

Thanks MC - will be my first DNS. image
  • oh Mikasa, that's not good.  Hope you find a closer physio, all that training isn't for nothing remember, it all adds up.

I took my bike out for my local hill lap this morning, first run out of the year.  Oh.  My.  Goodness.  I had forgotten what hills were.  My legs hurt, my lungs hurt, even my arms hurt.

I did a few lengths in the pool on saturday as well during a family swim, oddly it takes about 5 lengths before my breathing becomes calmer and less laboured.  I need to try and get in that zone more quickly.

  • Aw Mikasa that sucks... Hope things get sorted for you.

Pete - exciting news. Nice change of climate image

I think I've forgotten what weekends off are. Have to book them for events, then end up doing a long stretch beforehand. Next weekend is the 'very hilly' Longleat Half. Undulating by all accounts is a Cake understatement! Bring it on! image

  • mikasa - if it is any consolation I have had my fair share of DNS through illness and injury, it is a bugger but better than going and making things worse

finished the Retford half today, very tough because the temperature was 19 degrees - not exactly what I have been training in! Anyway, stuck to 30sec run/30sec walk and that only got interrupted at water stations when I stopped to fill up my bottle, and ran the last few hundred metres without stopping to walk. I did the first 5 miles in 1 hour which I was really pleased with, but I did slow down a bit after that, mainly due to the heat I think. I did overtake a fair few people, which is a first for me image finished in 2:46 so just over 12:36 mins per mile - I am happy with that. Don't think I could have done double the distance though but then it isn't like I tapered either as I did 15 miles last week

Mikasa, hope you get your injury sorted out soon.

My HM became a 10k, very warm but comfortable. I did run 2 mins walk 1 minute. On mile six my back/hip muscles tightened up then spasmed so had to walk, Got to the 10k timing mat and then the water station where I made the decision to stop. It would have taken me another 1.5 to 2 hours to walk back to the finish and no guarantee that I would not have further problems, I was not even walking properly. So sweeper bus back.

I am happy that I did miles in 12.36,12.54, 12.48, 13.08, and 13.06 before the last one with more walking in it.

  • well done steady, and a wise decision to stop and not risk making things worse for yourself, it is hard to do though

I have just looked at the official results, my 10k time was 1:24:16, there were loads of DNFs and I was the only one from my club to do it.

  • Nice going Steady, I am never that sensible, I have continued playing Rugby through a torn hamstring hoping it would get better only to limp off and have a month off through injury.

What a lovelly weekend, I was on a training course but managed an 8 miler home, I sold my bike and guitar to fund my new Boardman Road Pro, pick it up on Saturday morning yay, the wife, neighbours and most of the street are especially happy seeing the guitar go, some people just dont appreciate thrash metal

Steady - very sensible indeed. Generally I think women are more sensible than men, we don't have to do that whole bravado thing.

I didn't really have any other choice than DNS, if I can't walk properly, I'm unlikely to run any better. Have booked an initial consultation with a physio for tomorrow, £15 pounds for 15 mins. Not sure if I should've just gone the whole hog straight away. Kind of feels like a trapped nerve/pulled muscle all in one. It's close to work but will have to drive and then probably book a proper session as well. It's starting affect my back now as well as I walk funny and gets stiff after sitting down. So rubbish! Hopefully have some answer tomorrow. The reason I haven't gone via my doctor is that I don't have a doctor at the new place yet and who knows how long you have to wait to get referred. However, depending if this is a quick fix or long term thing, might still need to do that...

Hope everyone not injured are making most of the lovely weather we have atm. image

  • Congrats on the new bike JP, I hope you have many happy miles on it.  I'm sure the neighbours will soon realise what they're missing music wise.

mikasa, fingers crossed the physio is able to offer some reassuring words tomorrow.

I tried to take my cycling forward a little more and did a teeny sportive instead of my scheduled length ride over the weekend, was good apart from my lower back wasn't happy so I need to work out why that is.  On the bright side my saddle seemed reasonably friendly towards me, so a step in the right direction there at least.

  • ((((((Mikasa))))))

Hope your ok chuck there will be other half's.

Did the sportive yesterday as well I got lost a few times after some joker must have removed a few of the sign's for the course but still enjoyed it. DS some of those roads where a little lumpy in places might have had an effect. there was some right pot holes.

JP surely you can't tempt us with bike porn and not give pictures? image
