  • Woo...good going buttercup. But surely you're a happy buttercup?

    Good luck mc as well.

  • well done buttercup!

DD - there are swimathons around the country next month http://www.swimathon.org/

there are also open water 'big swim' events around the country in the summer

just a swim today, Retford half tomorrow image

  • Thanks i will look at the swimathon site.

Managed a steady indoor bike session on Friday and then had a lazy (on exercise front) weekend.  Today i have had a lunch run in the pouring rain and this evening is a swim session which i am looking forward to.

What events are people planning in doing this year?

  • well, I swam for 30 lengths today without feeling nauseus or anything!  while not a great feat in of itself, but for me I'm amazed.  It was the first time since last April's triathlon when I first got this problem.  I've changed my breathing slightly and it seemed to make a difference.  Let's see what I'm like next week...but here's hoping.

Last nights storms have been replaced by blue skies and sunshine...nice!

  • Peteinthehills pleased to hear that you had a good swim and 30 lengths is still 30 lengths.

We got out bidded on ebay last night for a Elite Crono Fluid Elastogel last night so will try again tonight.

Swimming last night was really good but running today my legs were like lead!

  • ooh, I went back to the pool to see if yesterday was a fluke and it wasn't.  I knocked 2 minutes of my sprint tri distance swim...I am excited.  I am not going to be last out of the pool this year....maybe....

I really should get on me bicycle otherwise all this swimming will go to waste.

  • well done pete!

I have nothing all week because of a cold image hoping to go swimming tomorrow night though

  • Hello everyone,

Well done everyone on there training plans, not alot going on in mind at the moment. Chest infection is now in its 3rd week and destroying my training plan. I hope i have lost too much time

  • hi

BS - that sounds bad - have you seen a dr?

I am feeling better so a slow run this morning. Swimming was cancelled because of heating issues, so I did a turbo session instead

  • Yeah got some drugs last week so starting to clear up now

  • oh that is good, you should be able to start back soon then, but start back slowly!

  • Out on the bike this morning. It was really cold. I was doing fine until I turned in to the wind and nearly came to a dead stop. I guess I need more bike.

Did I mention how cold it was?

  • It was cold Pete! I went out for my interval run in tshirt and shorts and whilst that was fine when I was actively running as soon as I slowed down it was a might nippy!  Interval run today tried for two km each under 5 mins didn't happen first km (of five km run) was 5.19 and fourth km was 4.41mins image but was running top of HR on that fourth one image got a bit light headed and decided to jog rest of run.

Went to see the massage lady who kneeded my glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves - it hurt but not as much as the one after the Outlaw HM tho' image

BS hope you are getting better!

Whoop! Whoop! Pete good going on the swim time image

    Good training everyone else.

  • well done buttercup!

swim and turbo for me today - didn't really have to time to get sorted and cycle outside, lots of family stuff to do.

must get an early night so I can get up early to run tomorrow!

I did masters swim this morning but ran out of time to do a turbo or outside ride, I made gluten free chocolate brownies instead along with getting masses of housework done.

Will do a ride either indoors or out tomorrow before hospital visiting.

  • morning

had a bit of a failure this morning. Hardly slept but still got out of bed at 4 to squeeze a long run into a hectic day (I was lying there awake anyway so may as well) but got 7 miles in, really wasn't enjoying it, was feeling tired and grumpy. Have promised to take the kids swimming then for lunch and really didn't want to be snapping their heads off, so after 7 miles went home, shower, back into bed.

Now, I am supposed to be doing Manchester Marathon on 19 April, the longest run I have done so far has been the Barcelona Half a month ago. Problem is, I have been plagued by colds etc since xmas, have had a week of good training, then a cold, couple of weeks good, then another cold, so training has really suffered, specially the long runs. I need to decide whether to DNS Manchester and put more effort and time into cycling as I also have Outlaw half coming up - in something like 2 and a half months (1 June?).

I need to decide this when I am not tired and irrational though!

  • Hey Mathschick,

What's your current fitness level like? and what do you want to get from the Manchester marathon? and is there a defer option?

If you're looking to smash your pb, I'd drop it and see if you can defer.  If you're happy to bimble round, then bimble on.  I've only done one marathon and it put me off exercise for 4 months...I know you did one last year...how did you feel afterwards?

I can add rainy and cloudy to the weekends "its' blinkin' cold" weather report...even though I couldn't be R'sed, I still went to the pool...and was over confident and screwed up the first 4 lengths, before getting in to my stride. Can I have a stride in swimming?.  I realised that I don't warm up for swimming...I wonder if I should?

  • oh i don't warm up really when i swim really other that doing a good few lengths.  I not sure if it is stride but i have a flow and heaven help if someone gets in my way and spolis it!!

This weekend was a no go for me as it was hubbies birthday and mothers day so little time for anything else.  I have been running today and swimming later.

Do you think doing drill session on a monday ngiht and then a gentle swim on a Tuesday morning would be too much?  I also need to try and cycle alot more as that is lacking and the tirathlon i am going to do it hilly.  wish i had known before i signed up for it!

DD - I used to the do my clubs swim session wed evening and then a training swim Thursday morning, an apart from the overpowering chlorine smell it all went well. image

I'm on track so far but with 7 months to go I've got a lot more sessions to do yet.

MC, if your A race is Outlaw half and you can defer the Manchester marathon I would defer the marathon, Your body is saying that it can only do so much at the moment.

Pete, I like it when coach says easy 50m or whatever as "easy" is my swim all day long speed, then I can do a little bit faster or a 25m sprint speed. Warm up 100m can be a mixture as I tend to go too fast for the first 25m then realise my error and slow down.

Dilly Dally, I would think that a tough drill session then a gentle recovery swim in the morning would be OK. Don't panic over the bike, try to get 2 sessions of each sport in a week then add extras whenever you can but do not forget to have a rest day.

My bike ride ended up as a turbo session and even that I gave up on when the battery went flat on the mp3 player with just 10 minutes to go, but I did complete 1 hour and 20 minutes..

  • Oh dear MC, hope you find your mojo. I think we forget how demanding events are because we spend all our time talking to others on here who make it sound easy. Outlaw and Manch are both biggies and need lots of preparation so perhaps they are a bit close.

    Fab swims BC and Pete

Steady - i like your swim speeds!

Did a tri training morning on Saturday and tried very short bike/ run/ bike/ run/ bike. Was fab at nailing shoe change and mounting, dismounting, racking etc quicker.

  • hi all, thanks for the encouragement image

I think I will see how the next couple of weeks go - if I can get a decent long run in then I can get round Manchester. After last year's marathons (I did 2) I was fine actually.

Decided that maybe it would be better not to do the Monday night spin and insanity sessions - maybe I am doing 2 much x- training. I enjoy it, but it is tiring and means less time at home so more rushing about in general

  • Listen to your body MC, If your tired you must rest, resting is a big part of training, I tend to over rest rather than over train image

I'm slowly getting back into swiming, we've entered the swimathon as a bit of focus, just need to get into running and biking now, the weeks are slipping away.

looking forward to the open water season, I find the pool a bore.

    great training everyone image

  • Went for my first run since being ill over 3 weeks ago with a chest infection.

Only went for a 2 miles run to test the waters. HR rate was a little high for pace and distance but managed the 2 miles in just over 10m30 a mile.

Quite happy i havent gone backwards wit the illness and starting where i left off with pace.

  • Thanks everyone for the swim advice.  I went this morning and i realised just how much i like early morning swims.

It sounds like everyone is right in the swing at the moment.  we got a turbo trainer at the weekend and i am so excited to get it up and going.

SteadyCJ thanks for the advice on cycling.  i was going for at least twice a week so it is good to know i am no the right track.

  • Listen to your body MC. Dont push it

popped along to the pool tonight. Still feel it in my chest. managed a very slow 600m Of drills.

Im so unhappy being under the weather

  • I have had a couple of rest days now and have slept like the dead

BS - just wait till you are better. It is a pain being ill, but no good will come of trying to train while you are ill

Why is it that a few glorious wonderful days of feeling like you are getting fitter, that you are on track and your A race is achievable are swiftly followed by horrible doubts and depression. Or is this just me? General kicks in my direction appreciated, not having trouble with motivation to do the sessions, more  just oh my god what have I signed up for and I can't bear to fail a 2nd time thoughts...

  • Eyes on the finish line AliBear! You know the rules - do everything in your power to get to the run and then it's only a wee run to the end and being able to eat ALL THE THINGS! image You will be fine - line up at the start line with everyone else and keep on going - are you doing Outlaw this year? I will be running or walking depending how broken I feel image feel free to run with me image I will even share my jelly babies....

  • AliBear30AliBear30 ✭✭✭

Buttercup, I'm off to Barcelona this year having not made it to the run a Outlaw my fears are about just getting that far. I think reminders of the sea swim haven't helped, my swimming is getting stronger every year but I haven't swum in the sea yet and a windy day on the lake had me struggling last summer...

I have to get my eating sorted out as I am EASINT ALL THE THINGS already which isn't helping and I'm getting niggles purely because I'm carrying too much weight at the moment.  It' shard to get everything under control isn't it, I can do the training but fail on the eating or I can do the eating but fail on the training or do both of those but fail on the work and family bit.

Mind you , no one said it wold be easy image

Anyone got an ideas for good post work out food that isn't junk food ?
