JW, most 'other' gels are less bulky than SIS (high-5 and powergel off the top of my head), but the reason for this is that they normally need to be taken with water as they are not isotonic. You could always decant the gels into a fuel belt or similar.
Yes anti smoke headphones are a bloody brilliant idea. Scrap the race and work on your Dragons Den proposition - you'll be able to stage your own marathon races and ban those irritating spectators.
Bangers, I was watching the London Marathon the other day on the TV, and loads of people had earphones in. In fact one guy (think it was either Will Young, or Olly Murr), and big cans on.
I'm up to 20 miles in my training, and could not do it without my music to keep me going. Expecting to finish in a rip roaring 5 hours 30. I am doing the 'race' for the event, I do not consider it a race.
Yeh, just tapering off now. I have a 10K tomorrow night. I am very over weight (18 stone 9), but have lost over 2 stone in my training, so hopefully next years time will be a lot better than 5 30
Also, just re-looking at the website you posted, almost all the photographs have someone with headphones. In fact the one two down on the left, has someone with over the ear head phones round his neck.
if it purely a health and safety issue like some people are stating, then does that also exclude runners who are deaf?
the marathons which are completely closed roads such as london dont have the earphones ban, as edinburgh is almost closed roads then i think thats why they might be slightly easy on enforcing the rule.
Sorry to have stirred this subject up. I got the answer to my questoins a while ago and, despite some strong opinions to the contrary, I plan to run with my phones. Playing runkeeper audio cues and music quietly in the background. I'll try not to get in anyone's way
I notice that on the second slide on the EMF website ( link below ) shows an athlete with a set of headphones on, so what is the stance on this, are we to take this seriously ?

What did we do before personal music systems. I don't see how your headphones will block out someones cigarette smoke.

no.
I'd like to see anyone trying to stop me wearing headphones at any race!! If anyone tried to remove me from a race they'd have to catch me first!!
When you pay to enter a race you also tick the box to declare you're responsible for your own actions etc.. so I don't see what the issue is.
I can run with or without music, however, Edinburgh in particular is a pretty boring route at times so music really helps keep pace.
Cougie I'd be glad to run in 'heelies', I do it everyday!
Anyways, live and let live, run and let run I say
Gordon Robb how was your marathon?
