marathon's and snickers

Was just thinking about what some of our favourite sweets used to be called. Snickers were Marathons

Ie. Who still remembers starburst used to be opal fruits?

Any more?

  • Aniseed Twists and Aztec barsimage but they just disappearedimage

M&M's used to be Treets didn't they?

  • Too many unnecessary apostrophes on here.

    Can you spot them children?

  • Pacers, were like opal fruits but mint flavoured.

  • Spangles - square boiled sweets in fruit flavours.

Tutti-frutti - like Skittles but square and the about the size of a Spangle.

Texan bars - orangey chewy centre covered in chocolate.  You'd bite them and then have to pull the bit you'd bitten with your teeth, while the chocolate broke off and fell onto your t-shirt.

Sweet cigarettes - yes, really.  They try to get you young.  These took various forms.  Some were little white candy sticks with a red end.  Others were chews or chocolate wrapped in paper to look like a real fag.  One lot I remember though had a flour type layer between the sweet and the paper and when you blow through them, it simulated smoke.  Classy.  Thankfully that sort of thing is banned now (Nanny State erm, gone sane)

When I was a kid my sister got a peanut stuck up her nose. We gave her some chocolate and it came out a treat.

  • You can still get the sweet cigarettes but they are called candy sticks or something like that.

Anyone remember that yucky green drink Quattro?

Hmmm... the use of the "grocer's apostrophe" in standard plurals is just plain wrong, but I think it's a bit more of a grey matter when it comes to pluralising acronyms.

Interesting discussion about it here.  I tend to go with the idea of leaving it out, e.g. M&Ms rather than M&M's, except in cases where it improves readability, as in the example in the link - mind your p's and q's rather than ps and qs.  But given difference usage guides, CD's, M&M's etc doesn't make me cringe at all compared to apple's...

All I'll say on snack related nostalgia is that Mars bars and Wagon Wheels both used to be bigger.

    LOL Simon-like thatimage
  • I remember Spiderman cigarettes!  They were pear flavour IIRC.  Actually the thing that put me off real cigarettes for ages was when one of the bigger kids let me have a puff when I was six.  Bleurgh!
  • I used to like Maverick chocolate bars. I don't think they changed name though, I think they just disappeared.

Jolly Ranchers, although you can still buy those in America shops over here.

BDB - Aren't those Tutti Frutti still around, maybe called Tooties or something now?

Non sweet related, why did Oil of Ulay become Oil or Olay? And don't even get me started on Jif/CIF. If it ain't broke...!

  • OK Parky -I stand corrected (should know better-lol)image

  • D2D you can still buy riesens from a shop called home bargains for 29p. image Still yummy. image
  • k8greene - i havent seen them in the shops the white choc ones were the best ones used to leave them til last!!!
  • who as a child ate a chewit with the wrapper on??? imageimage
  • I remember Quattro... I used to quite like that.

You can still get tutti fruttis, the bag is smaller and they're not as chewy as they used to be but they're definitely there in the corner shop... purple packet probably near the jelly tots.

Treets and M&Ms are two different sweeties... the makers ditched Treets to make way for M&Ms according to a google search (so it must be true).

Can you still get fruit polos???

  • and Pez!!!! used to love collecting the different machines for the bricks!!
  • You can still get Pez and Mr Tom.  I'll look out for Tuffi-fruity things.

Anyone remember Nutty bars?  Chewy caramel and peanut buttery centre covered in peanuts.  Was in a dark brown wrapper.
