Was thinking about my training for the next couple of weeks... as speed isn't really the issue here, is a major taper worthwhile? Obviously will need to tail off if the final week to make sure legs aren't tired but...
The schedule I'm following suggests 18 miles this weekend and 12 next weekend - was considering upping the length of the final weekend run. Any thoughts - what do you South downs regulars do?
I am not tapering; I am doing 20 miles this week and a 32 mile race the week before. I wouldn’t recommend it though. This a hard race so a taper is with doing. Depending on how much you have been running I would say that 18 then 12 where too much, go for something like 12 and 8. Unless you have been knocking out big mileage like it is nothing.
Going for your hat trick as well Sean G, good luck.
Done 18, 20, 23, 20 for my last few long runs so more than happy with 18 tomorrow. Will see how that feels to see what I do next week... I'm more concerned that i've not got enough hills in, so trying to cram in that bit more milage to make up!.
Will definately ease off in the week before hand to make sure i'm rested.
Hi Kate! I have decided against that southdowns way ultra now. This should be my peak week in terms of mileage and I am totally lacking motivation and I am shattered. I think I over trained anyway I am doing this instead.
Smart2k that looks like some very good mileage you should do well. Apparently speed work is a good substitute for hill training, something to do with your running form being the same when you go up hill and when you sprint. You might want to look into that. Sounds like hard work to me I am going to walk up em!
Worried if I have done enough to get round this one? I have done 2 x 15, 2 x 17 and an 18(all hilly) with my last long run 2 weeks ago, I have had to take a break due to a calf strain which is now fine. I have also been cycling with a 40m hilly ride last weekend, I am off to Brecon for a running/walking wekend. With two weeks to go any advice.......legs feel tired so I don't think cramming a long one in will be beneficial!
I'm no running guru, but that doesn't sound like a carsmash (i've done more distance, but probably not enough hills - there are none near me). Aslo, as you say, not worth cramming a long one in, but I'd certainly be keeping the legs moving once you get back from Brecon. Good luck.
@Mr Guy - phew, am running 5km pb's regulalry at the moment, so hopefully that will help. I'm a big beleiver of walking up hills if you have to though - 9 times out of 10, its quicker overall.
Don't worry about it guys. Mine only came this morning. I've never known there to be a problem with getting the details in time for this event. If it does go wrong though the organisers are brilliantly helpful. I'd give it all next week before you panic.
Had a great weekend walking and running in Black mountains.....bit more confident about South Downs now. Will definately be walking up the hills, I think that is the only way to survive!
Body attack class Tonka Boy? Not sure I want to be running in your vicinity
FC - you'll be fine, you 've almost certainly done enough, walk the hills (most of us do) and be prepared for hot weather (water and sunscreen) as it can be quite exposed. You'll also find, if you didn't know this already, that offroad races tend to be a bit chattier so say hello to everyone as other runners can get you through some bad bits.
Chubster - what is your start group and average pace / expected finish time? If you are anywhere within my pace I'll look out for you. << Hint - I'm a small fat green frog!! >>

Right that's my entry in, it will be my third year in a row!

3rd year in a row for me too.
13.25 miles on the Sunday before (and the one before that!) and then a 5 day taper for me but I am no longer conventional!
