Hi all - did a little 2 miler this morning, having done Paris last weekend. My legs felt tired, like a recovery after a long weekend run - everything in good working order, but just TIRED. Vvvv glad not doing London tomorrow! Love London, but one week betw maras not engough for me!
I have done 3 in 4 weeks and 2 of them were 6 days apart but they were all off road and not raced. The times ranged from 5.15 to 5.52 against a road PB of just under 4.27.
Given that I managed that I think the fact I suffered today having not run a marathon last weekend is lea evidence of something hanging around
i did have numbers for tomorrow dangled under my nose but am very glad today that I resisted
3 weeks later I ran the Halstead marathon, very determined and very disciplined
That's the key, it's being able to work out your strategy in advance and stick to it on the day - I made a mess of my first HM by underestimating race conditions - and listening to someone else's advice and not following my own instincts!
Before I head out for a trott - GOOD LUCK TO ALL DOING VLM
USB: just don't push yourself too hard, see how you feel next week and after your next lsr and then take a view. You have an excellent level of fitness that won't drop away, don't put yourself under too much pressure to do another too soon, relax, chill!!!! (just like me - not that I'm very good at that)!!
Looked at florence marathon in november, looks lovely but trying to get there from Jersey is a nightmare, not to mention extremely expensive!! Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do Jersey, can cope with the 3 mile drag at mile 3, but the 4 mile section at miles 17 - 21 is a nasty bit, hey ho lots of time to practise!!!
Breezy but sunny here, am going out with no direction in mind will just let the legs take me!!
As a newbie am sorry didn't do the polite thing and ask to join in the thread banter, may I stay - please.
Sorry to hear yesterday's run was a bit leaden, USB. I'm keeping off the double figure runs for a bit longer, but had a pleasant 6m in deepest, darkest Lancashire, near my parents' yesterday. I was out burning the midnight oil and dancing for a friend's birthday last night, so it may only be the briefest of trots later today
Going to settle in front of the TV for a bit this morning - hope everyone running has a good day
And on the hydration, PiFi, I don't think I can really help as I got it pretty badly wrong last week too but I did find squeezing my gels into the water bottles helpful when I was feeling nauseous as it meant I didn't have to cope with fuelling separately.
Went out to make 6m, @ 5m bumped into someone who's just moved back to the area after 5 years away - she wanted to chat. . .. "Oh, you're just out for a quick jog are you?" I know that she doesn't understand, so it would seem very rude to be honest, but that was the end of my 6m - could feel that I'd stiffened up to much, so just walked the last mile back. Oh well, 5m more than this day last week.
I'm struggling with gels as I'd found SiS too much for my stomach, so far, the only thing that I can take are Shot bloks. Torq gels have been suggested, but I've only seen people selling them in bulk and I'd rather try one or two first.
PF - I don't there are any rules on etiquette here (except that downright nastiness is not allowed of course). Hope you enjoy the run
Frodo - you spent plenty of time in double figures last week so enjoy the single ones
Jeepers - I've used SiS for a while and have an armband that takes 4 but I have found that the caffeine ones tend to slip out. The fact that it came undone last week when I collided with someone who stopped in front of me has got me thinking about a belt/pouch instead despite the fact that I don't get on with bottle belts. If I went that way I think I'd switch to Shotbloks as I like them but couldn't work out how to carry them in the armband.
Watching TV made me realise I was lucky to be on the blue start 3 years ago. The red one was taking ages to clear.
You need to put in a call to JB, then, Frodo, if you're looking for spare peanut M+M's
Shot Bloks are very difficult due to their size, I tried to find a bag to fit them, it was like carrying a small suitcase. I have the additional problem of finding stuff that is gluten and lactose free which is why Shot Bloks are great because they're free from both.
An aside, Steve Cramm or Brendan "fun-runner" Foster was talking about the men's race - their pace and the comment was "If you're a runner, you'll know what 4:20 pace is like".
Jeepers: I use shotbloks, in my running skirt have two pockets in the compression undershorts bit, can easily hold 2 tubes, if that's any help.
Did my lovely 8.5 miler this morning, on and off road through some woods, lovely temperature but breeze starting to pick up here - am loving watching VLM - marathon envy going on, looks like its not too hot for them, not that I'm envious or anything after Paris.
I think with Shotbloks I'd need 3 packs for a marathon. Perhaps the way to do it is buy one packet and then go see what the running shop has got in the way of pouches
I think my Garmin has told me that I have hit sub 5-min miles at some point downhill in a fell race. I just laughed - it could only have ever been the briefest of visits to that speed or, more likely, a gadget malfunction
Talking of which, I had forgotten that there is one of the races in my fell race series tomorrow night, so I have taken a rest day and done very little (except watch wall-to-wall sports coverage ) - it has been ace!
It's run 9 times from March-Sep and you get points for finishing in the top 20 of your gender/age cat and for PB-ing. I was so rubbish last year, that it was dead easy to get faster each time I ran, so I ended up doing quite well in the points table Don't think I will gain as many points this year, especially as so many of the dates seem to have been put on the Monday after my big Sunday races. But it is fantastic fun
We have a series once a month in the evening from May - Sept in North Oxfordshire that my club do (£12.50 paid in advance fo 5 races is good value). All around 4 miles long. I can also get to most of the East Midlands Grand Prix races which are evenings as well and between 5 miles and 10K so lots of choice for shorter stuff.
Frodo: how rude of me - forgot to wave back (now waving)!!! that fell race sounds lovely, after my trott through some woodland realised how much I'd missed my cliffpath running, now marathon training done will be bcck on those cliff paths once a week, with the dogs so long as it doesn't get too hot first thing.
Another stunning day here - will be yogaing later and a spot of gardening after the morning beach dog walk - happy days everyone.
Frodo - fell run PF - yoga and garden USB - rest day Jeepers - easy 5m (was going out early this am, then remembered the window cleaners were turning up around 8ish - would spoil my bath. . .)
PS Just listening to them discussing yesterday on BBC breakfast, (Mike Bushell and Sophie Raworth ran yesterday) and Mike was saying that he'd been told "You really should be running for a year before attempting a marathon"
I've been telling everyone never again. Truth is I'd like to see if I can find some more speed so going to concentrate on shorter distances for now. If I do go for another one it won't be London.

I have got the TV booked out to me for the morning

Been experimenting with solid food too in preparation for some of the longer stuff I'm doing this summer, current fave are peanut M&Ms

I don't think so

I know two things about 4:20 pace:
I think with Shotbloks I'd need 3 packs for a marathon. Perhaps the way to do it is buy one packet and then go see what the running shop has got in the way of pouches
USB: the asics one is nice and neat in size, a friend in the uk swears by hers.
What is this 4:20 pace you speak of, it does not compute!!!!
Talking of which, I had forgotten that there is one of the races in my fell race series tomorrow night, so I have taken a rest day and done very little (except watch wall-to-wall sports coverage ) - it has been ace!
I dealt with that by using average pace instead of current pace. It was nice to see such small numbers occasionally though!
Fell race sounds nice if the weather stays like this. How far is it?

Looks like it is going to be bright here too but I am headed for the grindstone. Still at least it is only another 4 day week
So todays plans ae:
Frodo - fell run
PF - yoga and garden
USB - rest day

Nuff said.
Hi all, having a day chilling, just watching the coverage of yesterdays race that I recored.
So I ran 4:18:35, a 21 minute PB.
Do you have another one in mind, or are you in the "never again" camp?
Could someone please give me a little kick up the arsis? I seem to be getting nothing done...
*give a kick to Frodo*

There's lots of lovely autumn marathons you know...
