  • Thanks for that Macks.I reckon if we start out at 7.00 we should be ok.

Ecky, last year we stayed in Durham. It was lovely. Lots of runners around. Good & quick on the train, I can't remember exact time but 7.30 seems to stick in the mind. I'll need to ask hubby. We had a great Chinese buffet in Durham that night. I ate so much I could hardly walk. Oh, that might of been down to having run 13 miles. Yes thats it.
  • Blimy we have been chatty today image!!

Really excited now too but also suffering with the lack of motivation that appears to be rife on this forum!! Can I have a boot please??

I got my charity tee shirt yesterday - it is very bright!! Gave it a little trial - all good. Family laughed at me!!

I am going to get a balloon following on from the comments yesterday. If you spot it great if not don't panic. Macks it could be good if we have a spot to catch up if it isn't going to cause people extra pressure. As you are 'the local' maybe you could suggest, along with those that have done it before.

I am going to have an explore on Saturday as I have no idea where I am going anyway, knowing me I could end up at Newcastle upon Trent!!

Keep well (Macks - hot lemon with a big splash of brandy and honey!) xx

  • * Thwack * there you go Sam does that help. How exiting that you got your Tshirt. I need to buy a vest to attach my cape to.I know more or less what will be comfy I just need to make sure I get no underarm chaffe.

I hope I spot your Balloon Sam. I am happy to try and meet somewhere but will just go with the flow of what everyone else is doing.

  • Hi Sam, had no brandy will just have to make do with this whisky...what a blow lol
Reckon the guys who have experience of the race day set up would know the best spot to meet up, just figured somewhere central of our zones would be better?
  • Bupa just posted this on their Facebook page,

Bupa Running ....The legendary Red Arrows will be joining Mo Farah to start the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday, flying over the start line at 11.05am! The Arrows will fly in the 'missing man' formation, in tribute to Flt Lt Jon Egging RIP.

They have now corrected it to this

Bupa Running Correction - they fly over the start line at 10.40, then over the Tyne Bridge at 11.05, then over South shields at 13.15
  • Pixie, it's only 10 mins from Durham to Newcastle central by train, then a further 25 mins to South shields on Metro
  • Lil.Lil. ✭✭✭

Thats great. Will see them flying over us.image *Lovely *

Macks, Your a Geordie Lad. Question for you - Staying in Travelodge in Gateshead, how long do you reckon it'll take to get to the start & is it easy ?

Doing a test run on breakfast for the GNR morning. Porridge with water, (I always add milk.) It looks horrid. Here goes -image GROSS.

  • Pixie, are you going by car?, if it's the Travelodge I'm thinking of by the Metro centre it's only a short drive across the river, if you can get dropped of at grandstand road that is right near the start, alternatively a bus from the Metro centre should only be 10 mins to Newcastle centre and you can walk to start from there, if it were me, I would just  leave the car and get a taxi booked
  • Hmmmm, trouble sleeping tonight wonder why that is then, god help me saturday, ok deep breaths.......and relax....1 sheep .....2 sheep......
  • ....Tyne bridge......Red arrows, ahh bugger!
  • Lol Macks. No  sleep for you now  far too exiting.  I just cant wait. I know I'm not guna sleep at all on Sat so will try get as much as I can in before.Having said that I may be shattered from all the travelling.

Not much for me today just a works exercise class. We do either boxing or circuits but its not that heavy a sesh. I will have a little run tomorrow but that will be about it.

Macks, I should of logged on this morning we could of had a good old chin wag. Last couple of nights I have taken ages to get to sleep too & then keep waking up. Zzzzzz

Going for a little gentle 3 miler now - Speak to all later. Have a good day - Drink plenty .

  • Morning all, what a night lol though all that Benylin would have knocked me out, apparently not may have to get that Brandy Sam suggested earlier....any excuse,
Off to work soon and trying to avoid anything humanly possible that could cause mishap, injury or illness
  • Hi all

     OMG really close now!!

Macks 'n' Pixie, I hope that you get more sleep tonight. I couldn't drop off either but that is more work than running!!

Pixie - the tickets arrived today, thanks you sooo much, A real help!

I have a niggle in my knee that I hope is not going to get worse image, if it does I might have to get a segway for sunday instead!!

  • Helloooooooooo. Not many more sleeps now. Very Very Very exited now.
  • Excited..me..naaaaaa, SLEEP! what's that...lol
  • How you feeling now macks.I hope that cold has gone.
  • It's still hanging about Ecks. Have got to the coughing stage, couple more days and I should be fine, normally I would just tough it out, this time I have had Benylin, strepsils, and even got some Berroca boost tabs and olbas oil..I must smell great with that lot mixed in with the deep heat cream on my ankle ..walking Pharmacy
  • Lil.Lil. ✭✭✭

That reminds me - must pack the deep Heat. Last year there was loads of men it seemed, rubbing the stuff in, even my hubby...image

Sam, glad the tickets arrived & hope that knee niggle goes away. My right knee is also being naughty. Can I cadge a lift on the Segway? Hope you had a cough free sleep last night Macks. With all the lubricants on, I bet your wife had clear airways..

How tingly exciting is this week...*VERY TINGLY*

  • Thats it then we just have to follow our noses.lol.

I am just back from a very hilly 5 miler.Felt pretty comfy but that will be it unless I do a 3ish on Fri.I just dont want to push my luck. Has anyone seen the route on the FB page. Its really good for those who have not don it before. I dont think the hills look too bad image.I could be soooooo wrong. I just cant remeber how bad they were before. I know I died at round 11 miles but then I did virtually no training before hand.

  • Is that the GNR in 3.5 mins Ecks ? , I really wouldn't say the route is hilly as such more of a slog from john reid road to finish as it is a steady incline, but having said that I haven't ran the 8 miles before that when I have ran up it, it's going to be a test alright with not being able to train properly but still confident of getting round ok, Ecks I reckon you are going to fly this year
  • Yeh thats the one..Those long inclines are hard. I just want to beat my previous GNR time.I dont reckon it will be hard as I struggled in at 3.08. I do want to just relax and enjoy this one though.I dont consider it a race for a pb for me as there is too much I want to look at.
  • Hi All,

I have just logged on the BBC weather report for Sunday and the forecast is ...wait for this ... wait a luttle longer... Yes it's Heavy showers image..I ahve no qualms about it ( all my best runs have been in the rain ) but my wife and family who are travelling up with me the night before are not happy .. going to be waiting around at South Shields for approx 5 hours from when I leave them at 8 ish until i get to the finish around 12.40.

Does nayone knopw of decent cafes / shops they can go to ?

Hope all going well image 4 days and counting.

    Andy Wuff

  • The showers don't bother me Andrew, as long as they are during the run and not while we are waiting, different for the family members though, your family will find the cafes and shops and along king st and ocean road, along the coast and toward the finish there are parks, faiground and a few pubs, I am Admin on a local food forum and will ask the members if they know of anywhere is doing any deals for runners and their families
  • Hi,

If im going for a 1.59.59sec time  what time should i do the first 10k's in ?

My previous PB for 10k's is 52min flat.... Maybe im kidding myself as my previous PB for a half mara is 2hrs, 12min.

     Any tips would be appreciated.

     David

  • Hi David, sorry as this is my first Half mara or any running event for that matter I can't help, although not  going off too fast and burning yourself out would seem sensible, I have not developed the change of pace thing yet I have one pace and stick with it on long runs
  • Lil.Lil. ✭✭✭

David, Only you can answer your question on how long/fast you think you could do your first 10k in. Have you been doing lots of Long Runs at the week-ends ? I quite often get slower by 10 miles. Hate interval training or even faster pacing. I know its good for us but I always develop shin splints.

I'm like Macks - One pace 'PiXie'.. Will not go mad and too fast. Will go steady all the way..

    Have a good GNR.

  • have just found out this restaurant is open all day, are doing sunday roasts, they are also doing a 2 course Pasta and pizza deals for £10  http://www.bravirestaurant-southshields.co.uk/ they are in the town centre near Metro

for something a little closer, this might be an option especially if you have kids, it is right next to the fair and a short walk to finish, http://www.dunesadventureisland.com/

I will put a few links up to pubs along the beach up near the finish

Just up on the right from here along the coast road is this

heading down from the metro toward the coast and along ocean road there are a load of Indian restaurants, a few italians and chippys, this one has won awards

but there are others along the way which some people prefer

  • Have also just been informed that the Momotaj Indian restaurant along Ocean road(on way from metro to beach) are doing the specials starting from 5.95 all day ! Includes a free half lager or glasss of red or white wine , starter main mean , rice or chips (rice flavours varies) and ice cream or coffee at the end, there are a lot of Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants along ocean road, so no doubt will follow suit
