Its for massage reasons plus road rash reasons. Biggest reason it just looks dammed good.
I thought cyclists also shaved their legs so that bandages and scabs are less painful to remove after crashes. Would hope that's not so much of an issue for runners unless you're particularly accident-prone.
But when they retire, do they end up with legs like wookies'?

If you start out looking like a wookie then maybe shaving has an advantage.
