  • Hi Floridaisy and welcome.

Your first one, that's excellent, sound's like your building up nicely and like you say, I'd not get that hung up on a time for your first, just enjoy the day, there is a really small expo that's on the Saturday, which is good to go to and take in some of the city's attractions, although not too much walking nowimage I'm sure you'll really enjoy the weekend and good luck with training and it certainly does come around quickly.

    Andy.
  • Welcome floridaisy,

Just aim to finish first, time is not important, a long way to go from now to then

Dont worry about walking either, I know a few people who think they have to do it without walking.. It's recommended

Have you done any 5k 10k or half marathons?

Some of the forum 6 threads would be good for you, the beginner / 5 hrs or above ones
  • Hi All,

Still deliberately staying away from here as I just get annoyed when I read about how everyone else can run! Hi Andy & Floridaisy - nice to "meet" youimage

Floridaisy, 1st Marathon - I know how you feel, was me last year, took over my life a wee bit lol! As FRC says, don;t worry about a time - my biggest mistake! Everyone kept telling me that and I was saying yadah yadah yadah and ended up half killing myself in the process trying to get my time (failed miserably!), you will love it - and want to do another one imageso really dont worry about the time and just concentrate on your training and pacing and follow the program as best you can image You can start going for times on your next one!

Hi Franny - getting ever closer to mid Feb when i have to make a decision. Feel like I've seen every specialist under the sun and have to say it feels slightly better - but still "not right" Learned my lessons the hard way last year so will pull out if I have to - though I wont be happy (still thinking in sub 330 mode at the minute) I have been out running (started at 5 minutes, then up to 7, then 9 (on physio's advice) and wil keep going but I am very conscious of the pain when I am running but going to see another specialist tonight to try and help things along.  They have all basically decided that the root of my problems is that one leg is longer than the other so impacting heavily on the forces through my foot, which has caused tha pain, which has subconsciously changed my gait blah blah blah

Sorry for going on a bit but this forum is my therapy! image Happy running and hopefully in the next few weeks I will be back fighting fit and on here more regularly again boring you all to tears! Have a good day all!

  • Miggito... I'd be happy just to be able to run in your shoes
Have you even gone sub 4 yet?

Not sure what the sub 3.30 hold is
  • Hi everyone - I'll be running too. Despite having a few marathons under my belt, I've never actually trained for one before, so the 16 week RW intermediate plan I'm about to embark on will be a first for me. Hoping to squeak in just under 4 hours if I'm lucky on the day...
  • What sort of times have you got noanie for the others?
  • Ahem. I'm a bit embarrased to say! 6hrs for Loch Ness (lots of hills) and 5hrs30 for Chester (nice and flat). Also 6hrs30 for a trail marathon with a friend who had run three others in the previous month and was totally exhausted. We walked most of that one after the 7th mile.

A few years ago I stormed (relatively speaking!) round a half in 1hr50, so sub 4 should be do-able.

  • Hi Noanie, I was intrigued you have ran Marathons before but never trained for one?!? Did you just jump out of bed and run 26 miles lol? Guessing you're just a natural but am sure you'll reap big rewards from actually doing some proper training!

FRC - lol - I know! Deep down that is what I should be thinking too but I'm more optimist than realist image To run sub 330 is 8 minute miles, to run sub 4 is approx 9 minute miles, I've ran 22 miles in 3hrs 20 (last March) but was getting faster up until I stopped running in October when I was training at 7-7 1/2 minute miles for shorter distances and 8 - 8.20 for longer so I have it in me - just not sure I will have acquired the level of fitness back in time for Edinburgh. If I don't make it at Edinburgh (presuming I do actually run it!) I will definitely be going for it in London next year!

  • Well, each time it was more of a shambling shuffle than a proper run, but yes, you've got the idea. The first marathon I did, I hadn't had a pair of trainers on my feet for at least four months beforehand, and I was a serious chubber. When I say no training, I really do mean none! But I don't mean I'd never run before that at all. A couple of years before, I used to run four or five times a week, 4 miles at a time, and I could do that in 31 minutes, so just under 8 min miles.

I always wanted to run a 7 min mile but couldn't ever keep that pace up for a full mile! If you can run that fast, with a bit of practice you should be able to turn in a great marathon time when you regain your fitness.

  • Hi all,

Just catching up on the thread here as I now have a confirmed place - thank you kind man on Gumtree! image

I know that there have been a few others wanting places on here and so I have also been emailed by a lovely lady looking to transfer her place for face value. If anyone is interested PM me with your email details and I will pass them on to her.

If there are others looking for a place then gumtree was reccomended to me and has worked so it is well worth a try!!

On another note, I am looking to book accommodation near Musselburgh as we will need to drive back to the West Midlands straight after the race image Does anyone have experience of getting to the start using public transport? I have checked and there are buses - 44 and 26 with times that look OK but it would be great to hear from anyone that has done this in the past.

Also, this might be a silly question but I presume your bags get transported from the start to the finish as at London? There is no mention of this on the website's FAQs and so wanted to check!

Happy runs (or strategic recouperation) everyone!

  • Hi ladeyjadey...well done on getting a place...on the transport front some B&Bs offer transport or so i have heard...the bus rout will be a bit different on the day so best to check nearer the time but most should tke you fairly near the start of the course. yes your bags get transported to the end..don't worry.

Miggitio...oh I hope you get sorted soon so a you can try for your sub 3.30...bows down..i am not worthy...i am in awe and that is a time i can only dream of....i am probably looking at sub 4.30 but would love sub 4 and that is what i am aiming for at the moment.

Noanie ..i too was intrigued that you never trained before ...LOL...I am sure you will do well with a training plan..on that note I have never e=really used one either before but have adapted some to sort of suit my needs. Must have been doing something right last year as i knocked 30 mis or so off the previous year..lol.

Been to gym today for weights etc and thenwent for a short 30 min tempo run.

Happy running everyone and take care those returning from injury..there is still plenty time yet....?????

  • Thanks FrannyT!

Just to let you know that the place has now been passed on but if I hear of anymore I will post them on here. Gumtree is definitely a good source though and I am sure there will be more as the weeks go on. I am just one of those people that likes to know what they are doing and so felt better securing one now.

    Happy Thursday all image

  • thanks for the pass, LJ. We are a band of West Midlanders too, though I think accommodation may be getting sorted for the Sun night (is it a BH on the Monday?)
  • Oh cool - unfortunately the bank holiday has moved due to the Queen's Jubilee. Bit gutting as my OH is a teacher and so we were hoping to make a week of it with half term. Instead we'll be heading back down the motorway on the Sunday night!

Gonna book the accommodation for 3 nights anyway though as then I can go back get showered etc before the loooooong drive home!

Really hope that the place works out for you. I think that it is great that Edinburgh let you transfer like this.

  • I would get booked up soon peeps as think it goes fast image
  • Thanks FrannyT - got my eye on a Premier Inn in either Inverisk or Newcraighall that I am going to book tonight.

Do you know the area at all? Would either of these be better than the other? They look fairly similar to me but the Inverisk one looks a little closer to the finish.

  • Hi all,

Hope you are looking forward to some nice LSRs tomorrow! Just to let you all know that if you havent already booked accommodation, Premier Inn have rooms for £39 per night in a couple of their hotels fairly near the finish. I've booked the one in Inveresk - just hoping I'll be able to get to the start OK?! image The public transport looks OK to I am sure it will be fine!

Did a spin class today (determined I am going to do one thing other than running a week) and legs are feeling it so run in the morning could be tough!

BTW - I am sure most of you know all of this anyway but heard on the facebook page that they have amended the finish to make it better for spectators and are going to transport all of the bags to the finish. Have heard some very mixed reviews of the finish from people who have done it previously and so good that they are looking at this again this year. Here's hoping it'll be slick...

    Have good runs everyone!

  • Hi everyone

Great to see that everyone is getting excited for the big day and that training is underway.

Miggito....still got my fingers crossed for you and hope you get to start training soon

had a bit of a cold recently so took a weeks rest (while i still can) back on it this week with a steady 8 mile run today.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone

  • Hey everyone,

Just to say i have a place for the edin marathon in may if anyone wants it? would just like costs covered transfer fee and entry fee thankyou!
  • Hi Marina,

If your place is still available I may know someone. If so, do you want to PM me your email address and then I will check with my friend to see if she is still keen and let you know? If not, no worries!

  • Hey LJ place been taken thanks anyway tho!
  • No probs at all - figured that would be the case! Glad you found a buyer!
  • Hey Everyone,

I've signed up this year, having missed it last year. Did a 3:52 at Amsterdam last year, so I am just going for a PB, if I got a 3:30 I'd be ecstatic. Think I will do some leg weights and squats in the gym this time, and make the legs a bit stronger, see it it make a difference. Has anyone else done that? Did you notice much of a difference?

    Regards,

    P.

  • Hey guys, thought I had better show my face as not been on here for a while. Been loitering on the Edinburgh 2010 thread. Most of the guys on there are going back for 2012.

I have the small matter of London first though and using Edinburgh as a back up in case London goes badly or the conditions aren't great for a fast time. I really need my knee to settle down first though. Went really hard in to January and now paying the price and can't run at all. Hopefully nothing too serious - fingers crossed.

    Paul - I PB'd at London last year and for the first time I did some leg strengthening. Nothing major just went on a few machines at the gym between the treadmill/step/bike/rowing. Not sure if it made a massive difference but I would certainly recommend some core work. I generally have a good stretch and then do;

Lunges, Ballet Stretch, One Leg Crouch, Plank, Step Ups, Leg Raise, Sit Ups, Leg Lifts

Did the session twice a week and it made a huge difference

  • Thanks MC Dave, I had forgotten about a few of those excerises you mentioned there. I'd have loved to run London, but I was away when the ballot went out, and I cant raise thousands for charity.

     Regards,

    P.

  • If anyone is still looking for a hotel for this then Premier Inn have rooms at Livingston Bathgate for £29/night. The train station is nearby and has trains straight I'm to Edinburgh on Sunday morning with time to spare.

    I'm already booked!
  • sounds good MC. just checking and didn't realise it was a 9.50 or 10am start..

I'm nipping across from glasgow but first train is only 8 or 8.30am which is tight for time.

  • can't see those rooms MC? definitely Premier Inn?
  • They were there yesterday afternoon. I booked mine.

Premier Inn at Livingston Bathgate on Premier Saver where you pay up front!

I'm away at the moment but will check it out tonight and post a link
  • Just checked and it's no longer there image

It would appear that I may have got the last of the cheap rooms - sorry about that!
