  • They certainly helped image.  Now I just need to do some training in between races and I'll be right on Shielsy's heels image

Brilliant running Shielsy image.  You were just flying!

  • Marvellous running people!

I loved it too, apart from the congestion from mile 5.5 onwards after I'd got pretty free and there was space enough earlier than expected.  Then, although I didn't find miles 9 or 11 hard my stats would argue otherwise!

Did the last mile in 7:45 and felt strong, grateful, to be there and enjoying rather than getting frustrated.  Yep, all the usual random and sudden walking and chucking of bottles, got tripped under a bridge but recovered, etc...and how many roundabouts were there?!?

    It was MEGA!!!!

Managed 1:52:55 and happy bunny seeing as I'm another who was a bit of a write off as recently as end of May.

Question : Once you've done it once, do they send you an email to enter for next year, or what do I need to do?!!

  • Think Shielsy has enough people on her heels by the looks of things. Maybe next year she can get round without becoming too closely acquainted with the tarmac.

  • Reikirabbit, perhaps the reason you didn't find them hard is because, as your stats suggested, you did the sensible thing (knowingly or not) and slowed down.

They said on the BBC at teh end of their broadcast taht you can sign up fo rthe reminder service already. Plenty of buzz on here though when things start happening.

  • watched the whole race on tv realy wanna take part next year want to enter now but page not comeing up ?? is it not open for entrys yet ?

  • Grrr, bloody useless ipad keyboard ! I believe what i was trying to type was ' pb of the day award is all yours shielsey!'
  • Not yet, Scott. Usually Jan/Feb I think that the ballots open.

  • XL-man you might be right!  I kept the same effort level I guess.  Unintentionally I assure you, although maybe these things become more innate eventually.

  • I'm not sure I'm keen on the t-shirt mind ... dark grey is not the most inspiring of colours.  And the shade is like it should be black, but someone put them all on a boil wash.

And will the organisers please put some ladies portaloos inside the pens?  or at least a cordoned off area so that people with buckets can pee in peace?  We don't all have handy penises you know!

(apologies for saying penis on a thread, especially since it's Sunday image

    Ahh, of courseimage.

  • Cant believe shielsey said 'penis' and 'penises' ! I am shocked and saddened !
  • Shocking isn't it MsSJ. I think as a penalty she needs to be forced to drink copious amounts of alcohol tonight and then go to work tomorrow with a hangover!

Oh, no change there then! image

  • 1: 48, my gnr pb is 1.39 but was never gonna be close to that. Furthest I've ran in 3 years so happy with that... Congratulations everyone!
  • Been lurking here for a while, really enjoyed following the build up. My first half, last summer could not even complete5k! Lost 3 stone, done a couple of 10ks and fancied the challenge. Great weekend in Newcastle, smashing locals, great race! My training was set back by a calf strain late July, not able to do the mileage I wanted, but stepped up again last 4 weeks. Completed in 2.15, paced nicely and feel great, will hope to take at least 10 off next time. Well done everyone and thanks for a great forum! ... Next stop great south!
  • Great day. Head very sore now - possibly a little too much post run rehydration. A PB of 1hr 40 m 13 s - torn between being pleased by PB or disappointed that I didn't run 14 secs faster.

    See you all next year.
  • Well, you all inspired me to stop lurking and post. I managed to knock over 20 minutes off my previous PB of 2 years ago and 24 minutes off last years time despite starting at the back of the white zone this year (instead of in C and having a total mare final 5K last year). 1:46.35. Loved every minute of it, and can't wait to knock another 10 minutes off next year!
  • Evening image    That was fun image

I'm a bit slower than you speedy lot, but was very happy with completing in 9 minutes less than last year and a HM pb by 5 minutes!

But can I just say........I BLOODY HATE MILE 10 THROUGH TO 11 image. It's evil !!!

  • Miles 11 and 12 were the worst imo. Mainly uphill whilst already tired on a long straight road. The final mile I felt a huge psychological boost in knowing how near the finish I was.
  • My first post and my first half marathon so hi and hi image

just wanna say what a great day it was today, such a great atmosphere and one i want to revisit next year image

when i signed up i gave a 2 hour 30 estimated finish time and ended up finishing 2 hours 8 minutes 26 seconds image so very proud of the effort ive put in, although very sore and achey at the moment.

My time put me in I pen of green and it didnt take me long to catch the white pen runners up completely, with a fair few walking which makes me wonder why they put such decent finishing times to end up in those pens in the first place.

by about mile 3/4 i was in my stride and felt really pumped by all of the support from the crowds and the cheer tent of anthony nolan (whom i was running for) and that really envigorated me when i was feeling rubbish.  II dont think anything really could have prepared me for mile 11 - 12, that was ridiculous and is probably what cost me  a sub 2 hours time as my legs just couldnt do it :/ and i swear  the final mile just goes on and on and on.

the only thing that annoyed me on the day was kids stood at the side of the road around mile 3/4 just firing water at people.....when the kid got me i shot him a death stare, given it was still chucking it down and i was majorly concentrating on the running, i really didnt appreciate it.

other than that, awesome day, awesome people and awesome red arrows!

  • Really great day. Crowd were amazing.

Nope, no change whatsoever.  You were both missed tonight, by the way!

Stephen, I can sympathise with your frustration - a few years ago I ran this in 2 hours and 13 seconds, which was weird ... a part of me was chuffed as at the time it was such a fantastic pb for me, but another part of me thought 'You couldn't have run 14 seconds faster??!'

Well done to everyone who ran pbs today - reading race reports is one of my favourite things.

GBD - the kids always shoot water at the runners, every year.  To be honest I don't mind it ... when it's hot it can be quite a godsend and when it's wet (like it was today) you don't notice it anyway.

Have just spent a fantastic evening with a load of old running friends celebrating today's events.  I just want to say that I'm so pleased that I joined this forum as a nervous newbie all those years ago.  This has led me to meet people that I now properly class as my 'real' friends, who have shared some horrible aspects of my life (as well as all the nice, good stuff) and has led me to take part in events I would never have contemplated otherwise (I would never have contemplated a marathon, joined my running club, fell in love with the Blaydon Race to the extent I have or taken part in Thunder Run were it not for the people I've met on here).

Running - and you lot (you know who you are) have enriched my life.  xxx

  • Anyone sore this morning? I'm a little on the knees but the other half is walking like a penguin.... Think I'll drive us to work, I mentioned getting the metro but that didn't go down too well! Thinking of doing cumbrian half in few weeks.....its strange how you get the bug back!!

    Happy sore monday!!! image
  • Tomorrow will be my sore day!

    Nice running Daeve!

  • Morning all, i echo everything said about miles 10-12, i haate them ! Every year they have beaten me into submission, but not this year!!ni was ready for them and the guynrunning alongside me summed it up perfectly when we got there and he muttered under his breath 'here we go, come on then you little f***ers'. Made me laugh and i watched him just steam off at hyperspeed !
  • Lovely to hear that mostly everyone had a great run yesterday... In spite of the rain and hills!

It was great to meet so many runners too - with the exception of the bloke who pushed my mother to the ground on the start line as he attempted to make a sprint start. You were in Zone E. This was her 11th GNR and while she finished the race in a respectable time, she had to complete the run with painful grazes on her knees and arms.

Great North Runners are generally so courteous and friendly that this is especially upsetting and I'm sure the forum will agree that this behaviour is completely unacceptable at any event.

In the event that the runner concerned sees this, please note: You, sir, are a remarkable asshat of the highest order and I wish you a lifetime of shin splints in return.

  • Them 3 kids stood in the centrel reservation between 3-4 mile spraying water at the runners..........

I squarted my water at the big lad and got him right in the kipper!!  image  All the runners around me started cheering and laughing at him then!image
