Hi,Been out injured for 6 months now, gone down the usual avenues with no confirmed diagnosis.Having searched the web,my symptoms seem to point towards GILMORES GROIN.My question to anyone out there is,which HOSPITAL on the NHS will confirm diagnosis and potentailly operate as £2000+ is not an option at the minute for me!! I should mention that I DO have a GP letter of referal,so now need to select the appropriate specailist, would be very grateful for anyones experience with this.

The physio I saw at Lilleshall was specialised in sports injury and rehab. I researched my symptoms on line and convinced myself I had Gilmores groin. Pain during and after a run, worse the following day. Pain rolling over in bed and pressing my knees together. It all seemed to fit. She said gilmores groin was unlikely. she gave me core strengthening exercises- I cannot remember them all but quite a few involved balancing on a Bosu ball. I gave up running for three months whilst still exercising on eliptical cross trainer which did not cause any irritation. It was tough not running for so long, but it did the trick. I've been fine since.
I've been referred to a consultant in Newcastle on the NHS for suspected Gilmores Groin, just waiting for the appointment to come through. My symptons fit exactly and my physio ruled out hip abductor and pubis problems and an x ray and ultrasound that my gp requested also came back clear. I understand osteitis pubis would have shown on xray, have you had an xray and ultraound?
I'm currently 7 weeks into not running and still suffer pain after swimming and walking down steep hills so not running isn't improving it. any. Even just running across the road for example brings immediate pain.
PM me and I'll give you the consultant's name whom my physio recommended.
Paul, how did you get on?
Ive had the problem for a long time, had MRI, ultrasound, physio, EMG tests, all clear, had an epidural steroid injection into lumbar spine, no joy. My running has decreased to nothing now, as Mark said, lots of core work, pilates, yoga etc... and the eliptical, sadly not the same buzz as running but trying to keep my fitness at a level.
Examined by a general surgeon at Stepping Hill who found that my inguinal ring was dilated (another symptom of Gilmores) but because he couldn't find a hernia he was stumped, when I mentioned Gilmores he wasn't really sure what I was talking about and refered me to Rheumatology??????
Anyway to cut a very, very long story short, bit the bullet and searched for a surgeon locally with knowledge of groin injuries and found Aali Jan Sheen cost @£190 for the consultation but he does the op on the NHS at Manchester Royal, a bit of a wait but I am hoping it will be worth it.
Hope your diagnosis doesn't take as long as mine.
Tom
I had my consultation with Mr Sheen 28th May, pre op end of June, still waiting for my op, I did get a date for the 27 Oct but that was a cancellation with another surgeon, not going with anyone else so I cancelled that, spoke with his secretary and she assured me it will before xmas, having waited this long I thought it was worth the wait to get the surgeon I wanted.
As for the diagnosis, he really went off my past history and the investigations that I had (MRI, nerve conduction tests etc) to rule other things out such as hip/pelvis abnormalities.
He has diagnosed chronic groin pain syndrome, basically pressure on the genitofemoral nerve or the ileoinguinal nerve with no hernia present and possibly a lipoma present within the core (not sure what that means)
He is going to try a laparoscopic repair 80 - 90% success rate, if that doesn't work he will have to open me up which will involve disruption on the conjoint tendon.
The treatment through the NHS was diabolic and extremely slow, each department was very keen to offload me to the next, the last surgeon I saw at Stepping Hill signed me off to rheumatology even though I had no symptoms whatsoever, that was the last straw and made me go to Mr Sheen.
Try and get as much as you can ruled out and don't let them fob you off, I found out too late that if you complain you get treated much better.
good luck
Tom
Hey Tom,I have now switched my NHS appointment over to dr sheen,so will hopefully receive a consultation date soon.I live in A-U-L,so the MRI suits me fine, thanks for reccomending someone local that specialises.Let me know how you get on with your op.Take care.Paul.
Paul just got my date through for the 20th October, a week earlier than with the other surgeon. If you get a date for the op after seeing Mr Sheen make sure that you keep in touch with his secretary for dates, thats what I started doing and it seemed to have worked.
