I'm trying to decipher the bike course and doing a very bad job of it.
Schmunks - my intentions were to take the bike and to bike out somewhere not too far from Tenby. Ideally to be at the top of one of the nasty hills. If I can satisfy these criteria it would be perfect:
1. cyclable from Tenby 2. top of one of the nasty hills 3. passed by athletes more than once
Does anyone know the course well enough to know if this magical venue exists?
Wiseman's Bridge satisfies 2 and 3, but not sure about 1. Also can't remember if the whole bike route was on closed roads, so unsure whether it would be bikeable.
Hope may be the best person to help you, Mouse, having previously done the course
If Wiseman's Bridge is at Saundersfoot then it doesn't look to be too far out of Tenby. Do you fancy it Schmunks?
Re the closed roads, marshals tend to be a bit more lenient with cyclists, it's the cars that present the problem.
Will drop Hope a message.
Gastank - yeah, I could just bike it alongside some poor pirate, huh? No, I mean chasing out in one direction whilst athletes are going the other way and not too far away so that we can get back to support on the run course. Y'know?
Been away from the forum for awhile, but something occurred to me while I was watching the video from last year. I didn't see anyone with a short-sleeve wetsuit. The only suit I have has short-sleeves...should I be concerned? Would love to hear from some of you who raced last year on water temps.
The bike will be 2 loops of Wisemans on the second half of the bike leg.
I fancy supporting from the hill at Saundersfoot. Personally I found this hill just as horrid to go up as Weisemans, possibly because I was not expecting it and I was exhausted. It is just a couple of miles back towards Tenby after Wiseman. There is a pub and beach to keep me and the kids entertained
Pub you say? Well, you're making that hill sound much more attractive. Maybe between yourself, Scmunks and I we can form a pirate support station there?
Wiseman's is a cool hill, and you'd see plenty of pain and suffering there, but it's under the trees, a bit dark and not as nice a spot from which to spectate as Saundersfoot. If you got yourselves on the Tenby side of Saundersfoot where the road climbs gently (cough) out of the village, you'll see nearly as much misery and have full access to the beach and chip/lager-related amenities! It's also only a short walk from there to the New Hedges roundabout which I believe is the turnaround point after the uphill slog of the run leg... even more misery.... and definitely a spot at which I'd appreciate your hilarious verbal abuse, please .
I'm on saundesfoot beach today, v v hot and agree with above statements, think it would be a great area to spectate with amenities and not to far from Tenby either
At the hill Muffin mentions you mean, TSA, or there generally?
There generally, but if there is going to be a pirate supporting station, they will join that, we are staying at the same place as Schmunkee and Barley (some Fawlty Towers type place, that over looks the swim start and is on the run course)
When I was there last year, we had dinner at a pub called The Captains Table which Is at the bottom of Saundersfoot.
When I did my supporting on the Sunday, we had to park in a different car park (road closures) and we walked to Wiseman's Bridge, effectively walking the bike route in reverse. We did ou homeward stretch by walking across the beach
Hmm... walking with little kids can be a pain in the @rse.
I have walked to Wisemans via Saundersfoot from New Hedges and it didnt seem far. There is more to to keep us entertained in Saundersfoot and my spectator role will be dependent on if the supporting inlaws are looking after kids or not.
One thing for sure that course will make sure we all have a long day
Before I commit any further, I think it's best if I consult with the person I am supporting to see if there is anywhere in particular he wold like some cheering and flag waving. I can't foresee that he would have any preferences, by it's best I ask
Quick out and back to Saundersfoot this morning, double espresso opposite Captains Table with a view of harbour beach and then bitch hill that never ends back to base - 20.5 miles 1h28 riding, was bootiful
With enough training and good weather IM Wales would be epic... Think if not trained this IM will deffo kick ass hard, must be a few DNFs on this one - now can imagine how hard bike leg of whole route is
Just thinking about riding those hills again is making me cringe.... Saundersfoot had a real buzz about it though so would recommend it for spectating as they all looked like they were having a good time last year .
"Slags mum" ( please call her that if you see her ) and step sis will also be there cheering pirates past .
Still places available .... Hehehe .. Come on , you know you want to
There's no way on this EARTH I'd call your mum that!!!
My strange sense of Mousey logic is drawing me to do rather than support, which has to be the stupidest idea I've had in ages. Quite pleased I had an exhausting long run today to bring me back down to earth.

mouse, believe me, you don't want to see me at the top of one of nasty hills
Oh but I do, because you will be so flipping awesome when you top it.

Was at north beach today, water looked awesome.... Hills around town and just getting up from the beach makes me think WTF?!?
Hats off to anyone doing Wales
I rode the course earlier this year with STIL.

Given that my usual sherpee has done all their previous ones sans sherpa, they can't complain if I sherpa for someone else
G'won now mouse... its a beautiful course and lots of downhills
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if your sherpee says yes are you in then ??
Mrs SA will sherpa for whoever you agreed to sherpa for!
