  • Still in Spain Corrie.image

I read that book you recommended.
    It was imageimageimage

  • Yes indeed Az (If it's the same book I'm thinking of) - there are a few flaws in her argument but generally it does give an accurate representation of what's going on.

  • AZacaya........thanks for that link...I enjoyed reading it and yes there should be more accurate showing of sciences.......it was interesting......I prefer scientific pedants to the language pedants....image.and language comes under art and artistic license

and Phil......he did state that miracles were alright because we do not know the truth on those subjects........

it is widely accepted that Jesus was real and lived in those times.............although there is no proof yet that him mother was a virgin and his father a God........

but as he said we know exactly what the moon does so should reflect it accuratelyimage

  • Gizzards Puke wrote (see)
"The scene is unlikely, says Barthel. A waning moon, which looks like a "C" in the northern hemisphere, doesn't rise until around 3am, and reaches the height in the card an hour or two later.

"I don't think the children would be out at that time," Barthel says."

Don't think he's met many kids recently.

A while back while out with some friends at 2am on a Sunday morning, two teenagers wandered up to us and asked if we knew where the local skate park was.
  • At least they were doing some sport. image

What were you doing out at 2am Griffin?image

    <folds arms and taps foot>

Seren - I would love to be a science nerd. Nerdy should be the new black. Or summat.

As the song says 'it's hip to be square'.

That's the one Corrie. I can't pretend I noticed any flaws, image but then I am new to the subject.

I'm reading it again now in Spanish. It's all good practice.

  • One of the flaws is she seems to imply in the chapter 'Thatcherism and its Useful Enemies' that Thatcher manipulated entering the Falklands War in order to make her re-election a nailed on certainty. Now, just prior to the Falklands War the Tories were tanking in the polls and after the successful defence of the Falklands, they were voted back into power on a tidal wave of uber-patriotism. This did lead to the continuation of the 'free market' experiment.

However, there was no way that Thatcher controlled the events that led to the Falklands War starting; it was as a result of startling incompetence she could not have foreseen and there was not any collusion (as seems to be suggested). We were pretty close to losing that war. All it would have taken for the Argentinian pilots to realise that their bombs weren't arming (they were dropping them too low) or a missile hit on a carrier and we'd have lost; as there was no way we could have provided air cover and the Argentine Air force could have picked off our ships at will, without the fear of being shot down by Sea Harriers...

In short, we were damned lucky! If we'd have lost, the Tories would have been out of power for a generation - no more Thatcherism, no more free market, as the Labour Party were still Socialist in those days... The author seems to imply a plot - if it was a plot it was a very risky plot.

It's a small flaw in the books general premise - but I believe a significant one, thought it doesn't really damage the overall validity of the analysis.
  • Can I put you down as a maybe on the nerd list then Corrie?image

    PS: Will you marry me?

  • That depends - is bigamy a crime in Spain image
  • Azac.....I love it when corinthian joins in a debate.......he always uses words I can understand........he should work for the government making sure that all leaflets etc are understandable and free from jargon because the organisation responsible at the moment are not doing a great job..........
