Watching other runners

I think being a runner, you can't help but watch others run, when your not running. Be it in a car, on foot, or sitting in a pub. You see a runner go past, and you watch them. Its like your eyes are slowly drawn to them. Your looking at the gear they are wearing, what pace they are running, and guessing whether what level of runner they are.

Sometimes i have done this, and people think i am either eyeing them up or pouring scorn on them. But you can't help it. When running becomes part of your life, you do pay attention to other runners. It has also given me incentive to run, and think, yes, i could do with a run right now, wishing you were out there. On days when your feeling crap, and you see some overweight person struggling up a hill in their cottons, and you think, well if they can be bothered to get out there, why cant i.

There is something to be said for the past time of watching other runners, and not because i think they are hot!

    People watching.

Social animal - hey I'm part of your pack.

Jealousy - barsteward out there running while I'm stuck in the traffic / at work / drinking this pint in the pub.

  • I drive for a living and do this constantly. Recently started bike riding as well to keep it mixed up but this now means i have to check out any bike riders gear as well as all the runners i pass!

I always look at other runners, checking their form and often look on in admiration at how some runners make running fast look so easy. Every time i see someone running when i'm not, i want to run.

Sometimes i want to tell them i've just been for a 10k run and the car is just getting me somewhere else, like i shouldn't be doing anything but running.

RTTB, i am always checking out other peoples bikes on my commute, before deciding whether to overtake or leave the carbon road bike to it.

  • I usually find myself checking out women, to debate on whether her bum is bigger than mine and whether she's faster than me!! image

...no really, I think it's only natural to check other runners out when you are one.

I don't think about them, if they wave  / make some form of greeting as they go past, then I'll reciprocate, but otherwise, once I've passed them, it's out of sight, out of mind.
