  • Barbie - that's fantastic advice - thank you as well! Mind you my family are very experienced race spectators - they managed to see me 6 times at London last year! (I was going quite slowly, mind you!)

Still feeling quite tired today, but have planned 16 miles for tomorrow. Will take it really slow, but must get the miles in as I'll be missing 3 runs next week :O

Catherine - hope your half goes well on Saturday!
  • Thanks barbie- that's brilliant info! Not really looked at all the information yet- just allowed myself to skip fwd a few weeks to the big day!! Pleased it looks so spectator friendly

Hope your run goes well tomorrow B&T image
  • Is it time to start training yet? image

Morning peeps.... All still healthy, if a little weary?
  • Morning all. Nice hilly 5 miles last night in the rain, top class. Looking forward to the Salisbury 10 mile race on Sunday. My aim is to run 1:33, made up of mile 1, 10 mins, miles 2-5, 9:30, and miles 6-10. 9:00. Who knows, depending on how I feel, I may put in a burst at the end, let’s see how many people I can overtake in the last 200 m !!

  • Good luck SalisburyLad, especially with that sprint finish.

I'm staying in Salisbury Saturday night, to then go down to the new forest 20, any recommendations for good carb restaurants? Does Salisbury have good morrocan or Lebanese?

PSC - are you still going to run the marathon?

    Barbie - great advice, thanks.

  • Anyone still looking for accommodation in Brighton?
  • Well that has to be the soggiest 5 miles I have ever run! Was going for 10 today but torrential rain cut it short - still it's 5 miles more than I would normally have run and hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow :0)
  • Glad training is going well for everyone! I'm having a slow and easy week after PBing at the Surrey Spitfire 20 miler last weekend. Did any of you run it?
  • Hi GCE, sorry but having young children we don't get out to restaurants much in Salisbury so I wouldn't know much about Lebanese or Moroccan -- but there are definitely quite a few pasta places, in and around the market square is where to look.

hi all. Thanks for earlier advice about compression socks and protein. I went for both things and used gels as well in my long slow 16 miles. Feel so much better this week than last week. I have a half on Saturday (am a week behind I know!) so hope it will go well!!
I have ordered extra pair of compression socks too image
    Another question:
How is the Brighton course for spectators- is there opportunity to be at the start, pick up the route part way and also be at the finish?! I will be out there a good 5 hours I reckon!!

Just to back up what others have said - I ran round the course last year as OH ran the race - it was brilliant. Except the finish which is impossible to see from the side so no point going up there imo. Staying out on the seafront about 25 miles is best.

  • Afternoon all

Well 22 miles for me today that’s the longest run i do was feeling tired today so decided to stick close to home so did ran 2 and 3 mile loops the whole thing took 3:31:12 with a Avg pace of 9:29m/m so not to bad as i was trying to keep the pace down and to be honest wasn’t to worry about the time more about just getting around

did struggle a bit over the last couple of miles and legs are feeling it now cut back week next week then my last big mileage run the week after  before the taper starts can’t wait

  • 22 miles in anyone's money is a heck of a long way Toby, and a good pace too. image

Well done on the 22m, Toby.

I ran 12m today.  My heart rate is still elevated, so I assume I haven't recovered from the race.  Recovery run tomorrow, then long run on Sunday.

  • I'm resting - still knackered after the 20 mile race last weekend. Nobody needs accommodation.. Still trying to shift my booking?
  • If anyone is interested, I noticed that they have put up a new course video, includes some video clips from previous years. If you have 10 mins spare it is a good watch !

  • Hello, I've been lurking here for a while and finally thought I'd post! I've found following this thread very helpful. Brighton will be my 2nd marathon, having done Edinburgh 3 years ago.

I didn't enjoy it much, which is why it's taken me a while to try another one! I started training in January with a lingering injury and a cold, so my mileage hasn't been as high as I'd have liked.

But today was my biggest run so far, at 18 miles. It was a wet one, and I found it hard going. I was aiming for 10 - 10.30 min miles, and averaged 10.18, so happy with that.

What next though? I'll hopefully do 20 miles next week, but I'm not sure after that - any advice? image

  • That vid's definitely worth a watch. I feature at 4:21 giving a wave to the camera!

I've had a dodgy stomach this week so had to cut back the running. Just been out and done 6.5 miles in the rain which was a bit tough to start but ok after 4 miles. Plan to do 22 tomorrow as it didn't happen last weekend.

Weather's all changed again. Lovely and sunny at the start of the week, now raining loads with snow forecast for Sunday/Monday!
  • Hi Liz and welcome image

What's your target for Brighton, have you got a time in mind? 18 miles at 10.18 min mile pace is a great effort and will definitely stand you in good stead on race day image

I'm another one who had to miss a couple of runs this week (first time I've missed a run in over 2 years when I had a broken toe) as I have got a bruised foot image. Went out on Tuesday and I could run on it but there was a dull aching pain so I missed Wednesday's and yesterday's runs and it feels much better so glad I was sensible for once and rested it!

Out tomorrow for a 20 on road, then 10 on Sunday to get 30 in on back to back runs.

  • Hi all. Video is really good- made me feel a bit emotional- reckon I will be blubbering wreck at sone point on the day!!

Hi liz- wish I could cover 18 miles at that pace- well done! (and well done to everyone getting the high milage in and getting the job done image )

16.4 miles still furthest I have gone. Next week 18. My training plan has 18 as longest but think I would feel better with 20 under my belt?
  • Catherine you are not the only one who got emotional watching the video, made me wish i was doing it with you guys this year, will be there next year though

  • Thanks Barbie and Catherine!

I'd like to get under 4hours 30, that's my goal at the moment.

I've been using the runners world pace calculator to gauge my long run pace, and it tells me to go over 10.22 min/miles, but that seems a bit too slow. I had been going faster, but now I've managed to slow down quite a bit. I couldn't have gone much faster today though!

  • Tillstar im with you ...even though ive ran it last 3 years when i just watched video i thought wished i was doing it this year again...

  • Great video clip, didn't see myself though.

Frustratingly sitting with elevated ankle, balancing a bag of frozen peas. Argh, hopefully ankle not a problem for 20 miler subday???
  • Evening all, you may already have discovered this website folks.....but for serious runners it's like running-porn, check out some of the articles:

Not sure I have the technology to make the link work, you may have to copy it into your browser.
  • Anyone with tight or niggly calves, look at this:

    http://www.kinetic-revolution.com/dynamic-calf-warm-up-for-running/

    I'm definitely trying this!!
  • Good effort, Toby, and a decent time too!

Hi Liz - welcome and good luck!

I did a hilly 9 miles round the block this morning but, again, didn’t really enjoy it. My legs feel like they’ve got no stamina at the moment. I’ve a cough and have felt a bit under the weather this week, so it’s probably all related. 20 miles to do tomorrow.

Those dynamic warm up look good, Picklelilly. Might have to give it a go.

  • Does anybody have any experiences taking echinacea in the build up to marathons? Recommend or not?

Wordslinger, know how you feel, very fatigued this week. Hope I bounce back next week.
  • My advice (sorry to jump into the forum having said nothing for months!) is to rest if your body tells you to. I did a fast 20 last weekend and have done virtually nothing this week, because I need to recover. Running long really puts a strain on the body and you don't lose fitness by taking some days to work and limber up, but at this point in training, you risk injury. It's just not worth it - I've learnt that the hard way in the years I've been running.
