The Jessica Ennis appreciation thread

Jess is fat? You've got to be kidding.

She's gawjuss. As in drop-dead. If not a cert for gold at least in with a damn good shout.

Am I right? Of course I am.

if jess is fat then the rest of the world is obese.

being a sheffielder and athlete i have seen jess in person, trained on same track & once lost over 200m on the woodbourn road track and her BFP is low, very low

what a joke

  • What a stupid thing for someone to say, and if this is genuinely coming from someone within UKA then UKA needs to consider whether that person should be in the role they're in! Jess is a multi-eventer which means she constantly has to compromise to be in the best condition for all events. If she was a single event specialist then maybe she's not the perfect shape for some of them, but the simple fact is that she has to run, jump and throw, and to describe her as fat is just plain ridiculous.

Combine this with that story about the triathlete who retired because of eating disorders and is it any wonder that we have difficulties getting girls to do sport.

  • Yeh, I would.

Seriously though, she always seems like a genuinely nice lass. Last week she was especially gracious when some Mancunians failed to count to '10'. And that accent takes me back to my student days.

    Jess is fantastic!

  • I just read the report of this in the paper... what an unhelpful comment on just about every level. Not just for Ennis but for the rest of us, and all those young girls who will hopefully see her excelling this summer and get a bit more active and a bit more enthusiasitc about sport as a result.

  • BOF I totally agree. My daughter is very keen on athletics and sport in general but she's already started commenting that her legs are 'too big' and she doesn't want to get fat, she's 10 and a beanpole. It makes me sad that she's talking like that already, she's not even a teenager!

Jess is a tremendous athlete and a great role model for girls. It frustrates me that people seem to focus more on a female athlete's weight and appearance rather than their performance. You don't seem to get the same level of scrutiny on male athletes.

and this is on the back of this week's other "weight" story that a top class GB triathlete, Hollie Avil, has retired aged 22 following severe depression - all prompted by some twunt who suggested to her a couple of years ago (aged 18 - just made the GB squad for Beijing) that if she wanted to be World Champ she'd need to lose weight. this sent her into an eating disorder spiral, followed by stress fractures (poor diet), severe depression and now retirement.

it's a fine line trod at the top level of any sport and stupid comments like this are way out of order

  • She has a six pack. What a twunt.

  • image Whoever say's bad things about our Jess will find half a million sheffielder That's deedar's if your from other parts of the shire with pitchforks and burning touch's throwing henderson's relish at there front door.

To surgest that her weight is an issue is both stupid and also quite orfensive given the amount of b*llock's ladies are already subjected to by the media and general perceptions they bombarded to in this country. I'm sure this will be shown to be cr*p come the summer to in Jess's case. Only question is will it be gold or sliver she gets?

  • I haven't seen the same comments being reported from officials regarding Harry Aikines-Aryeetey who must be carrying several stones of excess muscle in every race.

    Jess Ennis is fat?

Dear God I wish I was as fat as her!

  • In fairness they had to cut a wall out of her house so that they could get her to hospital !!

    Opps Sorry wrong story

  • image Do you think any fool will be conplaining that she's fat at the moment?

Imagine how much faster she could have run if she weren't such a lardy girl! image

Actually, it's surprising that no-one has yet come out and said that it's unkind, unfair and demoralising to fat, unfit, couch potatoes to keep putting all these slim, athletic healthy people on the telly, and that their body shapes are unrealistic and unachievable for most people.

Fit, slim athletic people shouldn't be allowed in the olympics, it's not fair - how are the lard-arses ever supposed to win anything*??

(*make darts an olympic sport, perhaps?)

  • Louise Hazel and Katarina Johnson-Thompson......I see a nice little supply line here.

Must be something about multi eventing image

I think she looks absolutely stunning and her performance today was fantastic....

  • I will be watching her in the 800m tomorrow, live, did I mention I have tickets for tomorrow night, I'll reserve my judgement till then, you know how some people look bigger on tellyimage

I'll check Mo as well to see if he has piled the pounds onimage

I've just sneakily watched the hurdling on t'internet - brilliant!

  • MuttleyMuttley ✭✭✭

Her chances are looking pretty good. And so are those abs ... ye gods, I could do my washing on them!

  • She is doing well yes, but there are all our other Team GB athletes who have performed outstandingly. a thread dedicated to just one athlete is slightly unfair me thinks.....our cycling and rowing girls are far better in my opinion.

    Johnson-Thompson did well image

  • johnson-thompson is the one to watch and deserves more attention than shes had

  • Outstanding!! Amazing achievement in itself but I think to perform so well under so much pressure is an Olympic feat in its own right.

  • CindersCinders ✭✭✭

    Well done Jess, amazing.

Johnson-Thompson will get her time, she's only a youngster image
