Forum Spam: Apology and Fixes

  • I prefer jelly  image

Seren witches don't like jelly and cream - get with it

I think Meldy will be a great moderator - she's the only person I know from here that seems to genuinely like everyone, and she's measured and reasonable

her taste in prime ministers leaves something to be desired though image

Is it just Meldy that's a moderator? (Good Luck with the spamimage).

  • She's not a moderator, she's a spam witch. image

No! What's your motivation for wanting to do it? Let RW deal with it, they're not paying you but still making profit.

Will they share that profit with you?

I think you're being a bit ridiculous here.  I've not contributed much to this discussion, but let's suppose RW had approached me with ''PhilPub, you seem like a level-headed kinda chap who doesn't get too mixed up in all the cliquey bollocks on here.  Would you consider being a moderator purely with a remit to clean up all the obvious spam?''  I think I'd be tempted to think about it, partly out of feeling privileged to be asked anyway, partly for the warm fuzzy feeling of contributing to the communal good, and also because, truth be told, the spam pisses me off a  bit and it would be quite nice to wipe it away when I want.  image

I've got no idea why you need to be so cynical about someone's motivation having been approached rather than putting themselves forward and I don't think there's any need to be so confrontational, when you clearly have a beef with RW about something completely unrelated.

Whoops, I just got more involved in all the cliquey bollocks...

    I think it's worth a go.

But there should be a super mod who has infinite power over all users, posts, mods and has the power of life or death. God, if you will.

I vote that that job goes to me.image

No  JB I asked first and I've bought my own Taser ! However I'm happy to let you be my deputy if your interested ?

  • ADMINS...........

Rather than setup moderation, have you considered switching the signup to something that Xrumer (spambot) will not crack. ie either a java based captcha or alternatively a puzzle type (which will be a better option). neither of these work at the moment. In fact in the current version recaptcha isnt working properly either.

If you take the time to understand how Xrumer works you can easily stop any spam from coming through at the signup stage. Even adding the option of no links until 100 posts will make things harder for the spam to get through.

  • Does this mean I have to can the nob jokes in future?
  • Only if you don't learn how to spell knob properly JBimage
  • Good point, well made.
  • Meldy and the other chosen ones - good luck.

I still think it's a terrible idea, but hate the game not the player.  Tangol is right (and as I and others have said countless times before) it should be fixed at source, not left to the users to clean it up.

I believe that in these circumstances the spelling is in fact correct !

  • Of course I am secretly quite gutted not to have been chosen to wield the Delete Key of Destiny, but I'm not bitter.

    Oh no.

I'd like to know if RW are just going to only use user moderation to deal with the issue or if they are going to actually do their jobs and resolve the core issue?

I always wonder why RW allow people to slate them on their own forums! If i was RW, one click and you'd be gone!

  • I'd rather constructive feedback, not slating, to sycophancy any day.  Ok, most days; some days a bit of moral boosting lying goes down a treatimage

  • Great move. Good luck Meldy.

(a moderator on another forum who happily does it for nothing and without any ulterior motive)

...and this is why you've not been asked to be a mod image

  • Can I just clarify that I don't think mods automatically have ulterior motives (though I did say in a previous post that I didn't necessarily trust judgement - read on).  I think people that contact mods might.  And that under pressure from others, the line of the mods remit can become blurred and that's where the creep can happen.  I really hope that the mods here don't come under that pressure to do more than remove auto spam, or that if they do, they tell the other person to feck off.  Something I'm sure Meldy will do with aplomb.

Plus of course than RW sort their security out and catch 99.9% of the stuff at the door.

But most of them are robots.  Wouldn't they have an unfair advantage?  image

  • When was the last time you saw a robot on a bike eh?   image

  • Them clever peeps at Honda are working on it I'm sure.  It's the swim they would have the most trouble with.

  • But in answer to your question - in the film Prometheous (I struggle with the line between fantasy and reality sometimes)
