Vachery Triathlon - Cranleigh

Just stumbled across this event,  sprint,  std and cross-tri events in a lake that I didn't even know existed despite it being on one of my regular bike loops,  anyone interested?

  • Ask me next week!

Sprint then lunch then cross tri sound a laugh!
  • If I had an MTB that might be an idea Dave. image

Looks good and it's local, so I might be up for the road standard one.

I saw it too. But alas we have a club pub run crawl that weekend.

    Mwahahahahaha FF. #onethingidontmiss
  • 'gis a job HC

  • Could be very tempted by this... just need to work a way of getting there or face the ride down at 4am!

was vey interested in the x-tri but the dates clash with another event we're doing locally although we did toy with the idea of doing that (sprint tri) and then zooming up to Cranleigh to do Vachery as that's an afternoon KO.  in fact when they publish the start times, we might still......image

x-tri is good fun if you have a MTB - it's more low key than a road tri and you'll get a right mix of competitors - from pros like Stannard to old farts like us.  we did the XTT tri last year (Nat Champs as it happened - we both gonged) and Vachery has replaced that this year as there are some groundworks taking place on the XTT courses (it's army land) which has put it out of bounds this year.

  • I must admit FB I would absolutely love to have a go at Xtri. No mountain bike and no space for a new bike though means it will have to wait quite a few years unfortunately image

  • They say the course isn't technical - so get a bike on ebay. I have a non-sus MTB that came off ebay for £37. It is old but works fine and would do the job, if I take the tag-a-long, bike trailer, child seat and pannier racks off it.

However I will be doing the race on a £2k Specialized EPIC that doesn't get enough use but is a perfect XC racer.

Unfortunately I'm finding it difficult to find a room to rent with 3 bikes as it is... never mind throwing a fourth in to the equation. Could you not just run the bike split?

  • At £37 you could buy one, use it, and sell it the next week.  You could even make a profit on it.

a hardtail would be a better bike for these races - a few at XTT used cyclocross bikes as it was dry but the skinnier tyres would make it harder if it was muddy.   a full sus just adds weight you don't need and that's something we noticed last year

  • What would happen if I wanted to do this event on a fast hybrid Halfords bike.....? Just trying to work with what I've got.

  • I would say take the reply above as your answer ...

Worth a try with some knobbly tyres if they would fit on??

  • So who is up for this?

Does anyone fancy two Sprints in one day - If so the organiser has said he is willing to give us 50% off the cheaper of the two.

    • Road Sprint
    • Picnic, Light Brunch or Canapes
    • Off Road Sprint

It will be sunny and you get to dive off a Pontoon like the fast girls and boys!

  • Up for one of them.

Possibly on the double......I've never done a sprint. I bet they hurt. And there is the hassle of getting two bikes to the event.

  • Not if you can't go fast!
  • Sounds amazing.  Gutted I can't make it image

  • I'm quite tempted to give the Xsprint a go.  Not fit enough to do a double image

  • Have given in to temptation image

  • No - just the cross for a laugh - I hope!

  • Are you gonna use the Tri-X or the MTB?

  • Oooh, the road sprint starts at 7.30.  I could do that and be back for my appointment later image

  • Do it!

I'm now considering the sprint instead of the Oly, so I can be back with the family. Supposedly driveable in an hour from here too.

    Go for it!

Probably the MTB - unless it's bone dry and baking hot every day for the next two weeks

  • The single track bits could be fun on a tri cross. You get to practice your 'Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee'
  • I'm in imageimageimageimageimage

had to opt for the sprint road wotsit so off at 7.30am.  A veritable lie in image

  • I think i'm going to throw my hat in for the road sprint, don't want to take up too much time of the family on bank hol weekend... will check for places tomorrow morning

    Cat?
