A Physio's blog about managing your running injuries

I've been posting in the Health and Injury forum for some time and thought I'd share the blog with a wider audience and spread the word a little.

I'm a runner and a physio and have combined the two togther to make a site to help people manage their running injuries.

  • Haven't had the chance to read all of it as there's quite a lot to read.  You've obviously put a lot of work into it.  When I get the chance, I'll look at it in a bit more depth.  Just one slight problem.  The links in the main body of the message don't work.  They just take you to a non-existent page on the RW site with the message "Page not found".  The link at the bottom of your message works though.

  • Oh, that's annoying. Thanks for letting me know. Had issues with making the links last night. All looked good on my PC but not working today for some reason!

    So what does the phizzy say about dive bombing over tree roots and landing on ones ribs. How long til ful recovery or donoughts forever.

    Also chickens, no where do you mention the hazrad of chickens.

    I do like pie though.

  • I am interested to know your thoughts on running with a prosthetic hip (titanium short shaft with a ceramic head, not cemented). The chief surgeon who operated on me in the sports clinic said I can begin easy running training in 6 months time, but the doctor in charge of the rehab clinic where I am said he would advise me strongly against running, especially competitively. Any thoughts? Competitive sport has been an important part of my lifestyle since I was 11 years old and triathlon for the last 20 years! Not running has led to depression, weight gain and a spike in blood pressure.

    Ironwolf, if your surgeon says you can run then it should be ok. Ultimately though it comes down to your choice. You have to way up the risks and benefits. The risk is that running may reduce the life of the prosthetic and lead you to have revision surgery sooner than you'd like. Your surgeon could tell you how likely this is. I'm sure you know the benefits! As you say above, helps mood, manages weight and blood pressure and is an important part of your lifestyle.

    If you do return to running I would do lots of work on your glutes as they help to support the hip area. There is also a blog about this that looks good;

  • Thanks so much. I have every intention of running again, although as my surgeon said, no more marathons. I have already run 45 so no problem with not doing any more. I will take a look at the website you mention. Thanks again.

  • Returned to running after a few weeks off due to a calf strain.  Keen to restart so just jumped in at pre-injury mileage and intensity and within 2 weeks I seem to have developed patellofemoral pain. 
    Found your blog whilst researching this and have to say it looks excellent.  Will defininitely spend a bit of time reading through some (all) of the articles.
