  • swim a bit

    drink lots of beer

    Simples

  • Beer is carbs, right?

  • Hehe, yes beer is carbs but also alcohol which spares fat! Is that the advice of a seasoned ironman, Dave?

  • Stoppit Dave, you're making me laugh.image

  • I think Amy's calling you old Dave!!

  • She must know him then  !!!

  • Teehee

Many a good tune player on an old fiddle
  • Dave, I'm going to write that out and stick it to the fridge as my IM mantra image

  • What drink beer

    I'm old

Or tunes on old fiddles ?
  • the research has already been done by the pirates............instead of nutrition and training you just need to HTFU and JFDIimage

  • See thats a Uni education for you (I assume that University of Hertfordshire was Tring Poly once upon a time ?), structure, training...

...You'll be telling me next to bin the pork pie on the bike, and not to nick guinness off Cake during the run

  • oooh I live pretty close to Herts, it's where my son is hoping to go and planning to IM next year... might take a look, assuming it has to be Barcelona Amy?

Actually perhaps I should read the link first!

  • The research programme is expected to start in January 2013, and will involve a monitored 6 month preparation period before undertaking an 8 week study prior to the Barcelona Challenge Triathlon in late September 2013.
If you are interested in taking part – firstly check if the following criteria apply to you:

    1) You must be aged 18-50 years (both men and women welcome)
    2) Have not undertaken an Ironman Triathlon or equivalent before
    3) Anything less than Olympic distance triathlon is fine, but not within the past 2 years.
    4) Consider yourself ‘recreationally active’ ie: train 5) Consider yourself to be healthy and able to take part in Ironman level training
    6) Be available to take part in the 2013 Barcelona Challenge event (www.challenge-barcelona.es) at a reduced rate.

    What to do now:

To express your interest in taking part in the research programme, and to find out more, please email Dr Justin Roberts: j.d.roberts@herts.ac.uk. Closing date: 14th September 2012.

  • Are you trying to tell us you can read?
    1. Check
    2. Check
    3. Pardon?
    4. Check
    5. Check
    6. Hmmmm

So lets get this right, you think someone from the Tri forum with IronMan aspirations to be available in late 2013 for an IM distance Triathlon BUT they cannot have done anything longer than a sprint distance tri before and even then they can't have done one in the last 2 years?!? and then we can be a research guinea pig to particpate in a foreign IM at a "reduced" rate but cover other costs ourselves?

Am I reading this right or am I missing something?

No smartass that only proves I can cut and paste not read... and anyway, I was posting the key information in the thread so those with smartphones and other link problematic phones and browsers could possibly read the key criteria without having to worry about the link image

  • Gas - I hate to be annoying (well I love it really) but I fit all the criteria - my olly this year wasn't really an Olly as they cancelled the swim. That and the fact I've booked Lanza......not to mention I like Dave and Seren's training advice image...... but apart from that, I'd be perfect!

Not completely, people can have done a triathlon before but ideally not an Olympic distance one in the last two years. This is not a set requirement but a guideline as we are looking for recreationally active individuals (as there are going to be VO2max criteria to meet). The actual training plan will start in January but obviously people will be doing some training before that and people will be required to be tested in the lab every two months. The testing itself would cost hundreds if you wanted to monitor your VO2max and lactate threshold during this period. Immune measures are also likely to be taken and cardiovascular parameters. You will get entry for Barcelona at a reduced rate but will need to pay for costs associated with the race. Through the training period there should be nutrition products available for free.

Although many people on this forum are likely to be very experienced triathletes and may not be interested in this study there might be some people who have dabbled in triathlon and see completing an ironman as a great challenge and may like to participate? I hope this explains things? If you want further info drop Justin an email (address on the info page)...

  • As I didn't start racing IM til I was 50 I'll pack up my fiddle and go off for a pint

Amy it does help - email sent image

  • If anyone is interested in this it's not too late to show it, closing date is 14th September and people will be invited in for selection testing in October...

  • Too old, going to get lashed with DExSpimage

  • all of these types of studies in the UK are ageist to the over 50's.  it's something to do with insurance - the old "what if" scenario if you peg it on a treadmill.  bloody insurance actuaries need lining up and shooting
