I think it's quite arrogant to demand more coverage for the pirates actually. I don't think us being the biggest club there means that we should receive more attention than any other.

However, I do feel very strongly that it was biased towards the male athletes taking part, with insufficient coverage of the women's race.  This is regardless of the fact that I happen to know the winning female and she happens to be a pirate.

The lap of the lake on the bike was at the start, not the end, if you recall?

  • It started to rain I think about 12 miles from the end of the bike for me and I am pretty sure it had stopped by the time I got back to T2

  • I agree with Mouse that more coverage for the pirates was not needed............but I was disgusted with the level of coverage of the ladies race............at a time when the olympics etc is trying to give equal coverage and importance to womens sports.........for the few seconds of coverage on the programme it wasn't worth it......no mention of the several changes in race leaders..........just sad that it gave the impression that the womens race isn't important..........maybe done by the same group that didn't nominate chrissie for Sporty last year

  • Anyway well done ladies and well done One Step Beyond, both of you are great image

Hail was around 13h30 I think and Rain soon after... I went out on the run on tail end of hail and beginning of rain
  • did look like poor coverage of the women's race.

  • I remember getting soaked on the bike. Alot.

There is a clip of me mincing on the river path, my motion looked similar to Pistorius' running. It reminded me how much hip pain I was getting. image. The bulk of my footage was at the end where I was talking to Chili in the stands at the end, hardly the athletic prowess I wanted to show off!

I'm very pro-equality in sport. What sets the Olympics apart from the racing we do is that the competition is on a level field, i.e. men vs men, women vs women. So when the 1st woman crossed the line in her given race, she IS the winner, rather than the 1st woman being the 7th or 18th competitor.

Of course, nobody likes to be chicked image

  • I've not watched it yet but like Mouse don't have any expectation that the production company should show more pirates than any other 'club' in particular,  ultimately it's their decision to edit how they see fit to generate the story they want to take out of the 50 mins of coverage that they have.
The whole nature of the majority of the media is to create as much of a sensationalist story as possible from what they have to play with.........am just glad to see some other sport on tv apart from the glut of football that the next 9-10 months will be taken up with image

  • the thing about the coverage, wether we are tallking about the lack of ladies race coverage, pirate coverage or whatever, one thing that kind of stands out for me is the  lack of pre race buzz and the real atmosphere that made that day, a day to remember. I know there was a bit of pre race interviews but not enough. Anyone that was a part of the pirate crew or any other group should know what i mean.

  • Maybe I didn't express myself very well - my point was not that the pirates should get more coverage than any other group, just that they in particular do a great job of showing that the ordinary person can tackle tri and especially IM. I would have preferred a bit more coverage of the determination of Mr/Mrs "average" to finish.

  • I didnt have any expectations of the coverage being weighted towards the pirates, but it was extremely dissappointing.

Struck me as something made on a shoestring and a collection of 'bits to camera' and clips thrown together.

  • Despite getting 2 guest appearances I too would have liked so much more of the "Mr and Mrs Average - if you want to do it you can" type stuff and less of the pro / expected winners stuff as at the end of the day most people watching are going to be Mr and Mrs Average **

And I would have loved to have seen more of Melli and the ladies race - although women only made up about 15% of the field I believe, seeing the ladies racing on tv both at the sharp end and the BOPpers can only encourage others to dip their toes into tri

They were also inaccurate in their editing in as much as my name was attached to a woman I've never seen before in my life!!

** not that any pirate I've ever met could be described as "average" - at least in terms of character image

Oh well - at least the race was shown and C4 have been doing half hour ironman progs every Sunday which is good to see compared to previous years where there has been even less coverage

  • I thought the Youtube video from 2011 gave a better feel for the atmosphere then the tv coverage...even the finish chute felt empty watching it.

  • There's a 1 second cameo of my back 100 metres away as Wiltshire went down the finish chute and I was passing on my first run lap image

The coverage really didn't give a feel for the atmosphere. On the plus side, I don't think I heard the word "gruelling" used once image.

  • I watched it and delayed heading out on my early LSR.  I had no great expectations, therefore I was not disappointed.  I have watched this series on an odd Sunday morning on Ch4 and seldom am I inspired by what I see.

The atmosphere was not captured and the coverage was disjointed and in the wrong order.  I was trying to remember if I rode round the lake at the end of the bike image.

I got one fleeting glimpse of the back of my head on the bike, so my burgeoning ego was satisfied image.

Personally, I was happy to see the Karen Green charity guy being featured and, as usual for me in such circumstances, I came over a bit emotional at the end when his very young (motherless) kids ran out to greet him image

This too. Though filming those moments would probably take a fair few cameramen.

The commentary on the day had a similar kind of focus. As said elsewhere, it'd have been great to see more of the women's race as that is where the challenges happened and places changed. Even if many of the viewers knew who the winners were already, the women's race was more interesting. Maybe they were hoping HW was going to spectacularly hit the wall on camera and then battle it out to finish.

  • i didnt think it was too bad really - about par for the course for most of these.

A lot of focus on the mens race - I guess the big name drew that.

A lot of focus on the relay race - bit unnecessary really - relays easy !image

A lot of focus on the human interest angle - the Karen Green foundation ? Understandable really.

The womens race wasnt covered very well - poor Emma not popping up until she'd won it. They could have done a quick rundown of the likely athletes before the race and edited out the ones who didnt perform.

I'd not say the pirates were edited out or anything - there were plenty of us shown - if i was watching I'd probably be curious as to why there were so many of us or what club it was. They could have covered that.

  • You can order a copy of the DVd of the website for £13....bet loads of us moaning will still buy it.

And compared to the price of some of the photos at races isn't that bad

So come on own up, whos buying it.

  • I wont be.

The interesting part for me is that my bike is in the background of a lot of the interviews - leaning up against a post whilst I'm registering.

I left a certain Cougie Jr in charge of looking after it - and strangely - he's nowhere in sight on any of the footage. He's so in trouble.....

  • I think overall it was poor, it's not an IM branded race so only the one Elite atherlete their. Unfortunitly it became the HW show, they really missed a trick I thought. This is a non elitist race so they should of made more of that. The build up was poor no atmostfere, the swim coverage was poor with such a mass start they could of shown a bit more of the hussle and bustle of the first couple of minutes of swim so non ow swimmers could get to see how hard it is. Think only the lead man HW and first relay woman was shown getting out the swim? Like has already been said just HW and second man shown jurying race on bikes and run with the relay team cyclist to who was battered at the end of bike. The charity bloke got good coverage which was good, I think I seen the winning lady but wasn't sure cause it was a quick shot on camara and no proper mention or interview like HW got all programme.

I said at the begining that this was a great chance to show what a great race this is and how many joe average people do this event and what a challenge it is for them. It should of been covered more like the London marathon is with more random on the race interviews of everyday people. If I didn't know what a IM distance race is or what's involved then I still wouldn't. I also thought it was disrespectful to keep saying how HW hadn't needed to train for outlaw and that never done distances over 50k on bike and never run marathon at all before and only entered two weeks before event got a bike he had never rode before. That doesn't inspire me to want to do the race. Tell me more about the lady that had a pirate top on who won the ladies race? Did she not have to train either?? Very very disappointed. Glad outlaw got on Tv but they didn't do the race or the race organisers justice.
  • Cougie that's sooo funny about you boy and bike lol
  • Speaking of that youtube video...can anyone tell me who the group are or the name of the song used in it please?

  • Its Biffy Clyro - Boom, Blast and Ruin.

  • ah...cheers Flyers.....image

I agree with comment on bad editing and low standard.
I would like to know who the kissing pirates were?  He stopped and kissed her with a cheesy commentary about how he needs to stop that and get on with the race.

I featured for a nano second behind the Mick Green at the far turn point of the run, alas I was walking, but did spot 3 priate friends.

  • Bendy Jan and Slummo. Its OK - they are a couple !

I think thats worse !!!  You should be able to get away with murder at the end of an IM  (Just dont tell Suzie)

Why did they spend so much time focussing on the relay teams? I don't really see the point of doing a relay as I understand that Triathlon is all about putting the 3 disciplines together. They also kept going on about how good that chap on the bike was I admit he was good but it's a lot easier to cycle if you haven't done the swim and can go all out whereas the rest of the field need to keep something back for 26.2 miles of running.
  • The point of a relay is so that people who cannot for whatever reason do the whole thing can still take part and enjoy the experience. For instance, both my OH and myself are now retired from IM, him because of bad knees, me because I have a titanium hip joint and can't run any more marathons. But neither of us are willing to quit racing, he is a great swimmer and I can swim or bike for a team.

Cheers for the info, I can see how you can benefit being able to do a sport you love by still being able to participate via a relay.

I think I was probably frustrated that the TV coverage seemed to spend a large percentage of its coverage on the relay teams that were made up of "specialists" we hardly saw the female winner let alone 3rd place man or 2nd or 3rd female.
  • I "ran" the relay leg, I'm rubbish at all three... It was a fantastic experience and it's a great intro into long distance triathlon, agree coverage was wasted on relay team... Relays are great for participants and the sport but I don't think should have been covered to the extent they were
