  • RTTB - I'm home safe and sound and nursing sore legs for a SMASHING GUT BUSTING PERSONAL BEST!

    1.44.33 - over 10 minutes off the personal best. Hooray - i came 1787 out of 12000!

OK Run To The Beat- the pros - It's a great course, its fast, its scenic and its a good atmosphere, its in London so a decent mass paricipation event for people who didnt get into VLM and dont want to travel far. Music and soundsystems along the route - really give you a lift.

the cons - the marshalling is pretty poor. the bag check is a TOTAL disaster. the pens are non existent. the segregation of spectators / participants is really bad at the end. Its a mish mash. No water or energy drink at the end for a lot of the slower finishers. no goody bags or snacks at all. More importantly no foil blanket for freezing cold runners who then had to wait for ages - up to 90 mins in some queues to get their bags back so they could put some layers on.

Oh yeah its £46 entry fee and you get a nike branded running t-shirt with your number printed on. If you want to wear a charity top they give a paper race number scribbled in magic marker JOKE. i HATE NIKE Won't do that event anymore until they stop hosting it.

But, I had a FANTASTIC run today. The main thing is - i went out HARD. Was really congested at the begininng (due to the pen business) left my friend after the first half a mile and pushed HARD all the way. kept pushing HARD and only looked at my watch on 12 miles (1.35) and then dug deep to hold my pace for the last bit. Wanted to skim under 1.50 so you can imagine i'm a little upbeat about it! The training in recent weeks after the GNR has paid off. Now i have to get serious and focus on doing the right things for Paris. No more thoughts of a half marathon sub 1.40 until march 3rd!

Jimbob - Amazing result, you must be well chuffed.

Fantastic Jimbob - really fantastic.  Not surprised you're elated.  So, how does that result fir with your Paris targets?

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

    Jimbob - great job!!

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Well done Jimbob, and welcome to the thread newbies great to have you along.

14 for me today and a 10 mile race in prospect next Sunday around Derwentwater in Keswick.

My claim to fame is that I can roll my stomach like a belly dancer. But I have to be pretty drunk to do it in public. I can also stick out my shoulder blades which most observes find pretty disgusting. Beat that!

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

I dont have to work that hard to roll my stomach - the rolls are built in and always there.

  • That's awesome going. Liked the idea of numbers printed onto the shirts, then I realised that means you're stuck having to wear that shirt, even if it doesn't fit you properly.

  • YM, D 'n' E: i am rather chuffed but must have a rest - i pushed it today. will take a week off and then knuckle down for serious approach to Marathon training. If that 1.44 time is my new benchmark then Sub4 in Paris should be a target but the main thing there is a i turn up fit enough to have a decent crack at it. I will train for the sub4 and be very happy with anything below 4.16

  • Weedy - means you are advertising Nike - because thats what they WANT you to do for them above everything else (such a cynic)

  • hey..  really good run there jimbob...  sounds like a well focussed effort...  keep that mental attitude and out of trouble and sub-4 is on the cards for you..

  • DV - the sub4 over 26.2 is a different level mate.  I call myself a very exerienced half marathon runner - but very inexperienced at anything else. The half is a great distance. Paris will be only my second marathon so im being cautious. I want to enjoy it (if one can "enjoy" such an intense endurance session as a marathon)

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭
I think the biggest difference is that you can kinda go all out from the start in a half but the full requires some more restrained pacing initially. Having said that, if I can go sub4, just about anyone can.

Happy bday DLR. I'll be turning 52 whilest in London. Yikes.
  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

Well done, The Jimbob image 'Delighted for you.

  • JB - great time, fantastic pace.

Dannirr - quicker every year it seems! Btw, what an amazing collection of cars!
  • Dannir - if 8 min mile is my new benchmark on a half but i somehow manage 9min mile on a full, will i save energy by not going at 8mm so giving myself enough enrgy to finish 26 at 9mm? or will i just be running slower and still struggle? what i mean is - how much do i take off? 9mm will get you in at 3.55 right? should i be looking at really even pacing like that or should i go at 8.30 a mile leaving myself enough for the slow down in the last part of the race. today i think i could have maintained the fast pace i was doing for maybe 2 more miles max. Should i be doing LSRs at 9mm now?

  • JB - awesome!!!  You should be super super chuffed and it is looking good for paris...although I would disagree with Dannirr and say that not just anyone can go sub 4.  It takes a few posts on the Paris thread.image  now you get to choose your target approach...tell everyone or stick your fingers in your ears and go la la la laaa whenever anyone mentions it. image

Tartan is holed up in washington but isn't admitting to marine kidnapping...yet...they may have to escort her out of the city though image

  • yer majyer maj ✭✭✭

Jimbob - there will plenty more experienced along in a minute to advise you but if your target pace in Paris is 9 m/m then your LSR pace needs to be a lot slower than that.

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

Jimbob - as YM says, there are many better than me to advise you on pace and strategy. For me, an even pace from the start is best - if I bank time I slow down too much later. My measly brain can best cope with one thing: stay at this pace and dont overthink it.  But I do think your LSR, if you are aiming for a 9 mm overall, should be about 10 mm.

    Iain - thanks.

  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭
Jimbob - If your target marathon pace is 9mm then your long slow run pace should be between 30 seconds to one minute slower than that. Some plans will have you ramp up to target pace on the final few miles of the long run, but the majority of it shouldn't be at target pace.

You should be doing other runs in training at target pace, as well as other sessions that build speed.

Going on your how times between half and marathon compare. I set my half PB this year of 1:43. Earlier in the year I had set my marathon PB of 3:49. Roughly works out at 50 seconds per mile slower over the full distance compared to the half.
  • Thanks guys I think this thread has already helped me look at the way I train and helped me improve. And received support here from people who really get it.
  • Eggy - a couple of suggestions for those box sets, (assuming you've not already got them): The Shield. I adore it, from first episode to the last. Better than The Wire, which everyone fawns about. Also, if you don't mind subtitles and are already a fan of The Shield, try the French crime thriller Braquo. Two series so far and it is excellent, action filled mayhem on the mean streets of Paris...
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Iain - Cheers I've not seen The Shield. I was swithering between that and Breaking Bad, which also seems to get good feedback. I'm one of those folk that fawns over The Wire, which alongside The Sopranos, Band of Brothers and Rome are series that I've watched numerous times and love. Add that to my recent Game of Thrones addiction and I'm a total HBO fanboy!

Although my dirty secret boxset love is Friday Night Lights. I actually have a Friday Night Lights fridge magnet! image

  • Morning Kaz.

Well done The JB, nice result.
  • JB - Excellent, you are well on for a sub 4image

TD - lol what were/are you doing up???

I have just spent a whole hour on the elipitical trainer, first use that has had in a long time. Followed by some core work, amazing didn't hurt!!

I have been up most of the night, think its going back to work today or the dos appointment keeping me from sleep.........

Shower time.....got two children to get organised for school and I have to be at work for 7.30.........image But I do finish at 3.15!!! The joy of eldest working after school, I get to finish early as no childcare!!image

  • Eggy - don't get me wrong, series 2 and 4 of The Wire are some of the best TV ever made but I think The Shield was consistently excellent throughout. It is different but brilliant. Also, Breaking Bad is ace! It's unbelievably cynical and cruel. There are, at least, likeable characters in The Shield!

For the others - running features in both these series at some stages (usually running away from the cops/drug dealers!)
  • Am watching The Wire series 2 at the moment. Up to ep5. Dominic West does a brilliant job of being a Yank, especially as he is a posh boy. Kaz. Couldn't sleep. I worked late & my brain was obviously still processing stuff.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

All tv is evil...seem to watch very little of it these days.

  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

+1 for the Shield. I think it was the best piece of writing I'd seen on the TV since..maybe, Our Friends in the North. The central figure is amoral..and yet..image I'll add 'Spiral' ( Engrenages)..better than Braquo , after a shaky start..* Right , that's enough, ATM. You've got your trainers on. Get out there.*

P.S.Series 2 of the Wire was heartbreaking...

  • I hardly ever watch TV..   I do like Top Gear and am looking forward to the new series of Californication that will air in the US in January but probably not be here until the Spring..   I also like The Apprentice.
