Maus - sounds like you need to do a few on and off drills. Going through the motions of brake, clip out etc etc and cleats may need adjustment to be really loose until you get the hang of it. I blame the coach!image I got some knarly bruises for my first few rides but you'll ne amazed at how quickly you pick it up.

Happy birthday ATM, hope you've had a good one (and thanks for your email, gratefully received!).

MM - Ouch.  And ouch again.

Eggy/Kaz - You may have heard the "Phew" I let out when I read it was to be the 10 miler of Millport.  I know my neighbours did.

So I managed 3 and 4 miles respectively on Wednesday and Friday, but during my 7-mile effort today I felt my knee again and it's plenty sore now.  Felt good in every other respect but it's becoming the bane of my running life.

A quick reminder to the injured about considering not only options for physio to sort out your current problems, but also for taking the opportunity to reconsider HOW you run and avoiding those problems in the future.  Are you sure that you have good and efficient technique...?   Perhaps spending some time looking at technique and your biomechanics will be worthwhile..

Think about how your feet touch the ground, your posture, leg rotation, knee lift etc...

Think about your choice of shoes and the terrain you are running on....

None of these things take much time, but they may avoid injuries in the future.

I think many running related injuries are self-induced from issues with technique that can be corrected.

Happy birthday! Hope mr atm is treating this day with the reverence it deserves.

Gotta love smug Sunday mornings where the lsr is already in the bag. Iain - pace was NOT speedy 6:15 min per km.

RS - that's fab pace for a 27k. Wow, so far from that currently. 9 weeks? Blimey.

    Loved Top Gear. Very naughty.

My running has been plagued with niggles since Paris -  groin, hamstring, calf, heel. All at the same time! Feels like I am limping along, very slowly. Not sure what is going on but it's very frustrating. Think it may all stem from an old lower back injury? S'pose I should seek help.

Thanks DV, a lot of sense in that post.

I know I overpronate quite a bit, and I'm flat-footed.  I've been sent to the podiatrist to ultimately get insoles (NHS-because-I'm-poor) to help sort that out.

As for the many other points to consider, I'll get my thinking cap on and keep the self-indulgence off the forum.

Orbutt - that sucks. Same problem as you had earlier this year?

    MM - ouch.

Wohlf - is it ITB bother causing it?

    Happy birthday ATM!

16 Hotlanta miles today with BRF, thus slow but still fun.  Included a challenge up a hill from some young guy we had seen several times on the three laps we had already done of Stone Mountain (5 mile loops).  So, with me at 15 miles already done, and him with 6 miles done he tells me, off we went.  I kept pace with him to the halfway point feigning some fatigue, then I could not help myself and let out a "you not gonna let an old guy beat you, are you?" and off I went.  Legs burned like hell the last 0.1 mile but he never caught me image  I know it's stupid, but fun none the less.

It's not stupid Dannirr. It's compulsory.... Need to keep the kids in their place

Wohlf - you're in Edinburgh, aren't you? Suggest you contact this lot. They're not NHS, but I paid a lot less for orthotics from them than I've heard other people paying. Don't be put off by the old ladies in reception getting their corns sorted, they also deal with professional athletes.

DV - great advice. I know that I don't run with good and efficient technique and it's something I'll have to work on. I think a lot of the problem is in my head as, subconsiously, I'm running in a way to puts less strain on parts of me that have cause previous problems.  However, I think that this has resulted in more strain on those parts.

I know that my heel lift needs addressing and I also think that I need to get my ar5e into gear (RS mad me aware of that one).

Running - so simple yet so complicatedimage

Weedy - same calf but slightly different part.

Wohlf - I've flat footed to but I don't really want to go down the insole route. I can't help think that it would be like shoving a beer mat under a wobbly table, only for it to wobble in another direction. Let us know how you get on.

  • Options

I know orthotics get a bad wirte up, but I can't do without them due to something in my ankles??

arSe into gear.....I like that one! I don't know if its just me but I am finding that if I conciously try and not lean forward when I am running, engage my core to stay nice and 'tall', I can feel my glutes working and I automatically lift my feet more?? But then I  am weird! One thing someone else pointed out is that I don't drive my arms forward but back???

    Gorgeous sunny day here..........just now!!image????

I know my running form would be viewed as awful by anyone critiquing it. Any video evidence seems to suggest a Herman Munster on fast forward running style rather than a Kenyan gazelle running style!

Paging Dr. Moore. Mark Lanegan is doing an acoustic tour in November. Not playing in Glasgow or Newcastle, but I may be tempted to head to the land of salt and sauce for that one. I guess that means he's not playing with QotSA on their tour though!

my running form resembles that of a cheeky market trader that sells stolen goods and is being chased by the MET through the back streets of the urban jungle. The foot strike is OK but the arm movement is a bit like great Uncle Bob's drunken impression of the twist at my cousins wedding, and the posture is so bad it's terrible and almost laughable especially when i am trying to run fast.

Interesting timing for all this, as I made a decision about my running yesterday....5 days of running per week is, I am almost certain, too much for me.  This niggle never really clears up, but it is manageable.  So for the forseeable future my Tuesday recovery runs are going to be done on the bike, to see if that makes a difference.

I felt much better this morning - I think it had been subconsciously stressing me.  In fact, it was Orbutt saying a few posts back that I was probably running in a way that guards my psoas niggle that really made me think about it image.  I concentrated on my gait this morning and although it was a demanding tempo run it all felt much better.  I worked very hard on changing my gait earliuer this year and I've let it slip a bit since Paris.

    So....sub 4 on 4 runs a week?  We'll see....

Maus - you need some bump cream for that.  If we were on fb, Mr Maj would offer you his Unction That Cures All Ills....

JB you just made me snort my coffee.... image

Kaz - in the world of Chi, driving your arms back is exactly what you're meant to do - it made a huge difference when I started doing it.  Apart from when you're going up hill - drive them forwards than...where helterskelter?  She did a Chi course, I'm very temped to give it a shot as some of the techniques seem to really suit me.

Weedy - Can you add me for the Glasgow half marathon (Great Scottish Run) on October 6th.

  • Options
    DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

Weedy - can you please change my Oct 13 from Chicago to Steamtown Marathon. I have changed as Steamtown gives me the best chance at a PB.

Orbutt - it seems like that calf has been an issue for a long, long time. So, I'm going to suggest something that might seem a little radical - but has undoubtably worked for me:  go minimalist. Zero drop shoes with no extra support. Might even try Vibrams image. It saved my running totally after having leg / ITB issues for years that forced me to stop running completely. And that was after every running store / specialist had told me what a bad pronator I am and how I needed the "right" shoes for that, and orthotics.   You have nothing to lose by trying - but if you do, you have to do it completely, not just once or twice a week and then in your other shoes the rest of the time.  Perhaps something for after Berlin?  Or of you don't do Berlin you could completely adapt prior to Paris.

Back to running - sorry TD.

Had 2 quick runs Thursday and Friday post-ITLR that felt good. I'm going to struggle fitting one in today with work - I really will need to start KOC'ing runs or GNR/Berlin will be the usual lumber and bad time...

Good luck all those with various niggles. Maybe barefoot is the way to go (for us all)...

    yer majyer maj ✭✭✭

I'm certainly nowhere near a forefoot strike yet...and probably not as close to a midfoot as I would like to have myself believe....but even the change to making sure my foot lands below my knee has made a big difference.  I made a really conscious effort to concentrate on form during my LT pace this morning and it felt easier as a result - I was aware that I was lifting my feet more too.

  • Options
    OrbuttOrbutt ✭✭✭

Dannir - when I first started running I was told that, due to flat feet, I needed support shoes. Any idea if the zero drop shoes might cause problems?

Don't fancy vibrams (it's the toe thing) but what other shoes would you recommend?

  • Options
    Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Orbutt - From what I can tell from the various reports and arguments I've seen about the minimalist vs cushioned/support shoe is the minimalist stance is that any cushioning/support does nothing to correct possible injury issues and if anything possibly causes them.

I do know Vilbrams are at the extreme end of minimalist shoes. I think all the major shoe brands all do shoes with 0mm heel drops these days. Do you know what the heel drop on yours is currently?

I'm actually thinking of going the other way. My groin injury happened and has persisted using shoes with an 8mm heel drop. I'm thinking of going back up to 12mm to see if that helps as that was what all my old shoes were and I never had a problem.

Yer maj - chi running - arms should drive back and slightly down rather than forward and definitely not across the body. The chi running guy I saw that worked wonders for me runs general day courses in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the North East - he lives in Sunderland I think.

Weedy, you may as well stick me down for the Glasgow Half in October too, I don't have any good enough excuses to get out of it!

New route this year by all accounts, or at the least the second half of the route is different.
