Spontaneous Osteonecrosis of the knee - anyone else had it???

I ran this year's Paris Marathon and about 2 weeks later started getting pain in my knee which stopped me running but also caused me to limp even when walking. After various visits to the Doc eventually I got an MRI scan in June where they aid I had "an oedoema inside the knee which appears to be an entity described as an spontaneous osteonecrosis" i.e. some dead bone caused by interruption of blood supply. Specialist didn't seem to worried (said the good news was the knee joint itself looked OK with no signs of wear and tear) and advised rest and avoiding running for 3 months. That takes me to end Sept but I can still feel sensitivity (not pain) in the same area of the knee.

Has anyone else had this and if so how long did recovery take?

Also any advice welcomed particulalrly on how to restart training and avoid further damage to the knee.

  • Hi there, I have just been diagnosed with Sonk after an Mri scan. Sorry I dont have much useful experience to share other than my experience in build up. It happened a few weeks after I took up running to get fitter for mountainbiking. Im 46 not overweight, but not used to regular exercise. My Orthopaedic Surgeon says its not related to any injury or sport. Can I ask how is it after 4 mths and any advice? Best regards, Nick
  • Just wondered how you two were doing, I have been diagnosed with sonk, have been running for 8 years injury free, however I ran a marathon last year and suffered knee pain, following Mri scan diagnosed with sonk which appears to be recovering, this is some 4 months ago, fed up and have only just started to run again, only managing 3 miles at minute and would love to up mileage after being used to running 4 or 5 times a week and for decent amount of mileage. Any advice welcome
