Long stride length or short?

Shorter stride / faster cadence is generally reckoned to reduce the shock loading experienced when running - think of it like this - imagine a 50p piece rotating alongside something that has much more sides but each one is shorter (so almost round). The 50p will travel further between corners but each rotation will be clunkier and jerkier. The one with more sides will "hit" the surface more often but with less impact each time. Not the best analogy but the closer you can get to "round" the better. This also has the benefit of encouraging less vertical movement (which is wasted motion).
  • You can definitely go too long on your strides and then you'll effectively be braking with each step.
