  • Thanks for that Seren and FF.  Have spent the weekend re-doing my schedule a bit to do the full swim and bike that weekend.  Nothing quite as satisfying as fiddling with spreadsheets image

  • right..........been looking for a half between outlaw and wales and the only suitable date is the cotswolds one which is flat.............so I'm looking to try and visit tenby around the 2nd weekend in august for some bike practice............

  • I have literally just come in from driving the cycle route main loop. I'm glad I have already paid as I can't back out now... Terrified doesn't cover it!!!
  • its very scenic but it definitely a tough one.............9 months to train.........if a body can turn a single cell into a fully functioning baby in 9 months..then we can all train our bodies to handle those hillsimage

  • Ha ha, that's true!

On the other hand, at the rate it's going here at the moment, the cycle route will be in the sea and we'll be swimming the 112 miles as well! It's very sodden with lots of closed roads. Kiln Park is a lake... Probably reminds you of 2011 image
  • Anyone have any idea if/when this sold out last year?

Want to enter but haven't got the spare cash yet
  • I don't think it sold out last year - but neither did IM UK and that has already sold out for 2013, so a bit hard to predict...
  • Happily recommend Bluestone Holiday Park as accomodation, especially if anybody's taking family or friends along. A real quality location. Not cheap, but nice.

LCW last year was excellent preparation and really well organised. The LCW swim actually felt like a bigger event than the IMW swim did! And if you don't fancy the full distance ride at that point in your programme, you can always just do the first lap (circa 72 miles I think) and then bimble off to do a bit more of the "interesting" stuff around Saundersfoot and Wiseman's Bridge.

The IMW run was horrible. Good idea to do plenty of hill work, because there are no flat, straight bits image. At all image.

  • Really hoping to get down for the IM Wales weekend, just to cheer you lot on.

  • Like SA im hoping to be around that weekend but Im not taking part again this year
  • Seren - Good on you for the turbo.  Time to kill the dragon image  I'll be right there with you (only probably further back!)

Anyone have any suggestions for a decent wheelset for the course - had mavic ksyrium elites last time and was wondering what if anything to upgrade them to?

  • I have no idea on bikes.i can tell you the colour thoughimage

  • Good question sonof.., I'm looking to move from road bike to TT this year, and the wheels I get will need to be suitable, looking at carbon/allow wheels, deeper rear than front

  • What did you use last time M..Tri?

I'm after something that has an non-carbon braking surface.... I'm thinking about it now, cos I know I'll have to save up!

  • Standard allow road wheels that came with the bike.  I;ve tried all carbon tubular wheels, and OK with swisstop pads, but prefer the allow braking surface, and whatever wheels I get will need to be training and racing wheels, can't afford to have both.

Yup - same for me.  And would prefer clinchers, as I already have 60 quids worth of race tyres sat waiting!

  • I ran 60mm clinchers for the race last year (and Long Course Weekend); the dirt-cheap Chinese ones via ebay. I had no problems with them. Only place I got bothered by crosswinds on either ride was the 500 metres along the beach at Angle on LCW when it was Force 5. Take your point about the braking performance, M..Tri.... lots of hard braking required on wet lanes and slippery leaves... but it was all fine. In summary - no need to sweat too much over your wheel choice image.

  • cant stop andy (SoS) from buying things can we??

its gonna be ace this year mate.

i dont think you need new wheels...the ones you've got are great (similar to RS80s i run) and to make a big gain you'll have to spend about a grand....may as well pay Jase to coach you for half that!!!

You'll be reet without new wheels this year...i just KNOW it!!!

Hey!  I haven't bought anything for the bike for ages and ages!

Provided Beatrice stays well this year, that Dragon's going DOWN!

  • Is there any way of finding out how many have entered, I fancy this after spectating last year but haven't got the cash yet. Don't want to miss out
  • Jedwards, I had an email from the Ironmen people today saying UK 70.3 nearly full, so I guess (but don't know) they will do this for Wales too and give a bit of prior warning. If I hear anything I will post it here (as I'm sure others would too). Hope you don't miss out.
  • Thank you Leah
  • The deed is done, the entry confirmed, and accommodation booked.  Long Course full distance swim and bike also entered, together with Wimbleball as a nice warm-up.

Off now to lie down in a dark room, and think about what I've done.

  • Oh yeay, bike fit Saturday for a nice shiny TT.

And next week sorting out travel and accommodation for Challenge Vitoria in July.

2013 is the year I break myself, financially, physically and mentally

  • If the course has the amount of climbing people keep mentioning, would a road bike be a better choice then a TT bike for this?

  • glad to have you on board M.tri...........will you be taff swimming this summer image

  • A TT bike wouldn't be an issue, FF.

  • Seren, yep, I'll be up for some swims in the Taff, but not quite yet
  • FF, I don't have a TT bike, but a road bike has been fine for me at both IMWs so far - and although it wasn't too windy last year, in 2011 quite a few people were struggling with their TT bikes (I know because I passed plenty image!)
