Jj - I know the first bits, the main probem to be overcome and a few other bits ... the more i ponder it the more it seems to be coming together - it's just hard putting vishin into words that make sense
If you have a good reference library near you it won't cost you a penny (unless you're like me and always forget to take them back for months and the fines are so high you might as well have bought the book in the first place!)
I've got some Viking books somewhere - but had to clear out about 500 books when we moved to this little house...
You aware that there has been research into what makes a good/popular book?
Not sure I remember it or where to find this research. Found out about it on one of the personal development courses I have done. Didn't write it down as I wasn't interested in writing a book.
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings follow the model fairly closely.
Maybe somebody else here knows what I am on about?
Hi Sam - yes I've read the research - it goes along the line that the story should comprise of a single seaminly imposable problem to be solved by main char(s) and the journy should be made up of lots of sub problems that build to the solving of the main problem

Just keep pondering and keep writing.
Don't worry if the story starts to take its own shape - it may well change as you add flesh to the bones.
as opposed to pagans?
cool.
all these sort of books boil down to a basic good verses evil sort of thing
You might have found a wonderful niche - and yes, if you have a good strong hero and a sexily evil villain you could hit paydirt.
(LittleWill has a lovely Horrible Histories book about the Vikings - have you seen it?)
