Jon - that was 10 minutes 1 second I added actually :-) Maybe you should put down my lack of counting abilities to the sugar high caused by eating too many Mars bars far too quickly at the finish line...
How many people found they started either too far forward or backwards of the start line? Mine looks about right, anyone changing their position for the next mass participation event?
Nattynoodle, I used a bum belt and a (bike) water bottle on Sunday. I'm not sure about the bum belts yet - I got rubbed quite a lot by it, and I find getting the bottle back in difficult. Also I don't like the sloshing/up and down movement that you get. It IS good for carrying a few extras though, like car keys, and food. I carried an energy gel, a powerbar and dextrose tablets on Sunday. I didn't use them, but just knowing I had them helped.
I choked on the cups (lesson learnt!) but I find bike bottles easy to drink from on the run - just stick the end in your mouth and squeeze. Alternatively, Camelbaks are good, especially on long unsupported runs.
On shorter runs, I just carry a bike bottle in my hand.
Water bottles. I always make sure I have one for anything longer than ~10 miles since I can't drink from the cups either. As well as this I normally find that I want a sip at times other than the drink stations and in addition you can just squirt a little in to your mouth when required, no waste and no coughing. Providing you do the bottle belt up tight I don't really notice it all.
At water stations I think plastic (or paper) cups are the only safe way to do it. At the Richmond park 10k the week before they were handing out bottles, which are fine to drink from on the run, but too many people dropped them on the course, creating a serious hazard for everyone.
NN I suppose it should be possible to calculate everyones start position by subtracting chip from gun times & then compare start & finish positions - would that work?? I'm not exactly busy at the mo - I'll try it - I've already downloaded the spreadsheet version of the results
What comes next - being fourthed or quartered - not sure I like the sound of either. I'd agree about the use of bottles - but for the fact it was the runners who dropped the bottles & they couldn't really be cleaned until the course was empty again. Personally I lobbed my empty 6 or 10 ft off to one side of the track, and so did thousands of other people, but there were enough bottles on the course to be a risk. Plus I suppose it requires a major sponsor to supply bottles water and cups are cheap - -quite an issue at smaller events
If I run the Felixstowe Half this weekend I am going to try using one of those little runaid bottles and see how that goes, it has to be better than not being able to have any liquid at all again!
I reckon pint glasses are the way forward anyway. I am used to gripping the size of the shaft (no smutty replies, please), they are sturdier than plastic and the liquid in them is much better than water. I reckon all races should have an en-route lager option. Is that a decent suggestion?
Nattynoodle - applying some dubious logic to the Excel results I have conclusively proved that I was the 2648th runner to cross the start line. I crossed the Finish line in 1152nd place, so I overtook 1496 people. I suppose that means I could have started nearer the front. Perhaps I should have arrived on time & given myself the choice.
Yes it certainly would have been better for you if you had arrived on time, we got there for just before 10am, and there was at least one forumite that was already there before us. It was surprising how quickly the 3 hours went!
You are right of course, you should have been way way further up nearer to the start line!
Sorry i have had a busy week - seems lots of my clients wanted to see the hills I was talking about so have done lots of training runs to the park from our club in Ascot. My chip position was 2258 ?? is that good??? Did anyone elses create a nice hole just above the ankle!!

(mines still in my bag if you want a slightly melted one....)

gun time: 1:43:30
chip time: 1:41:34
And just in case anyone gets the wrong idea about my chocolate guzzling habits, I don't think 2 Mars bars after running 13 miles is _too_ excessive...

I did a run last year with polystyrene cups. Thats a definate no no as you grab the cup it falls apart.

Chip Time : 2.04:45
Very pleased, first half and a nice incentive to beat 2 hours at Salisbury !
Well done everyone !
When's Salisbury? Would be interested in running that one with other forumites if the date is right.....
Finish Chip Time 1.58.41 PB hoorah!!!
If you go to "A race for allof uspart two" on the URWFRC forum you'll find out about it and see who's thinking of running it.
It's on 2.3.03. I've emailed the Warminster running club to find out more about it.
Hope to see you there
