Forum spam update

Hi all,

First things first – hello! It’s my second week as Web Editor here so I thought I’d introduce myself here on the forum. I know some of you have been wondering what’s been going on behind the scenes on the site as we've had a few team changes over the summer months.

In other news, a third-party anti-spam service has just been implemented which should reduce the number of spam posts that you see on the website. This went live yesterday - 2 October - which means you should see far less spam on the forum.

Thank you VERY much for your patience on this matter – we know it’s been a frustrating few months. The new service should resolve the vast majority of the problems and our developers are continuing to monitor the spam levels. As ever, keep your forum alerts coming in if you do spot any spam and we’ll do our best to delete it and block the offending member as quickly as possible.

Many thanks,

Katie - RW

  • You're welcome image

  • It doesn't work.

  • Sure doesn't ....

  • Thank you
  • Hello Katie! I hope you're better than your predecessors. We're all still waiting for a response to mails we've sent to RW towers. We'll not hold our breath.
  • Hi Katie image Good luck with your start and if I can offer a suggestion to RW towers - perhaps a nice "thank you" gift/gesture to the Spam Wombles who have given up a lot of their free time to keep this forum spam free.

  • Morning,

Emmy_H, yes of course, that was the plan. I'll email all the mods separately.

Liverbird - which email account did you send your emails to? Might be easier to resend as we've had team changes over the past few months. Send to editor@runnersworld.co.uk and put FAO Katie so I know it's to do with this thread.

I'll keep you updated on the spam filter changes. I know not all are being caught, but it should catch the vast majority.

    Thanks

    Katie RW

  • Thanks Katie.

It's old news now so it doesn't matter much. I will address any future mails to you!
  • could someone at RW Towers please kill the spammer that's appeared in Gear promoting running buggies - he's like a rash at the mo on there and a few other sections

  • @fat buddha - done.  It helps if you name the spammer, by the way.

  • cheers IM

    name and shame next time

  • An outbreak has just hit General!

  • It's spreading to other parts of the forum as well.

    Highly contagious I'd say.

  • Intermanaut - try Nigel-1958

seems a bit old to be wanting a baby jogger but hey who am I to judge.

  • Incresed stammin for next weekend ..Ready for the kill.....

  • Hello,

Was there a lot of spam over the weekend? I only had the one notification this morning. If you do spot spam, please report it as we're keeping a close eye on it.

The new spam software has caught a lot, but there will be some which slips through the net unfortunately. Hopefully these will become few and far between.

    Many thanks,

    Katie

  • Katie .. we were overrun with it

It appears that you were not informed that 4 or 5 of 'us' have the ability to get rid of the spam and this is what we have been doing all weekend hence why only a few have been reported to you, if you can check all the bozoed posts then you may see the extent of the problem !

  • Oh dear.

Could you hit the 'report to moderator' link before you bozo as we're taking down the forum ID posts? This means we get an email with the link ID of the spam for our developers to look at. It's fine to bozo after this.

I'll get our development team to look at the bozo-ed posts.

We really appreciate your work. I know it's frustrating!

    Katie

  • We do monitor it as best we can but the 'spam wombles' are a huge help to stop it in its tracks as soon as possible. We are continuing to look into the best ways to reduce it.

I shall certainly try and remember although that is a tad labour intensive, I presume you dont have that kind of history in the system?

  • by reporting it......... would it mean that the RW team will have 100s of reported threads that they will have to look at just to find that they have been removed already.................and so risk missing the threads that have been reported for other reasons apart from the obvious spam.....

unless  it is all dobne differently

  • It's getting to the point where I won't even log on at the weekend. And that's no disrespect to those attempting to clean up. But they can't be expected to sit there all day waiting for the assault to begin....

Agreed. Katie - I know you guys are trying, but what it's like the spam wombles are buggered if they do, buggered if they dont.
