I'm surprised, nay shocked, that nobody has mentioned boy/girl band shite like the dross that Louis Walsh made famous. People finishing 3rd on X factor or whatever have made lots of money for singing cover versions badly. If you can't write your own music and play an instrument you should not be allowed to subject my ears to such shite.
That's because most of the regular posters on RW are middle aged, and middle classed, and wouldn't be able to name any xfactor bands let alone know their music, just take a look back through the thread to see who they've selected as not liking.
Mark Bolan/T Rex. Michael Jackson. Black Eyed Peas. AC/DC. Neil Diamond. Billy Joel. Genesis. Fleetwood Mac. Bryan Adams. Don McLean. Cher. Meat Loaf. Pearl Jam. Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel. Gerry Rafferty. Micheal Bolton. Cyndy Lauper. Roy Orbison.
Agree with what was said about Adele, decent singer but now boring, her own songs can be very dull.
Pet Shop Boys and Elton John - complete mystery to me, to quote a famous football manager if they were playing in my garden I'd close the curtains.
Morrisey very good music, and good character, love David Bowie music and even though she's a sandwich short of a picnic, Paloma Faith is currently the pick of the British crop, she writes amazing music
Bowie is one of the best imo. Black eyed peas definitely one of the worst.
Loads of music, though, that I can see the appeal to kids, but I'm completely baffled how adults can get excited about it. Same goes for a lot of books, films and tv though.

Wot?!
The question of this thread was who you can't understand why they are so popular?
You can't understand why crappy boy/girl bands are popular?
clue (1) Their popularity has little or nothing to do with the music
clue (2) They're popular with a mainly prepubescent/teenage girls
If the people who bought their albums and went to their gigs were middle age and geriatric men then that would be a mystery. As it is hormones and misplaced role-models is a good enough explanation.
I must admit I love The Smiths depsite thinking Morrisey is a fud. Then again I loved a lot of the old goth music growing up like The Mission, The Cult, Sisters of Mercy etc so maybe I enjoy some music to hang myself too.
Yep me too, more morose the better. I always loved the line in a nirvana song "I miss the comfort in beeing sad", sums it all up, but then life is, completely pointless
Can't beat a bit of Creedence. I'm listening to Graham Central Station at the moment, Larry Graham just gets that funk on, you can't help but jump around the room.
George Michael - he really is a weak singer - likewise Chris Martin although I don't mind some of the early Coldplay numbers. Both seem very popular though so what do I know?
Hendrix is a legend to me and was a huge inspiration when I was playing in bands when younger, particularly his blues work.
Lots of people have said this to me... I've tried to listen to him but I just don't hear it... by contrast, I can listen to Eric Clapton and immediately understand why people rave about him... I'm not a Clapton fan, but I can understand why others might be... but Hendrix... nope.. I just don't get it..

I think we're just taking boy/girl bands as a given wasteland of talentless trash.

Michael Jackson.
Black Eyed Peas.
AC/DC.
Neil Diamond.
Billy Joel.
Genesis.
Fleetwood Mac.
Bryan Adams.
Don McLean.
Cher.
Meat Loaf.
Pearl Jam.
Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel.
Gerry Rafferty.

Coldplay and Oasis had the occasional nice ditty in their early stuff but I don't think they were worth all the fuss made over them. Fuss puts me off.
Hereos is a great song... but apart from that his music just doesn't appeal to me...

Particularly Take That.
The Smiths.
Music to hang yourself to.
Is this right thread to say that I think Schoenberg's music is crap too?

edit: words were wrong.
Kings of leon.
The Killers
Razorlight
Coldplay make me nod off.
Can't beat a bit of Creedence. I'm listening to Graham Central Station at the moment, Larry Graham just gets that funk on, you can't help but jump around the room.
One band that seems to have a large followng is The Happy Mondays for some reason don't get them at all..............
George Michael - he really is a weak singer - likewise Chris Martin although I don't mind some of the early Coldplay numbers. Both seem very popular though so what do I know?
I just thought of another one.. Jimi Hendrix. He is iconic, but I just don't hear it...
