  • Oh, I did Honiton Hippo in it's first year. If it's still the same race then don't expect it to be like anything you'd expect to run. I'm sure it's changed a bit but I hope they still have the river crossings, the silly steep hills and the mud.

    Right, I'm going to start training for this marathon, I fear I may have already left it too late.

  • Mouse - apart from two halfs and a ten mile race this year I don't think I've run in double figures since last year's Marlow Half. I was going to do 15 today but I, er, ran out of time and only did 6.

  • I've been in bed for the best part of last week with a cold, well a chesty cough. I still have it a bit but I have no motivation. I was going to go for an easy run at first light this morn but I snuggled back down unde the covers. I tried to do some exercise this morn but didn't have the energy. i ache like I ran 20 miles last night. image

  • mrs hog .... I did my first 18 miler for a few months yesterday ... trust me you took the right option with the duvet snuggling !!

     

  • Never been over 13 before, so there's got to be a first for everything. Scary prospect for me
  • Steve, don't worry about the mileage, its the hills that you wanna be scared of imageimage (says the biggest hill wimp in the world ... I even classify the curbs round our way by their steepness!)

     

     

     

  • My plan is to walk up and run down and the flat bits, even though there doesn't seem to be any blooming flat bits. The plan may not last, as I'll want to run up out of stubbornness lol

  • Hi all. Just wondered if anyone know how this race compares to the Beachy Head Marathon hill wise?

  • Well I havent done Beachy. My mate has run all of this one and Purbeck and said Giants Head is harder

  • just looked up Beachy Head they say they had 880 metres of ascent which equals 2887 feet of climb

    My Garmin had more than that in the first 13 miles image  .....you know just saying

  • This marathon has more ascent than Beachy. It does not have the steps or the 7 sisters though. I've maps of the 2 and side by side there isn't much between them. I'll try and load images of the hill profiles if you like.

  • I can't uplaod the GH profile atm due to a technical error at RW towers. Using the same software I make GH 3938ft ascent.

  • How does that compare to South Downs Marathon? I think the organisers reckoned on about 5300ft ascent there. As that is the only hilly marathon I've run I don't know what to compare it to.

  • Both Beacy and GH are hillier than South Downs - using same software I make SouthDowns about 3,700 ft ascent. Having run the South Downs way I think it is the less tough of all the courses.

  • I ran southdowns mara in2008 I think or 2007 anyway this is toug...er nicer

  • As resident dietitian for the Giants Head marathon (ahemimage ) I would like to plug my blog should anyone want some sports nutrition hints and tips. 

    I'll be adding to it regularly, so if there's a specific topic you'd like covered let me know and I'll do my best image

  • Post race refuelling will be of course Hog Roast, cake and beer. As recommended by our dietician.....Protein, carbs,hops and barley

  • Thank you for all your responses, I am already signed up for this and am really looking forward to the challenge (and the hog roast after)! Though I think this might be enough hills for one year and I may leave Beachy Head until next year.

  • Just wondered if a hog roast would be like eating members of the family? (it's only the inlaws though).

  • Bookie - my pre-race breakfast is a Clif bar and a Nature Valley granola. And two cups of coffee. For a marathon I add another Clif bar. I drive Mrs C to distraction with this regimen. If I were to show here your work I would never hear the last of it!
